Considered Both Products
Optimizely Web Experimentation
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
Optimizely is better with the customization, Unbounce can make great looking pages but the interface is very limited and can be difficult to make design changes.
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
Optimizely is an all-in once service compared to the others I tested. Visual Website Optimizer (VWO) is very solid and probably a close second as far as I'm concerned. Their servicing was a little lacking which made it hard to ramp up the testing. Unbounce is very user-friendly …
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
Google Optimize was great, but our organization already had contracts with Optimizely Web Experimentation for their other tools. unbounce wasn't really an option either mainly because it was only a landing page testing tool and had to use their platform to host the tests. We …
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
unbounce's Visual Editor is what I'd expect out of Optimizely Web Experimentation, but I believe it's missing. Otherwise, Optimizely Web Experimentation is better.
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
Out of all of the split testing tools I have used, Optimizely has displayed the best performance and engineering surperiority. While it is expensive, for sites that get lots of traffic & have critical performance requirements, Optimizely is honestly the only split testing …
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
While they all do the same thing, I felt, and still feel, that Optimizely does it better. I felt like the other tool were too simple in format and analytics for the prices being charged and they also lacked reliable word-of-mouth. When talking to other professionals, Optimizely …
Chose Optimizely Web Experimentation
Honestly Optimizely is so much better then everything else, the only one that compares is Google Optimize, but it wasn't in this list. I don't think the others are worth while, as the data you get back and the responsiveness/smartness of the tests are not near as good as what …
unbounce
Chose unbounce
Unbounce is very similar all said and done to optimize. The main difference is in the pricing tiers and the templates that each of them offers. Each would be dependant on someone's specific business and I think is valuable to evaluate to determine which would be best for each …
Chose unbounce
In terms of pure landing page generation, Unbounce is of very high quality. We went with Unbounce over Leadpages because we felt they had more features, and the software itself was easier to use. When we moved on from Unbounce, we switched all of our landing pages over to HubSpo…
Chose unbounce
Unbounce is purpose built for landing page testing. Squarespace and other webpage builders are not set up to handle this efficiently. A/B testing tools like Optimizely are too isolated from the broader business use case. Other products like Google Analytics require too much …
Chose unbounce
I tried Optimizely which is bulky and buggy and is way more complicated than unbounce, I stopped using them after one day.
Chose unbounce
Unbounce is slightly different from Optimizely, Visual Website Optimizer and Google Content Experiments because it is essentially a tool for building landing pages rather than testing any aspect of your website. Unbounce solved a problem for us because we wanted to build …

Optimizely
Best for CRO initiatives, including testing variations of landing pages,
user flows, and product pages. Optimizely may not be suitable for more complex machine
learning models. To analyze the effect of the feature usage the way we will do in our solution. Using the audience to measure the success of the features Also, to the best of my knowledge, Optimizely is the only tool that can do all this.

As I am using this platform for a long time, I believe I am happy with the services I am getting from this outstanding software. It has made my landing page experience better than ever without any coding knowledge to apply. It has upgraded my business in a positive direction and I believe I am using this software for many years to come.

Pros
Optimizely
  • Powerful Stats Engine that drives conclusivity of outcomes and helps generate trust in results when shared to leadership and stakeholders.
  • Customizable metrics with various tags, properties, and attributes that allow users flexibility in what and how they architect their Optimizely analytics.
  • Flexibility for different levels of tech expertise, I live in the tool as an expert JavaScript and front-end developer, someone else might use solely the visual editor to click and make changes without knowledge of how to code.

  • AB testing is simple to set up. Clone a page make your changes and pit one or more against each other. Set the number of views and you're told the winner once the test is done. Simple
  • Tracking code is easy to add. Follow the straightforward instructions in the back end
  • Easy to add multiple domains to your account. So you can use the landing pages you build on numerous sites if you so desire

Cons
Optimizely
  • Google Tag Manager. Our challenge, it's a strange use case, but our challenge is that we don't have Google Tag Manager, so we can't integrate with GA4. And that's been a bit of a bummer. So I would like to be able to integrate with GA4 even without Google Tag Manager.

