1. We changed ship dates on individual product pages depending on customer location so they would have an accurate timeline for their orders. This really helped lower our volume of customer service calls on tracking orders.2. We have stores as well as an online presence. With Target we were able to advertise sales on b-stock items from our warehouse to our local customers without letting those that live outside a certain radius see the promo.3. If your marketing team doesn't have a tech background this software has a steep learning curve. There is quite a bit of manual configuration required. The image carousel is one example that we struggled with.

Oracle Eloqua

If you are sending some fairly basic, simply designed emails, Eloqua is perfect for you! It shares an easy tracking system and basic metrics after each campaign is sent out, and you can schedule emails in advance and specify details about how they are sent. While the templates are fairly standard, they are easy to update and work with, and if you don't have very intricate designs you're using, they will work just fine. The emails are mobile friendly and send quickly, and overall the system is simple to use and understand. There are options for enhanced functionality, A/B testing, and more for those who want to go deep into their email campaigns, but it's also a great system for simply sending out communications and tracking them, particularly if you send a lot of emails and just want a standard format to go out whenever you need it.

Pros

  • The test report page is very intuitive. It is very easy to analyze a test based on different segments such as new and returning users.
  • Having confidence levels inserted into the reporting tool is a key feature. While it is a simple feature, it allows users to easily understand when results are significant.
  • We have recently created swim lanes for traffic and this has been very helpful to make sure that different tests are not crossing over in terms of traffic.

  • Segmentation - Being able to target employees based on HR data is huge. Before Eloqua, we were doing 'batch and blast' emails because we didn't have an easy, quick way to set up distribution lists.
  • Analytics - Before Eloqua, we used our work email account(s) to send communications. Obviously we were not able to track opens and clicks using Lotus Notes/Outlook, and this has been critical in the evolution of our communication strategy.
  • Integration - I know our marketing teams are using our external instance of Eloqua and integrating it with our other digital tools (like Salesforce) to create robust campaigns.

Cons

  • There should be some more clarity around what makes a test significant. While this can be decided by the client themselves, some direction from the tool would be helpful.
  • Also, if there was an easier way to organize campaigns and search for them it would be helpful. Right now there is just a long list of campaigns and you have to rely on search to find a specific campaign. What if you don't know the name of the test?

  • Eloqua could do better at integrations. There are limited app providers compared to other automation platforms but if you can develop a connection via their API or only have a need for a limited amount of integration this is not as much of an issue.
  • Eloqua could do better on their drag and drop/WYSIWYG email and landing page designers. This is a roadmap update for Oracle so should eventually be resolved but there is currently limitations to this builders.
  • Eloqua could do better at reporting. Their current primary reporting outlet is an old micro-strategies style reporting interface that can be confusing if you are not used to it.

The transition to Oracle Support has been a bit rough. It's not quite as easy as it used to be when Eloqua was running the show. If it doesn't get any more difficult and the quality of support is maintained, there will be no issue. But if support quality is degraded over throughout the rest of our term, that will be a major consideration when it comes time to renew.

In-Person Training

The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Alternatives Considered

We have looked at Optimizely but at this point are sticking with Test & Target. We like the integration it has with our Analytics tools such as Ad Hoc and SiteCatalyst. Also, we feel that Adobe has some interesting products that we would like to dig into in the future such as Audience Manager.

After being frustrated with my frankensteined lead machine for quite some time, I started seeing more information about marketing automation and content marketing around the web. This led me to identify Marketo and then Eloqua as interesting tools. At some point, I got a call from a sales agent at Marketo. I also requested contact from Eloqua. Apparently they both had me in their systems and had been nurturing me. After learning that fact, I was convinced I needed a marketing automation tool. Marketo probably saw me as a nearly ideal prospect because of my company's profile.My evaluation process centered around Marketo and Eloqua. Hubspot was written off early because their feature set was thinner than I wanted. Eloqua eventually won out because of their superior support and training services, the Campaign Canvas, the App Cloud, and, honestly, because Marketo's sales agent threw more FUD about the Oracle Acquisition than sold his own product

Oracle Eloqua makes it easy to scale because you're able to see exactly what works and what doesn't within one system. You're able to mimic campaigns that progress at rates you intended it to and to justify the ROI with real-time data. Since you can easily duplicate, it's easy to take a campaign and copy it across multiple brands.
