We use Cert Capture to keep Resale & other tax exemption documents/letters on file for all of our dealers. It is only used by the Credit Department, and if we have a tax auditor come through. It keeps certificates on file and allows us to know when they are about to expire, as well as try to assist us in running a campaign to collect any new certs in certain states.
  • Storing arena for Resale Tax Exemption Certificates.
  • The need to hit Refresh several times throughout the process to upload a new cert can be tiresome, and on occasion we have to wait a long time for it to show up during one of those refreshes.
  • Campaigns can be clunky; not always notified which dealer accounts didn't get their email delivered, and sometimes dealers find the format to appear to be SPAM and so they do not complete it.
To my knowledge, we aren't aware of a great software for the Resale Tax Exemption Certificate need we have. So it does work to store, and collect, tax certs even if parts seem clunky to me. If we did not have it, it would make collecting & storing the certificates much more laborious.

We used Avalara in respect to our state sales and use tax compliance. We are a multi-state construction company and have different divisions offering a variety of services nationwide. Because we have nexus in a large number of states, researching all of the tax answers ourselves is not be feasible. Plus, tax rates changed dramatically across tax jurisdictions. We used Avalara to help us understand the complexities of sales and use tax.
  • Providing accurate tax rates across differing jurisdictions.
  • Providing accurate tax answers.
  • Providing tailored answers for the construction industry (tax compliance for the construction industry is immensely complex).
I would be very careful when using Avalara for industries outside of retail, for example. We are a construction company and didn't always find the most appropriate answers for our complex projects. Other resources are better suited for the construction industry. For example, TTR (Transaction Tax Resource) provides appropriate answers for more complex construction projects.

We partner with Avalara to help companies collect and remit sales taxes across the US, due to its relatively easy integrations to multiple GL systems, it can be integrated readily, thus, with proper sales tax mapping and nexus set up - create reporting for taxes owed by jurisdiction. It is a bit more like a rate database with product taxability - and is an excellent product for those with a relatively simple invoicing system - i.e., invoice and add taxes.
  • Amazing sales process.
  • Great marketing.
  • Loads of connectors.
  • Fun.
  • Service - too self-service with no personal resources.
  • Videos cannot be the only way to provide support.
  • Somewhat inflexible.
Avalara is well suited for ecommerce, simple integrations, unsophisticated or nonexistent tax departments, simple invoicing process with tax - it is a rate calculator with a taxability mapping interface which can allow one to set up tax and collect across the country without having to set up separate codes by state.

Avalara enables our finance department to accurately calculate sales tax, file the related tax returns and remit payment to the numerous tax authorities in an easy and user-friendly manner.
  • Sales tax calculation
  • Sales tax details
  • Easier to file back taxes
Businesses with customers in numerous states/localities without a physical presence there (or a limited presence) will greatly benefit.

The Finance departments at the 2 companies we own, both manufacturers, use it. One has been using it but will add more modules like Cert Capture while the other Company will begin using Avalara in 2020.
  • Communications
  • Follow-up
  • Follow-up is good but they could follow-up faster than they do
  • Earn trust faster - some of my past staff members lacked trust in Avalara
Sales tax management is tough. Companies of all sizes need help and will likely never be able to hire experts to manage it on their own. That said, I have used Avalara at a $10 billion company, a $1 billion company, a $100 million company and now with 2 companies - a $30 million company and a $40 million company. It is complicated. Avalara is good at making sure the right tax rates are applied to the right sales transactions.

We also need help managing International Sales, so, not sure how well versed Avalara is with that.

We sell in all 50 states. Avalara is a part of our ERP software (Dynamics GP). We use it to calculate sales taxes on our quotes, sales orders, and invoicing.
  • Seamless tax addition to documents without having to do anything.
  • The tax rates automatically update when new laws are passed.
  • Salespeople can look up accurate tax rates by address very easily for our quotes.
  • The option of showing a window with tax rate details, without having to drill down, would be helpful.
I appreciate that I am not depending on employees to calculate the correct amount of tax on orders. It is also nice to know that I can depend on the program to consistently not charge taxes to a customer on items that are non-taxable. All of these things ensure the accuracy of my documents and in the end keeps our customers happy.

