What is WordPress?

Wordpress is an open-source publishing platform popular with bloggers and a content management system. The appearance of a Wordpress site and many of its functions are managed through themes, and further customizable through altering code, though altering code is not required; templates and plugins to expand its capabilities are plentiful. Wordpress features integrated link management, and a search-engine friendly permalink structure. WordPress now allows multiple blogs to exist within one installation. Websites may host their own blogging communities, controlling and moderating content from a single dashboard.

Wordpress is popular due to its simplicity and modifiability. Furthermore implementing Wordpress costs only time. Two paid versions exist. The $99 premium plan allows a user an ad free custom domain with 13GB of space and advanced customization. The $299 Business plan allows unlimited space and supports eCommerce as well.

Squarespace and Wix make it easy for anybody to design a quick website, but lack the customization and power to make a good website. I moved our companies site from Squarespace to WordPress simply because I could not build the site I was envisioning in Squarespace, nor could I add necessary plugins and code to give our site an edge in SEO WordPress.

I have used Weebly and local web hosting software, and for a small scale site, they were appropriate. With the size of our online store (over 1,000 products), however, WordPress was the obvious choice! We decided to use WordPress when we opened our store several years ago, and we have never looked back! It handles our site with ease and has grown right along with us. We couldn't be more satisfied!

I chose to compare Shopify to WordPress because I develop a lot of ECommerce websites for my customers. WordPress, by far, offers more functionality. The WoCommerce plugins can be a little challenging to set up but is well worth the effort with the extensions they offer. WordPress is easier to set up.

I have used Wix websites for another business and although they have a free version it's littered with advertisements. In order to eliminate the advertisements you have to upgrade to a paid plan. The Wix paid plans do not include any apps. You must later choose to buy any needed apps from the Wix app market to use on your website. Whereas the WordPress software is open source, and it is available for free for anyone to use. You do have to pay for hosting and for your domain name with WordPress. However, cost is still less than Wix and you're allowed to choose your own providers for those options. Overall, WordPress beats Wix with flexible plans and a variety of free plug-ins and add-ons. The only reason to choose Wix over WordPress is if you're willing to pay more for drag and drop capabilities versus having to have an eye for style and layout.

While all website hosting requires a fee (except for some free blogging services), the primary options for a CMS (Content Management System) are varied but none come close to the popularity and widespread use of WordPress. The primary competitors are Wix, which provides a few templates and very little true customization, like making Wix look like your favorite website. Additionally, Wix has some features that are tightly integrated, like a shopping cart. The same goes for Squarespace, which many people choose because it has an optionally integrated shopping cart. Joomla! is much more like WordPress in that it doesn't have an integrated shopping cart, but just like WordPress, you can add a plugin for that capability or just use some code from PayPal to facilitate shopping. Other features besides shopping carts are mailing list subscriptions, forms, and the like. Overall, they do nicely but these competitors can be stubbornly inflexible and don't give people what they want. They just don't have the open flexibility of WordPress to get your site to do most precisely what you want it to do and look how you want it to look.

Webflow is great if you are working with a designer because most designers will be able to create pages directly in the Webflow interface. However, updating content and images in Webflow is a little clunkier. If you're looking for something that will allow you and your clients to more easily update content in the long-term, WordPress is the best option.

WordPress is easier to use than Drupal or Wix. Drupal still requires an IT back-end admin to upgrade the code and successfully manage the site. Wix provides full user control of the user experience but acts as a page builder vs. a content management system. All are good solutions but I prefer to work in WordPress.

In truth, we have never used any other platform, as we found Wordpress very early in our online development and it served us well. I believe that if the horse is not sick, don't shoot it. As Wordpress continues to develop and evolve, it has always met and in many cases exceeded our needs.

Wix was considered but was then rejected once we realized we could not self-host. WordPress allows self-hosting, while Wix does not.

Joomla was considered but required much more technical experience on behalf of the people who would be posting content. WordPress is much easier for people who just need to get information out there to use. There is basically no learning curve.

Drupal has a small following for themes, as is the add-on market. It's not great for basic sites and blogs, so while we were considering it we found WordPress to be better in most of these regards. There is also a kind-of-steep learning curve to Drupal.

In the beginning we used CoffeeCup HTML Editor, which was a nice little program, but it bound us to using one specific computer to do all tweaks and updates and we had to wait to upload changes and it was a real hassle. For a limited website that doesn't need to be changed often that would be fine, but WordPress suited our needs much better.

We chose WordPress because our interest at the moment is geared towards an institutional presentation and opening a new channel of communication with the client, and WordPress has one of these premises as its native. Speaking on the communication channel, we created a page with a form and have contact information.

It was important for our business needs that it be easy to manage our website for non-technical staff. WordPress was significantly easier to use compared to Drupal. While it is possible that staff could have been trained on Drupal, WordPress required minimal training in order for our staff to post blogs and make content changes. Drupal also didn't have the same level of online support that WordPress had. If there was anything we wanted to do with WordPress, we could easily find how to do it with a quick Google search. This was not the case with Drupal.

Drupal is a much more complex beast. While simple sites can be created with Drupal, it has a larger learning curve. Additionally, upgrading to newer versions of Drupal is wrought with difficulty. There has been no clear upgrade path for the last 4 or 5 versions, often requiring code changes and a complete redesign of content. This is supposedly changing with newer versions, but I haven't seen this in practice yet. WordPress upgrades are simple and straightforward. Themes and plugins are often compatible with newer versions, except in well-known circumstances. Overall, the learning curve and daily care and feeding of WordPress are much lower.

Both Blogger and WordPress have their benefits, but I think since Blogger was bought out it has lost its edge. I think WordPress is just a superior platform for blogging. Blogger is user-friendly but overly available to all, so it is hard to make your blog stand out over the rest. WordPress is more complex, and so it gives you more opportunities to be creative.

Many use other content management systems, or other online blogging platforms, but WordPress for me is the most functional, reliable, and just the easiest and best one to use. I've used Joomla, Blogger, and Tumblr in the past, mainly for personal use, but Wordpress can do this very well, as well as being scalable for more professional projects. It is simpler to use and works just as well if not better.
