It's a great platform for collecting passive and active insights. You can operationalize research lifecycle from participant administration through session administration and insight management.

UserTesting is well-suited to smaller teams that can't facilitate the gathering of participants for tests. It's also good for teams that don't want to deal with reserving space or maintaining the equipment necessary to facilitate these tests in person.

Instrumental to my research workflow

UserTesting is great when you need quick feedback and your test is fairly structured. It's not as suited for concept testing or another type of study where you need to ask a lot of follow up questions or where you need to do a fair amount of explanation. It also doesn't work in situations where you have to share something behind the firewall.

A powerful platform for recruiting and conducting user testing of all varieties

Besides efficiently capturing session recordings that are easy to edit and share, the main value UT provides us is allowing us to scale our research activities without hiring additional headcount. Most of this scaling is possible by allowing us to efficiently recruit security professionals to provide feedback on our products and services. Overall, UT is a not a cheap solution, but it's definitely cheaper than hiring.

UserTesting is perfect for someone who wants to earn a little income on the side. It’s not going to replace a full time job but it’s perfect for someone looking to make a few dollars on their down time! I like to do a couple 10-minute recordings a day which earns me $20!

Fantastic Usability Tool - Needs a Better Pricing Model

UserTesting is a fantastic tool for conducting unmoderated usability tests. It has a huge panel of participants who usually complete any usability test within a matter of minutes or hours. The tools they provide for creating the tests are easy to use and comprehensive. In almost any situation, I think you could get quality usability feedback about your product in a really short timeframe. They have also added the ability to conduct in-person interviews with members of their panel, which is a pretty powerful offering (although it does cost extra).

If you need to conduct testing with a really specialized type of user, and if you can provide that panel of users yourself, then you may not need to pay for UserTesting. The main benefit to UserTesting is the panel of test participants they offer. You can provide UserTesting with your own test participants, but if you plan to do that a lot, then there are cheaper options available (Userlytics, UserBrain.net, TryMyUI, etc.).

Spend research time doing research - not recruiting

UserTesting is well suited for
  • Getting user feedback on a concept / topic when the intended users are a generic, easy-to-come by persona (e.g., homeowners)
  • Usability testing
  • Preference testing
  • Customer journey mapping / user requirements gathering
UserTesting is less appropriate / not as well-suited for:
  • Recruiting very specific types of people or conducting testing where background knowledge is key (e.g., architects, surgeons, etc.)
  • Conducting tests where more than 10 people are needed to reach significance (e.g., information architecture, surveys, etc.)
  • Tests with login credentials or checkout processes where each participant will need an (you can do these, but they can be cumbersome)

Supercharge your customer insights for powerful results

UserTesting is an excellent tool for exploring customer sentiment for a variety of business challenges. From needs finding and design validation, to messaging tests and intercept surveys, their platform enables us to quickly and efficiently gauge the impact of our choices. And, most importantly, UserTesting can help save companies from themselves. When we first deployed UserTesting, a very senior executive sent an email regarding the visibility/obviousness of a core app feature. Normally, this would have led to weeks of meetings, emails, and production tests. Instead, a single test produced a chorus of customers stating they had no trouble finding the feature. Fire drill canceled.

UserTesting Offers Great Feedback for our Development Needs

UserTesting is doing a great job for our needs and I would highly recommend them. UserTesting makes it easy to setup a survey and get it published quickly so we can get immediate feedback on websites and concepts we are developing. We have found that the feedback is incredibly useful in our development process. There was not much training involved to get us up and running quickly.

Simple Usability Tool to Optimize User Experience design

Score 7 out of 10
Vetted Review
Verified User
Review Source

Likelihood to Recommend

UserTesting is well suited when testing user experience design or new content of an e-commerce website which is generating 1000 or more visitors a day and has basic product content. UserTesting is not suited when testing websites with very low traffic and minimal content. Because testers won't have enough design specifications or elements to navigate or content to consume. So, their test results would be inaccurate as well. In addition, it would bring down the rating of those testers and waste dollars of testing client, resulting in lower ROI for both.

Quick with long-term research capabilities, but could use a facelift.

UserTesting works best for public-facing products. It can be difficult to test unreleased products. User studies are only as good as the researcher so biases can be a real problem when scripting a study and interpreting the results. An untrained team might not be able to utilize the platform appropriately and a mature research team might have their own preferred methods.

Be sure you have the resources to use the platform. For our organization, it would be ideal if we had a PT or FT position dedicated to setting up tests, recruiting from our own list, watching videos, etc. There is a bit of a learning curve, and it is worthwhile to purchase some time with one of their consultants in your first year to get tips on successful tests.

It’s a good tool but takes effort to plan, test, and review results. Results do come in fairly quickly (a matter of a couple of hours). It’s not set and forget, you need to plan your tests and interpret the results.

Best suited to get quick results where protons are up and ready to go for testing. Not that great for native mobile app test prototypes to emulate the swipe and side scroll action. Dev teams and security teams are apprehensive of using the SDK, so a workaround for that would be appreciated.

UserTesting is a must-have for uncovering customer feedback and usability insights about your product.

It's great for all things usability, heuristic or task-based testing, especially if you have high fidelity prototypes. It is also great for user interviews (with your own user base or theirs). It's less useful in my opinion when asking for opinions or preferences from participants, or when you want to target a super specific audience.

Score 9 out of 10

UserTesting is great if your user is more of a general type of person. If you're looking for highly technical or specialized job roles, you may not find what you're looking for. Also, you can't vet a user before they take your test so you have to trust in your screener or trust in customer service replacing the test for you.

User testing is very suitable for A/B testing of websites, landing pages, ads, etc. Also, for checking your app/website features for different browsers and operational systems. Also, very well suited for proofing/exploring the customer journey that you develop. Also, well suited for analyzing the heat map or customer reactions through a webpage. Not well suited for physical products, e-books, or digital products.

UserTesting is well-suited for initial product development or major functionality or Workflow changes. It provides quicker feedback during the design phase or design sprint. It has a huge pool of users across the globe.