We use Avalara in our Net Suite ERP system to calculate taxes. We use Certcapture to house our exempt certificates and Avalara submits our monthly returns to the states in which we have Nexus.
  • Calculate state and local taxes.
  • House exempt certificates.
  • File and pay tax returns to states.
  • Easier reporting website.
Avalara is the perfect solution to this new world of tax collection with the new State Nexus mandates.

I use Avalara for two companies -- one using a Shopify feed and the other that sells only on Amazon. Avalara solves my state sales tax filings for both companies. With the Shopify store, the feed is automatic and I just have to review the liability worksheet once a month. With the Amazon store, I have to upload transactions from Amazon and then review the liability worksheet. It's easy to pull returns and track filings.
  • My account rep (Tosca) has been excellent in dealing with any issues I many have.
  • Sales tax filings are timely.
  • It's easy to track and obtain copies of filings.
  • There are a ton of helpful reports.
  • For Amazon manual transaction upload, it would be great if there was an automatic way to pull the Amazon report and upload rather than reformat.
I've used other platforms and I don't think there is a more accurate or better platform for sales tax compliance on the market. It's better than doing it yourself. I would highly recommend Avalara.

Within our company, there is a financial area that is responsible for calculating taxes. From the IT department, we support this tool, both the AvaTax module and Returns. This tool allows you to simplify the calculation of taxes and their return.
  • Cheaper than others
  • Simple for financial staff
  • It has a previous demo
  • Need financial training
  • Tax calculation could be easier.
  • The calculation of returns could be adjusted more.
This tool has a very specific and defined role, so its use is not complex (at least for financial staff). It allows you to anticipate the calculation of taxes and returns.

It is used by the whole organization. Whenever we create invoices, the Zuora-to-Avalara connector automatically pushes the relevant invoice data to Avalara for AvaTax to calculate the amount of sales tax instantly. It addresses the issue of scalability, automation, and accuracy. We no longer have to keep up with the tax rate changes in any jurisdiction as AvaTax is always updated.
  • The tax has automatically calculated the instance that invoice is generated.
  • The sales tax rates are maintained on Avalara's side. Whenever there's a sales tax rate change for any jurisdiction, Avalara will update the rate.
  • The User Interface is very user-friendly. Reports can be constructed and filtered in many ways (by state, by types of documents, etc.)
  • Avalara doesn't have the ability to tax multiple jurisdictions if you have one invoice line item but have a quantity of more than 1. This is relevant for when you have 100 software licenses and these licenses are used throughout multiple jurisdictions.
  • Avalara needs to find a solution to handle and remit use tax that is not manual-intensive work.
  • It sometimes takes a while to connect to chat support when you try to get support during peak hours.
AvaTax has the ability to scale with your business as you are paying on a per-transaction basis. The amount charged per transaction is related to the tier in which you contract for. If there are very few jurisdictions in which you must collect and remit sales tax, then it might be more cost-effective to calculate tax and maintain rates yourself.

Avalara is integrated with our ERP system in order to tax our customers and remit taxes. When an invoice is created with customer information and the items are populated on the invoice, the system pings the Avalara system and gathers the correct tax rate and amount to put on the invoice. This ensures that our system is taxing the customer and we are remitting taxes correctly.
  • If there is a question about the tax on an invoice, it is easy to check the transaction and each jurisdiction of the tax.
  • It is easy to download reports to reconcile at the end of the month.
  • Anything can be downloaded to analyze the data.
  • When an invoice has been voided it is a little cumbersome to pull up. It would be great to see this along with the original invoice.
  • Make it easier to discuss problems instead of having to always go to the Account Rep.
  • Sometimes reports do not match the return. Having a discrepancy report or a way to identify them would be great.
  • The new upgrade makes it more difficult to find previous transactions.
If you are in difficult states to file or have more than you can handle staff-wise, then this is a great alternative. Avalara will provide a great way to pull all your data into a concise form and file the taxes for you. You must manage the business licenses and registrations in order for Avalara to file taxes.

