What is Coveo Qubit?

Coveo Qubit (acquired October 2021) uses rich visitor data to understand different user segments and serve personalized messages to audience segments using JavaScript. It is available on either a managed or self-service model.

Data is collected using Qubit’s own QProtocol data layer, or by integrating the user’s existing model via our API. Quantitative visitor behavioral data is combined with qualitative visitor feedback and ingested data from Qubit users' other systems of record enabling them to identify areas of the site and customer groups to optimize and target with personalization experiences.

Using JavaScript means that changes do not have to be hard-coded into the site, giving marketers and ecommerce teams greater power to implement changes outside of the development cycle.

Users can A/B test any changes to their site using Qubit, and the user interface lets them know what the test results are.

Qubit is a versatile software platform that is widely used by various departments within organizations to enhance their websites and optimize user experiences. One key use case of Qubit is its ability to facilitate A/B testing, allowing users to create and implement tests to drive conversion rate improvements. With Qubit, marketing teams can quickly make changes to websites without requiring CMS changes or extensive development work. This flexibility enables them to test different designs and content variations in real-time, measure the impact of these changes, and make informed decisions on website optimization.

Another important use case of Qubit is its capability to collect and analyze large quantities of data to drive personalization based on customers' previous website and transactional behavior. By leveraging this data, Qubit empowers organizations to deliver targeted experiences and offers to specific customer segments, enhancing engagement and driving conversions. This level of personalization is seen as a key advantage of Qubit over other A/B testing and personalization software available in the market.

Furthermore, Qubit's attribution tool through OpenTag plays a crucial role in understanding visitor journeys and making informed decisions on marketing spend. It provides valuable insights into how customers interact with the website, helping organizations allocate resources effectively for maximum impact. Additionally, Qubit's frequent upgrades offer new opportunities for increasing conversion rates and improving customer engagement.

Overall, users rely on Qubit for a range of use cases including A/B testing, personalization, data-driven decision making, content delivery, measuring the impact of changes, and understanding customers' preferences and behaviors. Its versatility makes it an essential tool for marketing teams, IT departments, web designers, and customer service professionals looking to optimize user journeys, test hypotheses, implement rapid changes, and ultimately improve overall conversion rates.

Versatile tool: Users have found Qubit to be a versatile tool that allows them to build literally anything, making it a valuable asset for non-technical team members. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Excellent account management and customer support: The account management and customer support provided by Qubit were highly praised by users. They mentioned that they had never experienced such good account management before and found the team's support particularly helpful in areas like data preparation for strategic review, growth hacking project management, and A/B testing. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Valuable feedback collection: Users highly appreciated the feedback box feature in Qubit as it gathers information on all parts of the business. Feedback is given to relevant departments such as merchandising and product development, leading to the introduction of new products or additional sizes based on customer feedback. Multiple reviewers mentioned this.

Difficult User Interface: Many users have found the user interface of Qubit to be difficult to navigate, making tasks feel clunky and impeding their ability to report on tests effectively.

Lack of Data Visualization Features: A number of users have expressed a desire for more robust data visualization capabilities within Qubit. They suggest that additional features or panels could greatly enhance the overall user experience by providing better insights into their data.

Compatibility Issues with Web Browsers: Some users have reported encountering bugs when using certain web browsers with Qubit. This has caused frustration as it disrupts their workflow and creates obstacles in setting up experiences within the tool.

Qubit is primarily being used by Digital Product team to facilitate A/B testing and mitigate risk when rolling out new product features and designs.
  • Qubit platform uses solid testing algorithms and delivers reliable reporting and analytics of testing campaigns. The dashboard section is easy to use and provides a good high level overview of the core campaign metric performances.
  • On-boarding and implementation of Qubit technology was painless and well handed throughout the entire process even with more complicated platforms.
  • Turn-around time for development and testing of campaigns is extremely fast. This enables the business to have a much higher throughput of tests and allows for quick validation of ideas rather than having to wait for months before a test is ready to go live on production site.
  • Self-serve tool is very basic and does not allow simple text changes or basic CSS modification of existing elements on a page. There is always a balance between reliability of code vs features of the editor, however it would be nice to have more basic editing options available in the visual campaign builder.
  • It would be nice to have more options to segment the analytics in the reporting tool. Qubit has now introduced full export of the data via their insights section via CSV which allows further analysis. Other providers offer the option to segment via technology (browser/device) or visitor attributes right within their basic reporting tool which is a nice way or drilling down large amounts of data.
Qubit platform is simple enough to understand for companies that are just starting an optimisation and personalisation programme, but powerful enough to scale and deliver lots of tests easily. Most of the 'tech' happens behind the scenes. There are other suppliers that focus more on complex statistical configuration, but we found that the way Qubit surfaces the data is reducing complexity and makes it easy to understand and helps focussing on improving customer experience.

