What is DiscoverOrg (discontinued)?

DiscoverOrg was a sales and marketing intelligence tool used by technology vendors, staffing companies and consultants targeting IT, finance, marketing, engineering, technology and product development departments of Fortune-ranked, mid-market, and SMB companies in North America and Europe. DiscoverOrg specialized in mapping out org charts, including verified email addresses, direct-dial phone numbers, reporting structure, new projects and initiatives, and technology installed base.

ZoomInfo Technologies (formerly DiscoverOrg, which acquired and merged with ZoomInfo in 2019 and now operates under the ZoomInfo brand) has since combined all of the capabilities of the DiscoverOrg sales intelligence database into its flagship product, ZoomInfo. Readers interested in the DiscoverOrg database should investigate the ZoomInfo product instead.

DiscoverOrg has been an upper hand to spool contacts. We started it quite slowly and were able to get to the chase over a course of time. This valuable tool has been used by sales and marketing professionals who handle day to day client interactions.

With DiscoverOrg we are able to:
  • Get the right contacts
  • Locate clients easily
  • Easy report generation
  • No Technical glitches
  • Less time-consuming: Allows to easily spool contacts, get to the granular chase and target accounts that will benefit the business big time
  • Easy report generation: Allows to easily save/store contacts with flexible file formats, while this not primary, but it is an added advantage
  • User friendly: Highly intuitive UI that provides room for dynamic changes, easy to choose and get information portal
  • No room for improvement so far, yet to witness one
It is a best-fit for IT/Telecom and target businesses that predominantly prefer internet marketing over door-to-door.

DiscoverOrg is being used throughout the whole company. It solves the need to find leads for specific accounts or people with a certain title.
  • Linking each lead with their LinkedIn Profile
  • Connecting CRM with DiscoverOrg, so you can incorporate lead views via Salesforce or whichever CRM you have.
  • Ability to request more information or leads on an account.
  • Load time is very slow when putting in search terms.
  • Asthetics could be a bit improved.
  • Include pop up notifications or a chrome extension for any news happening at that current time.
I think it's a great tool for gathering any intel if you don't have many leads or are starting from the ground up with an account or company that you are targeting.

Our outbound sales staff is using DiscoverOrg to build lists to call, as well as lists for creating email campaigns to targeted companies.
  • Triggers - Allowing me to reach out to companies during events with a higher likelihood of needing our services.
  • OppAlerts - Similar to triggers, but creating even HOTTER leads to follow up on.
  • Intelligence - The amount of information you can filter by allows you to really drill down into the correct prospects, from technology used company-wise, to personal responsibilities to discover correct decision makers.
  • Interface - Sometimes the interface seems slow and clunky. Maybe some simplication and less frills to allow for faster browsing
  • Tiggers - Sometimes it seems the person associated with these triggers is not actually working on them once I reach out.
When looking to build specific, targeted lists for your outbound team, DiscoverOrg shines. There are also many opportunities to not only target the correct companies but target them at the correct time which I think is key. I recommend an open dialogue with your customer success manager to utilize the software to its fullest capability.

The entire organization I work for uses Discover.org and it is mostly used to obtain information for business development, occasionally to acquire information on possible candidates. It is available to all employees whether they are working as a recruiter, an account manager or a full desk employee. We are also utilizing it for national accounts, contract, contract-to-hire, and direct hire verticals.
  • It quickly slows you to see whether it is going to have access to what you are looking for or not, so at least a lot of time is not wasted.
  • The search feature in being able to type in a company name or individual name is nice because it might still pull someone up from a previous company and there might still be a cell number provided.
  • The sort feature with data is nice in being able to sort by name, title, etc
  • The information provided is very hit or miss and often times inaccurate.
  • Titles listed in discover.org are usually not the same as titles on individuals LinkedIn.
  • Sometimes it is so fast to pull a company up while you are searching and it is nowhere near the company you wanted.
I have tried multiple programs and Discover.org is by far my least favorite. Now, this could be the version my company has purchased, however more times than not it comes back not being able to show the information I requested or it does not have it. Discover.org is well suited to give you a great visual snapshot of a company, including revenue and employee size, org chart -- etc.

DiscoverOrg is currently being used by my organization for targeting specific audiences for our paid marketing opportunities that range from webcasts to email distributions. The sales and marketing department both use DiscoverOrg. We use the DisocoverOrg database to target those outside of our own membership database to reach a broader and more specific audience.
  • Targets specific audiences very well
  • Up to date on current market trends
  • Allows you to search both broad and specific audiences.
  • Helps to pinpoint sales and marketing opportunities within an organization
  • Speed - it can be quite slow at times.
  • Improvement on the search capabilities - since there is so much to search (which is a plus) it makes it harder to do this in a timely manner. You have to dedicate a certain amount of time to be able to pull a proper, useful and clean list.
  • Make it more user friendly - there are so many different tabs, search buttons, pull down, etc. I think it can be quite confusing to a new user.
DiscoverOrg is very well suited for the job I currently am functioning in. I pull specifically targeted lists from a form that our partners complete. These forms include specific audience metrics that I'm able to pull from DiscoverOrg. In pulling these lists, I am able to target the specific audience that my clients are trying to reach, therefore pleasing both those who receive the information (b/c they are looking for this info) and my clients who are looking to distribute their assets.

Learning how to leverage DiscoverOrg's research has allowed me to open the doors of some of the nation's largest and most difficult doors. I have personally been the decision-maker or heavy influence and heavy user of the platform since 2010, and have been behind (re)purchasing four times at three separate companies. It has been a business requirement in my last two business plans!
  • Real Time Triggers - Accurate pain points, buying cycles, and management changes.
  • Org charts - Not just 411 data, but complete insight into who reports to whom, titles, seniority, and areas of responsibility - three very different metrics in the IT world!
  • Their people - Well trained, and caring. Of all vendors that I have ever used, if I could emulate one culture - it's theirs!
  • Webinars and content - DiscoverOrg finds great partners to provide additional content of value.
  • The translation of some of the data could use some attentions. Apostrophes come through as a character and has to be corrected. There are some inconsistencies to how names are reported - mainly with respect to where and how nicknames and maiden names are reported. Not a big deal, but slows the prospecting a bit.
  • It would be nice if all exports could default to Excel and not only CSV.
  • The pick lists could be better organized/categorized. I would recommend having better category headers. Example: Take all of the more granular titles and put them under a general header that can be taken in full, not at all, or hand-selected from a drop down. Examples: Security, App-Dev, BI, etc. These are not good prospects for me, so I'd simply pass on them. IT, Contact Center, etc., would apply, so I'd either take all, or select from within. In summary, less individual selection.
  • It would be nice if pick selections and trigger criteria could be made to default to a user's preferences on every logon without having to save a search. It gets cumbersome, and the criteria in my case (and in previous roles) it fairly static from search-to-search.
  • By the way, as a long-term user I`m being rather not-picky here. none of these are need to haves or deal-breakers. They would be "nice-to-haves" though.
Any company that has a related sales focus (be it IT, telecom, marketing, finance, etc.) NEEDS to look at DiscoverOrg. This becomes especially true if you value account-based selling as a strategy, and even more so if your solutions are not commodities.
