Adobe Analytics

Adobe Analytics is well-suited for quick analysis of our website/mobile app especially at a summarized level. Where we start using other tools is when we have to get really granular, such as at a single customer level, though this is partly a product of how our pages are tagged.

Hotjar

HotJar is well suited for our UX team in trying to get as much data as possible to validate our decisions decisions. Specifically, we have a interaction component that is focused on showing and hiding metadata of a given item on the screen. We had many conflicting ideas within our team of the best way to show/hide this data. We implemented one of our ideas that we thought would be the best to test out in the wild. HotJar has provided very specific data about how our users are interacting with that interaction component, and we can now iterate on making updates that are in direct response to what we are seeing through HotJarData.

Pros

  • Next Page Flow reports provide a quick and easy way to see what path customers are taking on the website.
  • The flexibility that creating segments gives the user for analysis purposes is great. A lot of insights can be generated when different segments are compared.
  • The web interface allows for users to quickly pick up on how to use Adobe Analytics, which is a huge advantage over just pointing people to where the raw data can be found since middle management and executives shouldn't be spending time coding and trying to get the data into a visually useful format.

  • Video recording works very well. You choose which pages to record (based on many factors) and records appear very quick. This is the most useful feature for us. Of course you can't understand intent completely, but certainly there are usability things that will popup quickly.
  • Polls work well too. We have an eCommerce site so we ask different questions in many places, and it has proven to be helpful. You need a certain volume and also beware that it's annoying or confusing for some users. But considering that cost, it might be worthwhile when it's about an important page.
  • Heatmaps works well but they aren't that useful. Yes, the scroll % of people is nice but not as actionable as the other features.

Cons

  • It can take some time for someone to get comfortable with knowing what to look for when validating proper Adobe Analytics tags. I'm not sure if this is something that can be improved upon, it's just something that I have noticed can take some time when somebody is first learning how to check the tags.
  • Issues I find with implementation appear to be due to improperly inputting variables inside greater than and less than signs (<>). This may be more on the implementation side of things, but perhaps there is something that Adobe Analytics can do with alerting a developer that a variable is not receiving any values.
  • One big limitation with Adobe Analytics for me has been not being able to sort between different iPhone devices and iOS operating system versions. This is data that I always look for to see which users are accessing a site, but unfortunately Adobe Analytics doesn't appear to be able to filter this.

  • The video recording feature is very slow to use. I know there is a very powerful process going on (saving your CSS and the DOM movements you make) but anyway it's slow to use.
  • Hotjar itself is heavy and has effects on your load times. This is a very important issue and I hope they're working on that.
  • Adding more segmentation would be nice. For example, being able to connect your API or more information to show relevant polls or feedback buttons to certain users. Aggregated info is hard to process.

  • New pricing models are very expensive compared to old pricing model, even though it includes several additional tools, most of which seem to be beneficial
  • Horrible support experience despite working with escalation teams to try and resolve
  • Several bugs in recent releases which remain unresolved for many months at a time

For what it costs (at least as of now!) it's too good a bargain to pass up as long as you are dedicated to using Hotjar even infrequently for finding opportunities for improvement on your site.

Usability

Based on new user feedback, everyone has found it challenging to find what they need and customize reports to meet their desired outcomes. Different interfaces have inconsistent presentations and layouts which compound the challenge.

It has never taken me more than a few seconds to figure out how to do what I want to do. I hope the Hotjar team remains committed to keeping the software intuitive to use as they continue to add more capabilities!

Support

Adobe Analytics5.7
Based on 9 answers
I give the rating of a 4 just because it seems more like a process that is failing. Any time I have put a request in, they have taken days, sometimes weeks, to get back to me and even then, the issue may still persist. I believe this is the biggest weakness of the Adobe Analytics tool and has a lot of room for improvement.

In-Person Training

Adobe Analytics3.6
Based on 3 answers
Myself and others have found the in-person training ok, but not outstanding. Trainers are good at explaining how to use the product features, but sometimes lack "real-world" experience on how to use the product as they are people who have often not previously been web analysts. There is also a shortcoming in company-provided training on advanced uses of the product. The implementation training is very good.

The online training for Adobe SiteCatalyst consists of short product videos. These are ok, but only go so far. For a while Adobe charged a fee for this, but recently made these available for free. There are many great blog posts that help users learn how to apply the product as well.

Make sure you use a Tag Management System. Enterprise TMS solutions used to be very pricey but Adobe now offers DTM (previously Satellite) for free.

Alternatives Considered

I personally like Google Analytics better than Adobe Analytics, but it was the software that was already being used by the company. They are similar in that they both track usage, but Google Analytics is a little easier to use and hence has a better user experience. Adobe Analytics lets you make custom properties which I like

There aren't many competitors that provide this kind of accurate data. I have listed two other applications that gained my interest due to the cheap pricing point, but I'm definately glad my manager approved the purchase of Hotjar

Return on Investment

  • Adobe Analytics has given us an immense amount of custom tracking. This is invaluable.

  • We've used Hotjar to improve engagement by removing clearly confusing navigation paths or interface options.
  • We've used Hotjar to improve conversion by fixing lead form issues that weren't obvious at first.