We use Qubit at the ecommerce department for delivering new experiences to the users, going one step further through personalization and improving current user experience of the whole site - all with a powerful short time to market.
  • Segmentation
  • Personalization
  • Ideal for both advanced and non advanced users
  • Could include more programming features for advanced users
  • Could improve platform performance
  • Could have better integration with third parties
Qubit is quite powerful in terms of segmentation. The data engine behind the tool is able to gather tons of data and serve it ready for building experiences dedicated to certain users.

Used for A/B testing as we have limited development resource and lead times. It's being used by the UK eCOMMERCE department only. It addresses the need to understand how to optimise the site to improve conversion, UX and CX. It also supports us with the ability to make faster changes to the site which is one of our largest restrictions.
  • Good functionality, team of engineers and designers on board - feels like you're in expert hands.
  • Advanced functionality with endless possibilities.
  • Good account management set up means you'll always have a contact, training and ongoing support.
  • Cheaper packages or discounts on additional modules for existing and loyal users.
  • Faster speed - often we're restricted on the timelines and queues with engineers and can only run a test a time.
  • High staff turnover - not ideal for daily contacts and relationship building.
If you have an in-house UX team I would say it's less suited. If you are part of a larger scale business with more restrictions and less in-house expertise this is perfect.

Qubit is used to enhance our websites across all of the business for CeX (but not for subsidiary Designer Exchange for contractual and cost reasons). It has been deployed on websites for all 12 CeX territory websites. The use of it is driven by members of IT (including myself) and Marketing. It allows us to try new ideas quickly without interrupting internal resources, therefore can respond quicker to certain things, we can a/b test those ideas, and use the data to determine if they are of benefit or not, putting an end to many conflicting opinions because multiple ideas can be tested. We can also personalise those tests and experiences using the data we pass to Qubit, which we are not currently able to do. That all applies to the Qubit Personalisation product along with Universal Variable. However we also use product recommendations which piggybacks of the previous mentioned products to produce something we would not be able to create in house at the same speed and quality. WIth the data we send Qubit, we and they can develop many more uses which alone we would struggle to build, such as personal and targeted email marketing and many other website enhancements.
  • Market sector and industry knowledge. Using this, they have given us some excellent advice of what experiences to try, and using the data they gather from all clients are able to provide continual feedback and suggestions. This is a a credit to the staff they have exposed us to.
  • The platform performs amazingly well. We have almost zero issues or downtime in the time we have been using them.
  • Web experiences produced by Qubit always come out at a very high standard.
  • Guidance / training on how we can run our own experiences if we have the resources.
It's well suited to an ecommerce environment where goals can be measured with sales and similar measurements. Also, to really make use of the A/B testing with statistical significance, you need to have good traffic numbers.

However, while a low traffic retail site would still benefit from many of the other features of Qubit, it's less appropriate for any other type of website where the goals are harder or impossible to track.

We use Qubit within our e-commerce department, specifically across our three e-commerce sites. Qubit not only helps us to optimize from a conversion rate and revenue perspective, but it also enables us to really enhance and personalize the site experience for our different customer segments.
  • They offer a comprehensive product that utilizes cutting edge technology and allows their clients access to data and personalization capabilities that we otherwise would be lacking.
  • Their strategists are extremely knowledgable about the industry and provide great ideas and recommendations for your business.
  • They have a talented team of engineers within their professional services team that can build out experiences or perform QA if you opt to take more of a self-service approach.
  • They are juggling multiple clients, so sometimes responses are delayed or SLAs are missed.
I think companies will reap the full benefits of Qubit if they sign up for more than one of Qubit's product offering. Getting access to Experiences alone is great, but the impact is truly amplified in conjunction with Social Proof and Visitor Pulse, etc.

