There are so many ways it could improve with just smoother functionality and UI/UX, mostly in the ways I said it needed improvement that are quite major. But overall I think it has the right ideas and tries to offer a lot of options for marketing tasks and a solid system for working with a marketing funnel.

Mailchimp

Managing our lists with our old .html mail provider had challenges. We were re-creating our master subscriber list each time we were ready to send another campaign. Using tags, Mailchimp has enabled us to easily manage our subscribers and the unique content that each receives. It's great to get feedback on our campaigns from the analytics that Mailchimp records, and how we compare to other organizations of our size. We have found Mailchimp helpful in medium and large lists. We don't use it as much with small lists because the time to create a campaign for such a small audience is better spent elsewhere. For smaller lists, we use Outlook mail-merge. I've been disappointed by the number of subscribers who let us know our emails are going into their spam folders, particularly Gmail users. But after engaging with them personally, we're usually able to help them redirect those messages into their inbox.

Pros

Act-On

  • Act-On's customer service is exceptional, they are quick and thorough when you are needing help. For example, we could not figure out how to automate a birthday date for our birthday campaign and the representative was able to walk through the process with myself and another team member. This is a strength of Act-On because many other companies do not have customer services that will speak with you, they direct you to blogs or informational sessions.
  • The landing pages that Act-On has created for use on the web is exceptional. The formatting is very user-friendly and the templates are great to navigate. The landing pages allow you to make the page fit whatever campaign or reason you are in need of. This is a strength of Act-On because the landing pages resolve the issue of having to create actual web pages.
  • The spam feature of Act-On's emails is a great add on. This feature allows you to test how the spam alerts are triggered in your email and how you can fix it. This has helped many emails be developed in a way so that they reach many more people than they would have without this feature. many other programs do not have this feature.

Mailchimp

  • Contact list creation - this is a real strength because I can either enter individuals in separately or from a database or Excel spreadsheet.
  • The ability to time the release of communications is especially helpful. I am involved in a volunteer capacity and Mailchimp allows me to do the work I need to do when I want to do it - and then send it out at a predetermined time!

Cons

Act-On

  • Building email and landing page templates are difficult, the drag and drop builder is not straightforward, and requires coding knowledge
  • The workflow tool is cumbersome and not as intuitive as I'd expect a best in class marketing software's to be
  • Domain connections and domain management functionality made it difficult to manage multiple company domains and subdomains for pages
Kyle Moloo | TrustRadius Reviewer

Mailchimp

  • Issues with MS Outlook--because Outlook (so I've read and heard) depends on coding particular to MS Word, as opposed to more generic html-based formatting code, things can get really wonky in an email viewed in Outlook, such as text not wrapping properly around graphic images, horizontal line of images showing up vertically, etc. It's a coding issue. Believe me, my IT friends roll their eyes when we discuss this, and my non-tech clients' eyes glaze over when I try to explain why they should look at their test emails in their browsers or other mail software for a proper viewing rather than in Outlook.
  • Feedback tab interrupting the right scroll bar. What a pain to lose the scrollbar for a half-inch of screen area.

It's good, but not quite brilliant. Some parts of the interface are still a bit outdated. The product has been evolving very fast, though, and I believe in a few months it will be up there with the best of them, interface wise as well.

Overall, Mailchimp is a great tool for a nonprofit like the one I manage. It organizes constituent data easily, has a user-friendly interface, and powerful, user-friendly tools to design sleek-looking emails. Finally, it has reporting tools that help the user refine and target campaigns and learn from the results of prior emails.

I have always found them quick to respond to my query by web inquiry. In those instances when I call, I have always reached help quickly. I have, in the 4+ years that I've used Mailchimp, never seen an issue that restricted the use of their software/tools. I don't know of a single time when they're system crashed or went down. I could be wrong, but I honestly haven't experienced any issues with outages, errors or unplanned downtime

I haven't noticed any slow speeds from Mailchimp or their tools. I think the landing pages load quickly and look nice. The email reports and editing operates smoothly and doesn't take time to load. Additionally, when I use Mailchimp in conjunction with Zapier + Hubspot I don't notice any drag between any of these tools

Since we start using Act-on for ourselves and our clients, we have been supported very well. Often we need to integrate with legacy systems and we find the support team on our side during the whole endeavor. Always asking if they can help us further, always willing to do a better job. The support of Act-On is one of the main differentiators

The support for Mailchimp All-in-One Marketing Suite is great. Any time any of our employees has experienced any difficulties or even just had a simple question, the support team is always super responsive. They go above and beyond to make sure that all questions are answered, a resolution was provided for any problem, and that we understand the full capabilities of their platform.

What impressed me most is that Act-On showed full committment in making our implementation successful, even when it required additional support from their team. It's pretty easy to get up and running! There's a slight learning curve on a few things, but once you find where everything is located, you can import your list and send your first email. It really makes our clients feel great to see how quickly they can get that first email out.

Alternatives Considered

Act-On

Act-On does most everything that Marketo and HubSpot can and Act-On does some of them better and some of them worse. I've outlined the strengths and weaknesses of Act-On already. I am familiar with Marketo and HubSpot but not familiar enough with them to create a matrix type of comparison. Some of the differences are just different, not better or worse. For example, Marketo throws all the contacts into a master list of sorts and segments are created via queries. Act-On has user-created lists and segments built off each list.

Mailchimp

While both of these are viable options, Mailchimp’s user interface seemed much more intuitive and was a much better visual design. Being a creative person, I appreciated that and wanted to give it a chance based on that alone. But beyond the aesthetics, one of the other programs didn’t have the level of customization that I needed, and the one that did have it was not easy to use. Mailchimp was the clear winner in my book.

Mailchimp over the years I've used it has grown in leaps and bounds. They have added so many additional features than were previously available. They are truly an all-in-one marketing platform now.If you're a small operation and just want to add email to your marketing efforts, they're there for you. If you're a larger operation and want to start sending postcard advertisements, they can do that. If you'd good with that and want to kick up your marketing by going social, you can do that on their platform. They are truly able to be as small as you need, but also get quite large in whatever it is you'd like to do through their system.

Return on Investment

Act-On

  • Consistently positive ROI: very specific ROI tracking and successful campaign tracking across various mediums: email, website, etc...
  • Negative: Difficult on-boarding, sometimes seems like UI is outdated, so training first time was quite difficult.
  • Negative: Quite expensive compared to other similar solutions

Mailchimp

  • The click reports have been amazing for helping target digital leads that may not have yet taken a next step but are quietly, actively engaging with content.
  • The ability to quickly A/B test subject lines and get detailed reports on the campaign have really helped drill down what language to use in campaigns moving forward.