Certifiably CertCapture

Currently CertCapture is used by our tax department and our Records department. CertCapture is currently being used to house all of our sales tax and fuel tax exemptions. We are also using the system to hold all of our customer's accounts.
  • The interface for CertCapture is fairly easy to use. Everything is more or less self explanatory and easy to navigate. Anything process wise that may be difficult at first is shown step by step in the "walk me through" guide.
  • Changes to accounts are easy to see and follow. We deal with a lot of timing issues between account changes and invoices. This allows us to see if the account was changed before or after an invoice was created.
  • Reporting of what documents are in the system, and who has them is quick and easy. We are constantly using the CertCapture reporting to clean up our ERP System.
  • There certificate management needs to have a better understanding of state laws and how each exemption certificate relates to it.
I find it as a great customer record tool and recommend it for any business that deals with a lot of exemptions from customers. They are expanding on outbound exemptions as well which is a plus if your company does a lot of tax exempt purchases.

We compared Avalara against a number of products in response to Wayfair. We liked the Thompson Reuters and SOVOS products and customer service better, but Avalara came in at a better price point and was the only system that currently integrates with Shopify+. We integrated Avalara with our NetSuite instance.

We currently utilize AvaTax and CertCapture. We are still doing our own returns.
  • The system works okay. It helps us manage rate tables and customers with multiple jurisdictions.
  • TERRIBLE and SLOW customer service. In fact, the worst I've ever experienced. It takes over a week to get a response unless you call-in, wait over an hour and get lucky with a knowledgeable rep. They love to pass the buck and point you to Avarala Help articles that are unrelated or not particularly useful.
  • Implementation - We went with their "guided implementation" to cut costs as we have a strong IT team and a lot of great internal and experienced resources. They were not helpful at all. No engagement (we had to reach out to them multiple times to get things moving), no project plan, limited guidance, slow responses and flat-out wrong recommendations. They gave us incorrect configuration information, and their data upload is downright antiquated. We had to CSV upload our customers (oh yeah, they don't know how to bulk upload data). We figured out a way to do it, but they also don't tell you any null values will delete those fields of data, so you get to do it all over again.
  • We then had to manually associate every single certificate for existing customers. We had to go through 3 reps and implementation types to properly handle marketplace facilitators (hint: setup an exempt customers in CertCapture like Amazon FBA/FBM, flow marketplace transactions through those customers, then create tax exemptions for each state that marketplace collects/remits on your behalf). We went live with lots of issues, and we're still working through several of them months later.
  • Their NetSuite integration is okay - but weak at best. Not intuitive at all. Permissions are a headache and we had to open a ticket to request they actually connect CertCapture correctly. All state liabilities also post to a single tax GL. If you want to report by state this is a challenge to reclass and reconcile.
  • Their reporting is mediocre at best . The reports they provide don't actually provide enough data to file your reports, likely because they want you to utilize their services and pay the $50/per filing for them to file on your behalf. If you have budget and you're not a small business, this would probably be fine.
  • UI - their User Interface is really pretty antiquated and frustrating to work with. Instead of having a single place to login and manage your account, there's an AvaTax login, there's an Avalara Admin login, there's a CertCapture login, and you have to handle them all separately. Many aspects just aren't super intuitive, and their Help isn't all that helpful. For instance, you can create a template cover letter to email to customers for exemption certificate requests, but you can't set it as a default form - unless you delete their default form and rename it (it took them 2 weeks to figure that one out).
Avalara is fine. It works, just barely. But for as big as they are and as much as they tout how wonderful they are, and for how aggressive as their sales team is, their system feels like it's the beat-up old Buick of tax automation software. Too bad they seem to have more integrations than others and come in at a better price point.

Avalara is used in our company mainly from the financial department, but my technological profile helps them when handling the tool. I have been able to use this tool and, without being an expert in economics, I have been able to use this tool, since it is very simple and intuitive and performs all the tax calculations automatically.
  • Calculate tax very close to reality.
  • Real time calculations.
  • Very focused on the American market.
  • I miss documentation in Spanish.
It works great thanks to its direct link between AvaTax and Salesforce via a prebuilt connection. Its use is very simple, even for my profile. Practically I found a connection with all the most important CRMs in the market, maybe if you use a less used one you may have problems.