Qubit is well suited for companies that not only want access to data, but are also truly willing and able to take meaningful action based upon these insights. Qubit allows you to capture so many events and segment your customers in many different ways, but it is really only worthwhile if you are able to then take action and actually utilize these insights.

Qubit is being used as a personalization engine to A/B test features. We also use Qubit to give our design team quick and easy access to allow them to add or modify content that is added to users' unique personalization while browsing the website.
  • Qubit's support is fantastic, very knowledgeable of the current industry.
  • Qubit allows us to quickly iterate over new versions of features to A/B test.
  • The workflow, for developers, could be more well-documented. But perhaps I haven't found the documentation for this.
Qubit is great for personalization, but I've heard from our analytics team that pulling custom segments could be improved in terms of reporting.

[Qubit is] Used to organize aggregate user experience data and streamline our business process of providing them with the most functional and user-friendly experience possible. We design online retail sites and qubit allows us to ensure the quality of that shopping experience.
  • Very professionally operated, and with consistent customer service
  • Lots of possibilities to build out
  • Tag management
  • Speed can sometimes be lacking
  • Tag data access
  • Could be a little more user-friendly and not so geared toward engineer types
Tracking the origins of certain users and their arrival at our sites. This then allows us to get a more fully formed view of the customer journey and understand the context of their viewership.

  • A/B testing
  • Personalization
  • Tag management
  • Reporting on A/B test results
  • Affect it has on the speed of the website
  • General reporting and access to data that they collect through the tag

Qubit is addressing several significant needs for multiple departments (Customer Service, IT, Marketing, User Experience) within our company:

  • User Experience Testing
  • Customer Journey Reporting
  • Dynamic Customer Segmentation
  • A/B Testing
  • Mobile Experience Testing
  • Data Integration
Limited IT resources mean that we do not have time to make all of the necessary integrations or tests we would like to see. Qubit helps us move with more speed to market advantages.
  • Tara and Trip have been excellent contacts and resources for questions and answers. Their Service and support and extremely helpful.
  • The ease of test implementation is very handy. Requirements are discussed, the project is scoped and development starts. Updates are provided as steps are accomplished and tests are visible throughout the entire test period.
  • The provided "opportunities" section helps define what next steps may be taken from a project management standpoint. This is a two edged sword. 1) It provides some light directionality communication on what next mid or low tier priorities exist. 2) This also proves the investment of the tool by adding a third voice to the conversation and consistently communicating ROI in potential dollars to be gleaned from the work that could be done.
  • I have yet to be "impressed" by any of the design elements supplied by the design team. I know that they are working from a billable clock perspective, but many of the designs require two or three rounds of refinement before I have been happy with their finalized work. Even then, the design itself seems somewhat vapid. It may be that they have not been empowered to challenge formats or pages more specifically, but more often than not, I wonder what their background is, as many adjustments seem like design 101 from an eCommerce perspective.
  • The timeliness of design turnaround is the least expedient of the group. Tara's ability to launch a project is excellent, her developers and QA team seem to have legitimate 48-72 business hour turnaround times, but the design feels like it takes much longer. This is then compounded by the aforementioned required set of approvals during which additional adjustments are made. Again, I do not know what requirements are provided, but it is the only part of the relationship that I would deem a "pain point."
  • I would like to see a more Robust Customer Feedback tool or the addition of a automated report. There are plenty of false negatives or false positives in the reporting and so the breakdown within the tool doesn't help a great deal. Segmenting by type is more helpful, but the positive negative is often not correct.
Qubit works well in certain situations, but any internal backlog in IT, specifically Data Integration or Development, will run into consistent issues between published tests, the ability to hard code winning tests and the actual use of the data engine that Qubit provides. Having a fully Functional IT team is necessary in order to make the best use of the tool. This is somewhat at odds with some of the work we are requesting them to do for us, based on the fact that our IT backlog is significant. In short, we are using Qubit to provide additional IT bandwidth, but Data integration requires a decent amount of IT bandwidth.

