Learn More About Objectives and Key Results (OKR) Software
What is Objectives and Key Results (OKR) Software?
Objectives and Key Results (OKR) Software allows the user to share objectives with a team, and relate ultimate objectives to measurable progress and group or individual goals. OKR software achieves this by defining, aligning, and tracking progress towards the best possible outcomes across individuals, teams, and the broader organization. Related to project management software, OKR software keeps team members informed and aligned with leadership. OKR software presents a means of communication between leaders and role players, and creates a sense of mutual responsibility, and accountability.
OKR software is structured around clear definitions and use of objectives and key results. Objectives are high-level, and establish the direction, intent, and overarching outcomes for the time period (usually the quarter). Key results establish how success for, and progress towards, objectives are measured. Key results are usually set as the best possible results, which means they are likely not all achievable at once. However, specific execution will vary by organization and team. Executives and leaders will likely have more strategic OKRs. Their subordinates are likely to have more tactical OKRs, which then feed into and impact higher-level OKRs. This allows OKRs to more smoothly align and inform each other across the organization.
OKR software can vary dramatically in complexity and scope. Very simple OKRs can be set and tracked in Excel or Google Sheets, but this is not a robust or scalable approach. Dedicated OKR software is a much more efficient, and ultimately cost-effective, option for the vast majority of businesses.
OKR Software Comparison
When comparing OKR software, consider these factors:
Usability: How easy to use and intuitive is each product? Consider both the employee and the manager usability, as well as how smooth repeated tasks are, such as checkins, OKR closeout, and kicking off new quarters.
Point Solution or HR Suite: Is each option solely an OKR tool, or is it part of a broader performance management or HR management platform? Point solutions will likely have more best of breed functionality. Larger suites will be more scalable and integrate easier with other HR functions, such as compensation management.
Employee Engagement: Many OKR tools that offer routine check in functionality will also provide integrated employee engagement capabilities, such as employee feedback and peer-to-peer recognition. Consider whether these additional capabilities would be valuable additions to the organization’s culture.
