Hootsuite Free is a great choice for businesses that either are just getting into social media as a way of validating ROI before investing more or small businesses with limited social media needs. The free platform definitely has its limits, but for the features and post scheduling visibility, it is a really good way to get started.

Radian6 has good capabilities for social monitoring and measuring. Any Org who wants to listen the real facts stated directly out from the crowd, this is a great tool.

Pros

Hootsuite

  • Setup, including connecting your social media accounts, is easy and intuitive.
  • Scheduling posts is quick and easy once you get the hang of it.
  • I love being able to create different streams of content to monitor, this feature of the dashboard is great for keeping an eye on multiple campaigns and types of accounts at once.

  • Software is really powerful, but does require some staff members who have a passion for analytics who are able to analyze the data and figure out appropriate engagement strategies. The tool certainly supplied highly relevant data, but it requires someone with an analytics background to spend a considerable portion of their time figuring out what actions to take based on that data.
  • Product has a great UI, and is quite flexible, but it is a bit overwhelming. We have only started to scratch the surface of what the platform actually does. There is a lot of functionality that we don’t even use yet.

Cons

Hootsuite

  • They have the Hootlet owl that can be used to schedule posts on the fly for Chrome and Firefox browsers. Very helpful, I have noticed it can be quite buggy at times, so I generally don't even use install it or use it. I'd like to see it work better because a small part of posting is done on the fly. But considering it is a free resource I don't complain.
  • I'd love to see a keyword report or hashtag report which is currently not available on the free version, but considering it's free, again I wouldn't complain. When I used the free plan the main goal was to just post content and show more presence that was consistent on multiple channels.
  • When I first signed up there wasn't a lot of information in regards to how the dashboard worked and the functions of streams but I believe they have added more information, for non techy people that may seem a bit confusing at first, but they have added more information in explaining that and the publishing stream.

  • Even with the nonprofit discount, the software is still quite expensive and there are limits to the amount of data that we can pull into the system. Pricing plans have data ceilings based on the number of topic profiles and mentions we pull into the system. Exceeding those limits incurs quite a bit of extra cost. For example, we would love to monitor supporters of peer organizations, but it is too expensive for us to do that.
  • We use Small Act Thrive for scheduling (and are interested in future functionality from Thrive allowing us to cross-reference social activity with our donor file). However, it would be nice if we could do everything in a single tool. I'm not actually sure if Radian6 allows for scheduling.

It's still somewhat early on, but we've been pretty happy with Hootsuite overall. We do think there are some ways that it could be improved based on our own experience and workflows, but that may not serve the greater good for all of their users. The impact on our daily operations has been positive, which is exactly what we were looking for at the outset.

My team frequently uses this tool because it is user friendly and has very visual exports. We use some competitors, as well, but I think we will renew our subscription with Radian6.

The layout of horizontal columns for each stream or search is a very cumbersome way to display information. There isn't an easy way to sort, filter, or otherwise re-organize the streams to limit the current view to relevancy. This is one of the primary reasons why we plan to move to another platform.

Gliches have made it a bit of a bind, particularly when you just want to 'click and send' a web article after you have read it - and then you have to deal with support (a great team but not always able to solve the problems with the gliches). Gliches with it loading properly, gliches with 'double ups in FB on the posts (the personal page and the business page if both clicked will lead to 2 lots of postings to each page!)

"Help Desk", basically a collection of articles, is clearly outdated and not keeping up with its features set with inaccuracies and errors yet is still the only possible option for finding help. You get what you pay for, they say.

• We initially received dedicated online training for our team which was delivered by our account rep. This was pretty effective since it happened after our data had been loaded into the system and it had been configured for specific needs our organization. The training was perhaps a bit shallow though, as it was only an hour long. Online videos are available to be taken individually, and these have been useful.

Alternatives Considered

Hootsuite

It's not the best set of software, but it's affordable (and marketed well) for SMBs. Hootsuite Pro, along with any similar social media management tool, only becomes useful when you need to follow a publishing schedule for multiple social media channels. That said, it's pretty cheap and offers entry to a better method of management (vs. trying to do it through each platform's account individually)

Return on Investment

Hootsuite

  • Hootsuite Pro is a more efficient use of our time. As far as ROI is concerned, it has freed up our social media manager to help with more copywriting for other marketing initiatives.

  • The software does a fantastic job of letting us understand who are top social supporters are. It would be impossible to understand this without Radian6. We now know who shares our content and helps us grow virally. Knowing who these people are is crucial to the success of the organization. Our marketing team understands who among our supporters can help us grow, and which messages resonate the most.