We use Qubit across all three of our domains in the company. We mainly use it for A/B testing as it's easy to collect and analyse data, and we also use it to add custom features on [our] site that are temporary. In some cases, it's easier to use Qubit for certain campaigns rather than changing the structure of existing pages and releasing.
  • Quick implementation and deployment.
  • Good analytics dashboard.
  • Being able to save segments is a good new feature as it saves lots of time.
  • Takes a while for the tests to inject, sometimes it's visibly noticeable. Would be good to have an option whether to include jQuery or not which could reduce the library size and improve the loading speed.
  • Sometimes Qubit engineers write complex code for tests that should be a few lines of code.
  • On a few occasions there have been live issues with segmentation etc, which has caused tests specific to certain smaller markets to become visible to all markets.
Qubit is great for quick code deployment. There have been a few occasions where there are live issues and Qubit has been extremely useful for temporary instant fixes. Although the A/B testing is a great feature, we could probably build something in-house that is faster visibly. This is the biggest problem with Qubit - the speed of loading the code and tests.

Qubit is used for AB tests and wider MVT by the Ecommerce team, with the aim of improving customer experience on the website (where longer term fixes need longer timeframes / internal IT resource) and testing new ideas before these are added to the wider roadmap. It enables changes to be made at pace where, without an MVT solution, we would be unable to act as quickly.
  • Self service solution so that tests can be built in house without support.
  • Serviced offering for more complicated tests to be built.
  • Difficult to use interface means reporting on tests is clunky. While improvements are being made with Livetap, this then relies heavily on clients having their own analysts capable of manipulating SQL databases to get access to the information they need, which is less than ideal.
  • Reliability of data has proven problematic, with insufficient time spent validating the data within Qubit against other client sources before banding around results that later turn out to be incorrect.
  • Problems with service levels, with a lot of the strategist team not close enough to the tests or how Qubit works, and more focused on big numbers they can promote than whether a test has worked successfully / whether the data is statistically robust.
  • Difficulties using the serviced solution as often projects took longer than expected and communication on the progress of these was poor, making it difficult to work through a backlog of requests and manage expectations within the company in terms of delivery dates.
For a company where you have the in-house designers and an analytics team that could extract everything they need from the tool, it may be worth considering, but I'd be tempted to look at other tools in the market as alternatives.

We use Qubit as a Tag Manager and also as an Experiences manager across the site (Desktop & Mobile). We use the Tag Manager to integrate 3rd party tracking tags, but also some 3rd party functionality like product bundling tools, live web chat etc. We use the Experiences manager to provide fixes and enhancements to the website quicker than we could through development due to the live feed of experiences into our site through the tag manager. We also want to get into the space of running MVTs to steer our development agenda but have yet to get this up and running.
  • The UI of the tools are very clean, and easy to use. You don't need to work in IT or have any technical understanding to do the majority of tasks. This makes working on Qubit tags or experiences fairly easy and self explanatory.
  • You can control what tags / experiences are live very easily, and have full control over them in terms of what pages they fire on, to who they fire (traffic %), and what sites they fire on (production or staging or QA sites).
  • There is a good history tracking system built into both the Tag Manager and Experiences manager of when things were last changed and published. Helping manage changes efficiently.
  • When briefing experiences / tag changes into Qubit Engineers you spend a lot of time sat in queues waiting for the work to be picked up and built/executed. When the work is eventually started it does come back fairly quickly, it's just a shame you spend so long waiting for it to be done.
  • Often work comes back not quite as complete as you would like it, or in a position that is ready to go live straight away. We have an in house test team to review Qubit builds and we always have to go through 1 or 2 rounds of testing and fixing before something can go live to production.
Personally, I have only used Qubit as a Tag Manager & Experience Manager to make alterations to the front end of our site, and they do sit very well in this space in terms of functionality and control offered. The tool is easy to use and does achieve the results you want, albeit slower than you would want if you rely on Qubit Engineers to build your code/experiences.

In terms of where they don't sit well, I am unsure, as the few reasons I use them they do fulfill those requirements. I can't comment on the other functionalities they offer.