  • One of the cons of Unbouncewas the learning curve. We are very familiar now with the ends and outs but in the beginning, it would have been super helpful to have some sore of learning up front.
  • The pricing structure is not great for our particular organization. We will never need unlimited page views but we do often need more landing pages we make it work but the pricing model could be improved.
  • The reporting could be a little better. We supplement with some of our own trackings but for the most part, the reporting from Unbounce is a basic level understanding of how the page is performing.

I rated this question because at this stage, Optimizely does most everything we need so I don't foresee a need to migrate to a new tool. We have the infrastructure already in place and it is a sizeable lift to pivot to another tool with no guarantee that it will work as good or even better than Optimizely

The nonprofit discount makes it so affordable that my client was happy to continue their subscription all year round. They have used it to build landing pages to capture expressions of interest for their next recruitment window. It hasn't quite produced the sort of results we were hoping for, but I'm not sure that's Unbounce's fault.

Usability
Optimizely
Optimizely Web Experimentation's visual editor is handy for non-technical or quick iterative testing. When it comes to content changes it's as easy as going into wordpress, clicking around, and then seeing your changes live--what you see is what you get. The preview and approval process for sharing built experiments is also handy for sharing experiments across teams for QA purposes or otherwise.

Unbounce made it easy for my team to build landing pages for website and email. We gained valuable A/B testing insights and gathered information from visitors effectively converting them to leads. The Editor is straight forward and I was able to learn to use it on my own without instruction. CRM integration was easy and consistently worked.

Unbounce customer support is very strong. We have been able to connect with them via email and telephone mediums. They are very knowledgeable and can effectively help resolve difficult problems that are slowing us down. Overall Unbounce customer support is very professional. Our wait times have always been small or at least reasonable.

The tool itself is not very difficult to use so training was not very useful in my opinion. It did not also account for success events more complex than a click (which my company being ecommerce is looking to examine more than a mere click).

In retrospect: - I think I should have stressed more demo's / workshopping with the Optimizely team at the start. I felt too confident during demo stages, and when came time to actually start, I was a bit lost. (The answer is likely I should have had them on-hand for our first install.. they offered but I thought I was OK.) - Really getting an understanding / asking them prior to install of how to make it really work for checkout pages / one that uses dynamic content or user interaction to determine what the UI does. Could have saved some time by addressing this at the beginning, as some things we needed to create on our site for Optimizely to "use" as a trigger for the variation test. - Having a number of planned/hoped-for tests already in-hand before working with Optimizely team. Sharing those thoughts with them would likely have started conversations on additional things we needed to do to make them work (rather than figuring that out during the actual builds). Since I had development time available, I could have added more things to the baseline installation since my developers were already "looking under the hood" of the site.

Choose a subdomain that is appropriate for multiple types of pages. You don't want to have to keep changing it. Think about using Google Tag Manager to manage your Google Analytics code and event tracking. Build one landing page to completion. Then make a copy of it if you need to create variant pages.

Alternatives Considered
Optimizely
Optimizely Web Experimentation was more robust and able to handle the broad array of sites we run than VWO. It has been a great platform to easily add additional sites onto, but still providing a universal overview of all of them, making management a simple task.

Despite my review for unbounce being not the greatest review or score in the world, when stacked up against its two biggest competitors, I'd prefer Unbounce over Leadpages and Instapage. Leadpages drag and drop editor, integrations, and overall UI/UX is 10x worse than unbounce and unbounce really leads in the category of nice templates and quickness to a production landing page with much better options and integrations.

Scalability
Optimizely
It's incredibly flexible and adapts well to organizations of all sizes, whether you’re running a single site or managing multiple departments and platforms. The ability to deploy experiments seamlessly across different environments is a huge plus, especially for growing businesses. While it’s highly scalable, the last point would depend on the right team leveraging its full potential.

  • Used to collect click data while our GTM is down. Giving my team eyes on click data as a work around
  • able to push a winning test to 100% of users until devs can get to project, so fast implementation of a win
