QuickBooks Enterprise

QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions would be great for a company that is buying products and just reselling them as-is. It is great at keeping track of quantities remaining from previous purchases and time periods, adding new inventory purchased, and subtracting inventory sold. It would also work well for a company that purchased materials to manufacture items for stock, and then sold those stock items. QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions does not work very well for manufacturing of one-off or custom products as each item has to be "built", whether it is 1 item or 100 items. It also does not have an easy way to account for scrap or materials damaged in the manufacturing process.

Pros

  • Adaptive Insights has so many good resources and easy filtering capabilities with active searching. When you go to a section of Adaptive Insights, you will see filters at the top of the page. As you change them, the contents of the page change to suit what you're looking for. This makes it easy to find the resources you need!
  • As previously mentioned, the FP&A Glossary is a great feature due to its concise definition of many common terms in FP&A.
  • I have not had much experience with the eBooks section of Adaptive Insights, but there are is a wide variety of topics to explore, such as rolling forecasts, and best practices for controllers.
Samantha Monastra profile photo
  • Reports can be modified and filtered to provide specific information. They can also be exported into Excel for further formatting and filtering.
  • It is fairly user friendly, with a flowchart on the home page to show how estimates turn into orders and then invoices, among other business functions. It is quite forgiving with input errors, allowing one to access already saved data (orders, invoices, etc.) and change it without a lengthy process of backing out previous info and re-entering new info.
  • The toolbar at the top of the screen can be customized to include the functions that one uses most, avoiding the process of selecting a tab and scrolling down to the needed option. One can also personalize how the tab/enter buttons function, as well as date formatting, decimal points, and default scripts for invoices, statements, purchase orders, etc. One can also integrate their established email address to be used through QuickBooks.

Cons

  • Users need more visibility for external reporting. If this already exists, then I would suggest more training or webcasts that cover this topic.
  • On the sales side of things, I would suggest ensuring that your NEW users are aware of the amount of training involved in learning to be an ADMIN for Adaptive Insights. Users need to be able to move beyond the implementation to active use. Yes, Adaptive makes things easy, but only if you know how to write the formulas and set things up correctly to run in the background. Hands-on training is a must! Our implementation was 3 years ago, though, so maybe things have improved somewhat since then.
  • More problem/solution-specific forums for users to interact with each other and find new and better ways of handling unique issues. Since Adaptive is so flexible, it often takes bouncing ideas off others to figure out the best way to plan for certain types of revenue or expenses.
Amy Kee, CPA profile photo
  • It's not suitable for subscription management. As many business start changing it's business model to a subscription model, this may be a consideration
  • The canned reports do not contain enough information. When you began to add more fields to be displayed, Quickbooks can sometimes crash if you're trying to export the information excel.

I like the QuickBooks Enterprise edition so much I moved my company to it this year. I like the overall functionality of the program and I am very familiar with the user interface which makes my job easier. One of the things I dislike about the online version it is not modeled after the desktop edition and I have a hard time getting around in the program.

It is a very easy system to learn, so with the help it was even easier. QB is a good solid system, but it lacks some of the complexity other systems have. with QB you need to get additional modules to get the same functionality that other systems offer standard

easy to learn system, specially with some kind of support. Just like with any other system, things get lot easier if you have guidance to lead you in your search for answers. having said that, QB is very easy to use and very easy to teach. you wont spend much time memorizing where to click.

Breadth of Deployment

It is used throughout the company in different divisions and at our corporate level. When used in a division recently the personnel from different departments directly inputted data and monitored their budget against actual. It is very user friendly and flexible.

Alternatives Considered

Adaptive Suite gave us what we needed and fit our use case perfectly. We did short list Host Analytics and they were neck and neck with Adaptive and it was a win/win for us and we would have been successful with either tool. My familiarity with Adaptive, the simplicity of self implementation, the product vision, and the turn around time to get the company up and running made gave Adaptive the edge.
KaReese Watkins, CMA profile photo
QuickBooks Enterprise Solutions stacks up strongly against the competition. Beyond many of the features/advantages identified previously, the parent company of QuickBooks Enterprise (Intuit) is a very innovative company and has a very clear strategy for the future. A significant point to be considered going forward is the fact that Intuit is strongly embracing the cloud. Although Enterprise and the other "non cloud" desktop products will be around for several more years, the cloud line of products (QuickBooks Online) will be the future of the company. Currently the QuickBooks Online products are getting closer and closer to Enterprise with respect to functionality although they are not fully there yet. If one is considering Enterprise for a business that has "outgrown" the basic lower level accounting products, it is very worthwhile to compare QuickBooks Enterprise to the QuickBooks Online products (most likely QuickBooks Plus) and see where it stands. Going down the cloud path with Intuit as the company develops better and more improved cloud products could result in a better ERP medium/long term plan on a strategic level.
