Adobe Target

Adobe Test & Target is a tool that delivers what it says, it offers insightful results to help improve user experience and performance. However, it does require thoughtful planning, road map, proper technical staff in order to fully maximize the potential of it and leverage its capabilities to benefit your operation. But that is not the problem of the software, it is the preparation the team is required to have in order to succeed with this tool

Oracle Eloqua

Eloqua is well suited for clients with the need to automate marketing tasks to save on time and money. This would be most marketing teams and primarily B2B. Eloqua may be used for B2C marketing but there are better fit products for that.Eloqua is especially great for large and/or complex marketing, sales, and IT teams. It has the ability to be customized to meet their needs while not being extremely difficult to setup and manage. It has functionality that its competitors lack to support global, large marketing teams.

Pros

  • The product interface is very easy to use. Tests are easy to set up and manage.

  • Segmentation - Being able to target employees based on HR data is huge. Before Eloqua, we were doing 'batch and blast' emails because we didn't have an easy, quick way to set up distribution lists.
  • Analytics - Before Eloqua, we used our work email account(s) to send communications. Obviously we were not able to track opens and clicks using Lotus Notes/Outlook, and this has been critical in the evolution of our communication strategy.
  • Integration - I know our marketing teams are using our external instance of Eloqua and integrating it with our other digital tools (like Salesforce) to create robust campaigns.

Cons

  • From the development standpoint, tests are not any easier to set up than they would be manually. They actually are more complicated and provide more work to our development team.
  • The software is extremely expensive. You cannot segment your tests or campaigns by geo-targeting, for example, unless you pay extra for that portion of the package.
  • Customer service was easy to get into contact with, but your consulting time with them is very limited, and they weren't always knowledgeable about the issues you needed help with.
  • The software is mainly centered around the "Target" portion of the product (I would say about 75% of the product is devoted to this). Once testing completes, there are many options to push your winning campaigns live and target them to specific segments. Unfortunately this adds to the expense of the software; you pay by impressions. We also use an external ad display software. For these reasons, we did not use any of the targeting portion of the product, which left 75% of it unusable.
  • Test results are real-time, but we found they weren't always accurate. For example, when we would implement the winning campaign from a test, we often found no drastic improvement in conversion, or sometimes it even converted worse.

  • I would love a capability to perform mass deletions. If I want to delete an asset, there should be a prompt that says, "Delete this asset and all dependencies?" or something similar. Our instances are becoming very cluttered but the process to delete old assets is incredibly time consuming and frustrating.
  • Spell Check - This seems like a fairly easy functionality to add. While we encourage our users to craft their messages in Word first, some write their emails directly in Eloqua and miss spelling/grammar errors.
  • Tables - We have a lot of people submit content that contain a table. It would be wonderful if there was an "Insert Table" option or a way to create and edit tables within Eloqua.
  • Email a contact - When I use the 'email a contact' feature when I'm working on an email, it sends the email to the recipient as if it's coming from me. It does not keep the sender information that I put in the email settings. This is incredibly frustrating as employees will ask me to send them an email that they weren't included on, and when I use the Email a Contact feature, it appears in their inbox with my name as the sender instead of the CEO (or whoever the sender was of the email from the settings menu). This should be changed to reflect the information in the email settings instead of sending from the Eloqua user.

The software is so expensive that we can only use it in limited capacity. It does not simplify any work for our development team in our testing process. We also found that testing results from it weren't always accurate.

Price is always a factor. Switching from one platform for another is almost never a lateral move. If you intend to switch purely for monetary reasons, you may want to reconsider due to the large step backwards to do so. This will cost more than the savings would catch up to in years. If you have legitimate concerns about the platforms performance, I would do a lot of research to make sure the competitor doesn't have the same or worse. Also, another thing to consider is with a newer platform competitor means fewer experts to turn to, either as consultants or new hire employees. A lot of the times customers tend to think the grass is greener on the other side, but really the grass is greener where you water it.

Online Training

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Test & Target is far superior to these other solutions, but is really meant for a more advanced company. Optimizely is better for a startup because of price point and ease of use.

Personalization is only as good as your data. If you don't have faith in your data, personalization can be detrimental. Also, personalizing sender information can be time consuming and make the level of effort prohibitive.

Return on Investment

  • Our site is primarily motivated to generate more traffic and conversions (leads) for our clients. In using this software, we had hoped to optimize our traffic and lead generating pieces so that we maximized signups.
Sarah Schick profile photo
  • Eloqua has helped us with our overall strategy. Building a campaign requires us to think through certain steps, and the effect of this planning is a more cohesive customer experience. This is great for "branding" but it's also great for the bottom line. Since we started with Eloqua, revenue has tripled. Eloqua's contribution to this growth is at least 33%.
  • Our sales team can focus better because lead scoring tells them who best fits our ideal customer profile, and which of those people are showing interest through their engagement with us. We have a healthy pipeline and lead scoring allows our sales team to use their time more efficiently.
