Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

A retail home decor client is using it as her Ecommerce website. We transferred from a custom built site using OpenCart to a BigCommerce ecommerce template that I customized to match old branding.
  • Large selection of attractive/modern responsive templates that are very easy to customize to your brand.
  • Very easy to update site software with latest version without affecting existing look & feel.
  • Very responsive template designers. Company that created template I customized answered design queries and offered tech assistance all within 24 hours.
  • Customer support at BigCommerce is terrific. Never had a bad experience.
  • Large knowledge base of support documents and online community. Rarely did not find answer I needed in documentation.
  • Blog needs major upgrade. Customization is limited. Would also be good to have plugins to expand functionality. Blog used to be a big feature on old site but not on BC.
  • Add ability to offer product without any price on retail site. Right now have to finagle then it shows up as zero - need to just turn off price for some products. Ex product sample "call to inquire"
  • Better more expansive email support. They have great sync with MailChimp & coupon sites. Would be better if they offered some auto sync functionality with Google Mail or Microsoft. Right now we contracted mail separate then linked and manage off BC. Not great.
  • Online Store
  • Brick & Mortar Store
  • Online Marketplaces (e.g. Amazon, eBay)
  • Social Media (e.g. Facebook, Pinterest)
JustUno, MailChimp, Google shop, Google Analytics, Facebook, Pinterest
  • Reduced time in adding new product.
  • Reduced time in changing product pricing and/or options.
  • Made it easier to create time sensitive product placement with auto functions.
  • Increased customer response with auto cart reminders.
BigCommerce beat them out in price plans, percent of cut into retail sales, ease of use in setting up site, ease of HTML customization, flexibility of HTML customization, average rate of downtime, ease of upgrades.
Any retail company from tiny to large would find what they need with BigCommerce. Not so much non-retail graphic portfolio type sites.

Evaluating BigCommerce and Competitors

Yes - We replaced custom built OpenCart website hosted by InMotion Hosting. Though I loved a lot of OpenCart's functionality, it was difficult for other non-computer literate users to interact with the system. BigCommerce made it much easier for anyone in the organization to add/delete/edit a product on the fly.
  • Price
  • Product Features
  • Product Usability
  • Positive Sales Experience with the Vendor
  • Third-party Reviews
Researched the pros and cons in multiple reviews. Explored free sign ups in alternate companies like Shopify and Amazon to test user experience and functionality. Overall ease of use, price plans, customer sales and tech support experience sold me on BigCommerce.
Wouldn't change a thing. Very happy with decision and all reasons I chose BigCommerce were verified by lived experience.

No - We paid for premium support the first year while setting up and learning the system. It was well worth the extra money. Now we know system very well so do not need the extra support. Our processes are relatively stable so not a lot of new learning required. Knowledge base of support documents and community are also great.
Yes - Contacted template design company and they replied immediately. Bug was fixed overnight by their support team on first attempt.
While customizing the template I wanted to do a few things outside the normal parameters. I emailed our support contact asking if she could direct me to where I would find documentation of any kind to help me. Instead she called me and walked me through the HTML documents and then thru some coding that gave me exactly the effect I wanted. Saved me a ton of time and was above and beyond her responsibility.

Using BigCommerce

I have experienced no difficulty or problem with the interface that were not easily resolved by the support documentation, BigCommerce tech support or third part design template support. Daily usage for basic tasks are no brained. Explaining usage to non-computer literate users in organization is also easy.

  • Adding product is a breeze including uploading images
  • Setting up the initial site using a template is crazy easy
  • Importing product and images from another site was much easier than expected and incredibly accurate
  • Options are not difficult/cumbersome so much as confusing. The option master vs option specific details could be more like OpenCart.
  • Would be great to have time expiration date on individual product and options.
  • Customizing location of social media could be easier
Yes - If by mobile interface you mean a responsive design. Our site translates perfectly on smart phone and iPads with just a slight tweak to our HTML to compensate for some customization I made that shifted the appearance.
