Likelihood to Recommend

AirWatch

AirWatch is a great tool for large organizations that need to manage more than 100 devices. The product is capable of handling multiple platforms and is scalable to any size company.I would not recommend AirWatch to small companies, companies with minimal MDM needs or companies on a tight budget. It's the Rolls Royce of MDMs, it has all the bells and whistles and it's not inexpensive.

Okta

Okta is great for companies that are needing to get a handle on the number of apps they have, users assigned to those apps and licensing of apps. Okta is great if you have a bunch of apps that you would really like to have an easier method of users tracking their login info. Okta is great for people looking to streamline account creation. If you have limited applications and a fairly traditional user base, you may see some pushback. If you don't have complete buy-in from upper-level management, you may see some pushback.

Pros

  • Compliance policies are robust. One thing we have done is to keep our operating systems updated using the Airwatch compliance policies. We created a customized email from an Airwatch template and send notifications to users when they are not compliant.
  • Volume Purchase Program Integration allows you to purchase apps with a corporate credit card and push out licenses to authorized users.
  • Staging user allows minimal end user interaction. Only 2 inputs when we hand a corporate phone to an end user(device password & email password).
  • Secure Content Locker allows us to open and manage email attachments in a secure container.

  • My focus is on training, support, and end user experience, and this is where I feel Okta is a no-brainer. If your organization has multiple systems to access (email, productivity apps, marketing/social apps, business apps, intranet bookmarks...), then you need Okta to keep them all one click away.
  • We all have systems that we don't access on a daily basis. Expecting users to remember the passwords to these systems, or to remember that they exist at all, can be a tall order. Okta remembers those passwords for the user, so they just need to click, and then get to work.
  • Adding new staff and terminating staff can be a drag on IT and Help Desk who need to ensure that accounts are closed across multiple systems. Okta makes this easy for you. Deactivate in Okta, and the rest is done for you (or is easily shown that it needs to be done in some instances). This ensures that the wrong people don't continue to access system and resources they shouldn't.
  • They treat you like a partner. Even though you may not be a massive company (maybe you are, in which case, goof for you), but it doesn't matter. Okta will treat you like you're their most important customer. They've been excellent with support, and just being available for us in general.

Cons

  • The MDM space is moving fast and growth is challenging for growing technology companies. Airwatch is no different in some of their support challenges. However investing in a TAM has proven to be well worth the investment. Having a point person to facilitate through support has been critical to our successful implementation of Airwatch in our environment.

  • Okta works best with apps that support single-sign on. This, while is a quickly growing list, is still not the norm. Okta is taking many steps to change this, but the current reality is that many of the most popular (particularly consumer) platforms don't support this.
  • If we know all of our users are going to Okta first, I'd love to be able to communicate with them there (important announcements, upcoming maintenance, known outages, etc.). This is a feature I've been told is coming, but isn't available today.

Likelihood to Renew

We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

Reliability and Availability

AirWatch5.0

Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Performance

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

Support

They're usually very good. I've talked to any number of techs from level one to level 3. They all seem pretty knowledgeable about the product and how to support it.

Their support team has always been extremely responsive and more than willing to go above and beyond the call of duty. They've done screen shares between our help desk staff and end users to work through issues. They are quick to respond and genuinely care about getting issues resolved. Couldn't be happier.

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

I don't have much of an opinion about this as most other places I have worked at allowed me to access my email through a web client. I guess this app makes it a little more mobile friendly by putting in an app.

Okta came highly recommended and we have been pleased thus far -- it truly feels like the best solution in the market. A bit pricey -- but peace of mind often comes at a price

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • When there is an APNS issue the time to resolve has an average of 2 to 3 weeks. During this time we are dead in the water.

  • Simplified user experience - Users can use the same credentials for everything.
  • Increased security - Easily control access to applications and reduce the risk of breaches by reducing the number of credentials users have to manage.
  • Excellent administrative control over policies and security methods. For example, it's easy to set up multi-factor authentication, set password policies, and set other restrictions on access.