Qubit is being used by our Ecommerce team to supplement our website's capabilities and provide richer, cleaner user journeys in order to drive CRO. This is predominantly related to product merchandising but we have also used Qubit for more substantial experiences for customers during the Christmas period. The main problem it addresses is that we have a simple and restricting CMS. Qubit helps us serve experiences to customers in bespoke ways that we are not able to do with our CMS.
  • Easy to use basic mode. Drag and drop functionality with a simple interface makes Qubit user friendly for even basic digital users.
  • Powerful segmentation. Allows you to serve experiences with a single customer view.
  • Simple integration. Didn't take long to integrate with our website.
  • More options and flexibility in Basic Mode. Very restricted in some areas.
  • Reporting. In app reporting is very simple and often not relevant to the experience set up.
  • Insights are vague and largely unhelpful. Unless they become more intelligent they don't seem to add anything at the moment.
Qubit is well suited for use on websites built on basic CMS environments where functionality is limited. Qubit offers many options that would cost a fortune to develop on many CMS. Qubit is also well suited to content plans that target well defined customer segments. If you have an array of content developed for various customer segments, Qubit can help you set up simple journeys for all segments without ripping your website apart.

We use Qubit for A/B testing various features and functionality on our site. It gives us insight into how the tests are performing and it allows us to tweak the tests for better success. We also use their OpenTag service for moving all of our third party tags as well as some of our own internal scripts to the cloud for prioritization and offloading from our site.
  • Allows A/B testing of features/functionality on website
  • Provides insight into how tests are performing
  • With their OpenTag product, searching for a specific bit of code across all of your scripts/rules/etc., would be extremely useful.
  • Being able to revert back just a single script would be helpful or to have the ability to differentiate between two versions so that you could see what was changed on a script/tag level.
Our A/B testing has gone well with Qubit.

We use Qubit for A/B testing to improve conversion rate and to improve our overall customer on site experience. It allows us to make quick changes to category and product pages without the need for additional resources or development work. We are also able to use Qubit to support on site promotions or messages to customers.
  • Excellent account management team.
  • Robust tool that is easy to use.
  • Shared insights into what other online retailers in the marketing are doing.
  • Less reliance on man days/commercials as this can cause planning issues.
  • More in-depth training as to some of the more advanced tools on offer.
  • More in-depth analysis as to testing performance and how we should look to move forward with these results.
Qubit is very well suited to a business that can not easily make implementations to their site and want to improve both customer experience and site conversion quickly. It is an excellent tool for trialing new ideas and can also be used to understand customer behaviour patterns. I would say it is less appropriate for basic sites that do not really need to make amendments to their site.

Qubit was supposed to be our primary tool for AB testing and Personalisation within the CX team. The goal was to maintain a high volume of testing across all of our web properties. It was also supposed to deliver an effective platform for Personalisation which it never able to achieve.
  • The visualisations had a clear and modern design.
  • The developers had a coder friendly environment which incorporated familiar tools.
  • They offered a lot of integrations out the box.
  • The reports for experimentation were very hard to configure. They miss the basics like 'date range' which makes them very hard to use and hard to correct if you wanted to change last minute.
  • There's no possibility of adding javaScript to the Control variant which can lead to a lot of hacky work arounds.
  • Latency in the deliver of experiences. At one point we had an issue where Qubit's script was taking north of 30s to load.
  • Statistical confidence never came... you can't control anything when it comes to how their stats model works so you're very limited unless you're a large enterprise with huge volumes of traffic.
Qubit was the worst business decision our CRO program made. Their platform was not well suited to our needs and we failed dismally in not discovering this during our due diligence. The AB/MVT testing became unreliable and the business lost faith in a strong team because Qubit was unable to deliver. Moreover their analytics is just a reskined BI tool.

We have utilized Qubit mostly for design challenges on our website. Qubit has allowed us to A/B test more efficiently as well as merchandise more creatively to our customers where our platform couldn't.
  • Allows you to look at user experience data in a visual easy to read way.
  • We were able to GEO target customers and give them product selection based on weather, for an uplift in sales.
  • Our design team was able to be more creative with the Qubit tool.
  • Having a smaller customer base, the experiences always needed more data.
  • Depending on the web browser it was sometimes buggy when trying to view experiences or set them up in the tool.
Qubit is great for a site with high traffic and for A/B testing.

