Be sure to ask about pricing. If I remember correctly the pricing is by processor core, which can get VERY expensive in a large organization with multiple locations. I would say Actuate would be best suited for a medium/large sized organization with 1000-2500 employees with a dedicated team of software developers. If the organization needs someone who can get up and running quickly developing reports and where it is not the primary responsibility then I would recommend an alternative product like Crystal Reports.

Dayforce appears to be a product that was designed for retail, however, we have made it work for our environment in a law firm setting. It works well for time management to my knowledge, but our recruiting, performance management, and billing through accounting is still outside of Dayforce in other systems.

Pros

  • The performance of Actuate IServer is tremendous. It can handle a large volume of reports with many concurrent users.
  • We can do anything in Actuate. We can write our own function, procedures, methods in Actuate. Basically we can create our own framework in Actuate. No other reporting tool is proving this functionality.
  • It supports the OLTP system very well. The data can be flowed easily from one report to another report, by using array.
  • Control level formatting is available.

  • One single platform was a game changer for us. The continuous calculation of pay changed the way our payroll and benefits office does business. The time it has saved in calculating and auditing changes is great.
  • Dayforce looks at the entire employee experience from both an employee and employer's perspective and meets both expectations. Employees are getting what they need and stayed engaged through Dayforce. Managers, administrators, and executives can get the level of detail they want/need to help them make informed decisions
  • Scalability. As our organization has grown from 800 employees when we first implemented Dayforce to over 1350 employees now, Dayforce has grown with us. And not only in the number of employees, but growth of our organizational structure. We've added locations, cost centers, and processes. Dayforce has kept up and allowed to to make these changes with relative ease.

  • Support for more databases, such as other BI tools.
  • There can be more graph types.

  • I think the scheduling component could use some work. Currently if someone has a different type of availability for work, you cannot simply look at the days they are available and visually see what they can work. You have to hover over the box to see what they can work. It would be benificial if there was a way for their availability to be visible A for AM, P for PM or O for open in each day.
  • Some of the upload functions could use some additional functions. We are currently trying to figure out how to upload our J1 visa employees, but have their social security tax blocked so we don't have to manually for all of their work assignments. It's very time consuming.

Pricing for BIRT onDemand is going up 10x and sales can't negotiate. They are not supporting this platform. For us, a smaller company using iHub is going to be too expensive. We can't continue to use this solution.

We have never experienced a total/unplanned outages that effected our ability to process payroll. However, there are times when the application's speed is significantly effected - and processing a payroll may take up to twice as long as normal.

Have a strong internal team. Communicate with your implementation team - they are there to make it work for you. Take the time to really think about how you want the system to work for you - in some cases, you may need to rethink your own business practices to see if you are working harder when the system could do it for you

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used extensively as a developemnt tool and by 10s of thousands of end users. Virtually every line of business in our large financial institution uses Actuate - many who are unaware because the components are built into our home grown applications.

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has a HUGE number of features that can tie nicely into almost any ERP but it takes some time to learn and the development community was relatively small compared to the Crystal Reports alternative. Crystal was far easier to learn and had a massive support base. Probably because it is now owned by SAP.

Having everything all in one and a timekeeping system that is based off of the schedule already input into Dayforce is a huge plus. It helps us forecast labor budgets and ensure employees are only working when they are supposed to be working. The fact that there is an easy to use app that employees can use to ensure they are up to date and know where they stand weekly is also amazing.

LDAP and Active Directory can be integrated. Access control can be extended with web services but it can be complicated. Different types of users can have different permissions and reports can be hidden from some users. Reports can be exported in a lot of formats including microsoft formats, and pdf. Interactive viewer is very powerful.

This was a feature of Actuate I almost forgot. You could connect to number of different data sources across the organization from Oracle to MySQL and just about everything in between. Also if you have multiple environments of the same system (DEV,QA,PROD) you can change the connection string each time you compile the same report to promote changes. This was easier then changing the connections in alternative software like Crystal Reports

Overall, we are extremely happy with the Dayforce WFM module. Our biggest pain point is concerning the twice annual software upgrades - which is the only reason I haven't rated them as a '10'. Because every customer is configured differently, the upgrades can sometimes have adverse effects on our current configured policies/rules. And although they roll-out the upgraded version in a test environment several weeks before go-live, not all testing is accurate in that environment. Some issues do not present themselves until you are working with live punches.

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.

  • We eliminated nine systems and 22 interfaces.
  • Risk of error has been reduced by the elimination of duplicate data entry.
  • Eventually, we expect to move to a paperless HR environment enabled by the Dayforce document management functionality.
