Overall Satisfaction with Splashtop Enterprise
I selected Splashtop Enterprise to provide remote IT administrative support to my wife's business, a small mental health practice. I had previously used a Splashtop product for personal use and liked the simplicity and reliability of the product, so when I was evaluating remote connection options I decided to look at Splashtop Enterprise, TeamViewer, VNC, and several other products. I appreciated the ease of setting up the agent on employee workstations and was able to deploy a package through Microsoft Intune. The settings allowed me to lock down the agent as I desired, and I appreciated the use of 2FA, TLS/AES encryption, and the logging features of the web interface. Clients can be managed and accessed through a web interface or a software install, including remote patches, which are provided frequently. There are additional features that I have opted not to pay for, such as endpoint security, remote log viewing, etc. Connecting to clients has been rock solid and almost as if I was sitting in front of the remote computer. Having previous experience with TeamViewer, I did not feel that I was missing anything essential, and I feel that the licensing costs are very competitive.
- Intuitive to use.
- Easy to deploy.
- Straightforward interface.
- Security features (2FA, Logging).
- Could use more granularity in settings, specifically security.
- Able to support employees remotely, no need to drive to office.
- No need to hire onsite IT support staff.
Splashtop Enterprise states that the stream/keystrokes of the remote system are secured via TLS and AES 256-bit encryption. The product provides the ability to set up 2FA and other security features. I appreciate that they provide documentation via the FAQ for transparency. For example, see link to the HIPAA Compliance memo outlining the protections offered. Using the Splashtop agent, I did not have to customize my Firewall or IDS/IPS policy to allow connections to remote workstations. While any remote access solution is inherently less secure than physical access, I feel that the Splashtop product is a good compromise between security and convenience.
It only took me a couple of hours to set up and deploy the Splashtop Enterprise solution. Most of this time was evaluating what configuration settings I wanted to use on the endpoints. Once I had determined what settings to use, I was able to create a custom MSI through the web interface and deploy this through Microsoft Intune. Splashtop has provided a Knowledge base article on how to do this. The deployment took under an hour and I was able to connect in without physically touching the workstations.