One department controls the roadmap, which is inputted into by many different departments. Qubit is primarily used as an A/B testing tool. We have tried to use their personalisation features but with limited success. We purchased professional services, which acted as a 'middle man' between our commercial organisation and the Qubit development team.
  • Professional services is incredibly knowledgeable. Many experiences we wanted to create would not have been possible without this.
  • Quick to fix issues we have raised in production.
  • Commitment to engaging our internal teams by running workshops across Europe.
  • Industry leading personalisation product. A shame we didn't get a chance to use it!
  • Delivery times. More often than not, delivery dates were missed. This was very frustrating throughout our relationship.
  • Production issues. We had several issues in production due to Qubit product changes that we were unaware of. This was unacceptable.
  • Professional services spread too thinly. Sometimes, our contacts took too long to respond, which was exacerbated massively when employees were on annual leave.
Well Suited for:

  • Verify internal changes made by A/B testing.
  • Using social proof to improve customer journeys.
  • Segmenting customers based on locations/languages/previous actions.
  • Targeting specific users by uploading CSVs.
  • Personalising the experience based on all of the above.
Not Suited:

  • Large builds take a long time and have many defects. This takes further time to fix them.
  • Quick wins can take a long time due to the build/QA queues that come as a result of the shared resource pool that's split amongst several clients.

Qubit is used by the optimisation team within the BI function. We are a centralised resource within the organisation and will work with numerous departments to help them run tests and experiences through Qubit.
  • Front end development work - We don't have enough resources to build the experiences ourselves so with the expertise of Qubit's in house development we can move much faster to get tests out the door, rather than wait for resources to free up internally.
  • Account Management - Our account managers are passionate and engaged and will go the extra mile to ensure we're getting good value out of the product.
  • Although it's not the most important feature in the world, a WYSIWYG interface would sometimes help speed up basic tests and changes on site.
If you are a small organisation, an enterprise solution like Qubit may not be the right choice for you. However, if you are a big company with the budget to spend on a very clever tool with expert help then this is ideal.

Our Ecommerce Department uses Qubit for testing new site features before pushing them live. We also use it to target customer groups during promotions and events.
  • Qubit is particularly good at helping us decide which features we should be testing on our site based purely on our data. This helps us ensure that we are only testing things that are going to provide us with the most value.
  • They are also very proactive at reaching out to us and are quick to respond to requests.
  • I would love to see a more flexible pricing plan so that I could purchase support as I needed it instead of in large bundles.
Customers well suited for Qubit are those that have an in-house analyst that can go through the data regularly as well as a website with significant enough traffic to ensure tests are completed in a timely fashion.

We currently use Qubit on site to carry out A/B tests, to geo-target specific locations such as cities and states to give our customers a more personalised experience, and to add site features quickly that would otherwise take a while to build in our web apps and release properly. We also use it to carry out any bug fixes that need urgent fixing that we can then fix properly after.
  • Geotargeting is great, we can target countries, cities, states, continents etc.
  • It is great for A/B testing, it's easy to see clear results.
  • Deployment is almost instant.
  • Sometimes the sand box area/test editor areas become unresponsive and don't load, showing no errors either which is annoying if we want to pause/publish tests.
  • There have been a few occasions where the segmentation has broken, resulting in geo targeted promos showing in the wrong location and for all users.
  • I've found that the Qubit engineers overcomplicate tests, I'm not sure whether this is to charge more time to the company or if the just have different approaches but some tests that have been given to Qubit to write seem like overkill.
  • The response time could be improved. Sometimes if there are live issues and we email urgently the response time can be at least a day, which by then the issue is fixed but we've already had to pause/amend our tests.
Qubit is great to perform A/B tests with. The UI is good, and there are lots of segmentation and trigger options. It's good to build new tests and easy for JS developers to go in and release features super quick.

Shop Direct are an extremely data driven company and we primarily use Qubit's tag management and ABn experimentation frameworks running anywhere from 50 to 100 experiments per month across our 4 retail brands. One of our core goals around experimentation is to continue growing and so far Qubit has proven to be very flexible and scalable
  • Experimentation at scale - running large amounts of AB and multivariant experiments
  • Great customer service - no matter what the issue, we've always had the support we need to ensure we stay on track
  • Allow us to run ABns at 100%!! Sometimes we need to be able create a custom control (empty) and a variant but Qubit only allows us to run it at 95% which means we're then losing 5% of traffic
  • Functionality testing of multiple experiments simultaneously to understand the implications of combined experiments in the same area - we had to create our own functionality to do this
So far it's proven extremely capable of experimentation (my primary use)