We currently use Avalara Cert Capture as well as the Avalara for taxes. We keep all our certs stored in Cert Capture. Avalara files all of our returns, we are also currently using Monitoring, so we can see when we have potential liability. In some instances we are taking advantage of Registering with Avalara as well. Our Finance department is the only department using Avalara, but it affects the company as a whole because if we are not taxing our customers correctly it can affect everyone. It saves us time and money because we do not have to file returns and we can see where our exposure is.
  • Helps with returns
  • Files our returns
  • Helpful Customer Account Managers
  • Customer Support has been lacking.
  • Response time to cases lately has been too long.
  • Retaining and communicating when account managers are reassigned.
Avalara would be a good fit for a company just starting out. Avalara can help you get registered in different states and can help monitor where there might be tax liability when the new company grows. Avalara would also be a great fit for a larger company who wants to free up personnel because there are other projects that need to take priority. Also, in the growing world of taxes and the new Pandora's box, Avalara can help them with their tax liability and exposure. Avalara is always up to date on tax laws and rates, so it's easy to stay ahead of the game.

We are registered for sales tax in over 60 jurisdictions and AvaTax makes an administrative nightmare manageable. Avalara interfaces with our proposal program, Salesforce, as well as our GL package Microsoft Dyanmics GP (Great Plains). With over $60 million of revenue, we would not be able to accurately and timely calculate the taxes on our proposals and invoices without Avalara.

The only issue we have occasionally is the local jurisdictions taxes do not calculate properly in Salesforce. When these situations arise, the Avalara tech team and our IT department work together to resolve the issue.

We also have a Canadian entity which calculates the GST/HST and PST on our proposals and invoices. With the Canadian entity, I wish they had tax codes and determined the taxes without us having to do tax codes and tax rules. This is one area I would like to see improved so it would be more automatic like in the US. Overall, we are very happy with Avalara and would recommend it to other companies.
  • The respond to notices that are received timely
  • The tax calculation appears seamless
  • I like having the returns and confirmation of filing saved in archives
  • The Canadian tax calculations and filings for GST/HST and PST
  • Having the account representative reach out more when new things are available on the admin console or new interface
  • Doing one-on-one training through the internet
Avalara is a necessity when a company has multiple jurisdictions and has various items it sells that are taxed differently in various jurisdictions. In today's world and economic nexus, I think most businesses would benefit from a service like Avalara.

We are using Avalara across our whole organization that includes three divisions. The biggest challenge to our organization is understanding which states tax their own state agencies to include for sales tax calculations. The remaining divisions of our business are B2C and very straight forward with tax calculations.
  • Avalara's tax tables are accurate and updated timely across all the states we have a Nexus in.
  • Avalara's customer service is top notch, the treatment of customers is far better than any other service-based business I've worked with in the past.
  • Avalara integrates with many third-party platforms we use throughout our company, i.e Sage & Shopify.
  • The response times from the implementation team was very slow. I understand this is a result of the rapid growth of the company, so knowing that, it did not create hard feelings.
My experience with Avalara has been great so far but I have only used it tailored to my company's manufacturing and distribution realm, to both B2B and B2C. Inside this realm, Avalara is able to track and capture accurate sales tax data across all 21 states we have Nexus in and provide us information timely to file our sales tax returns. Avalara also excels at differentiating between government customers and regular customers with the tax code exclusions it has set up for its customers.

We are using AvaTax to calculate tax and CertCapture to manage our exemption certificates. We have also contracted to file returns but have had a problem with our legal department signing the POA. The application is used across the company for all locations. This helps eliminate storage use on our server of the certificates and gives us the confidence that we are billing the correct tax rates.
  • Keeps tax rates up to date
  • Reports are very concise and easy to read
  • They keep up well on rate changes
  • More person to person support contact rather than "watch this webinar"
  • Eliminate the rounding problems
Great source for tax info across the nation, state by state. They can provide simply worded explanations of what each state considers taxable purchases. Avalara is a good tool to use if doing business in states with home state rules. Let them calculate the tax rather than you trying to keep track of what and where to charge tax.

We use Avalara to manage sales tax from acquiring taxes rates at point of sale to filing returns. Our accounting system is Acumatica and our online store is through Shopify, both of which are integrated with Avalara. Using Avalara ensures correct tax rates are applied along with timely and compliant filing.
  • Dynamic acquisition and application of address-based tax rates
  • Tax filing per the current tax laws and regulations
  • Provide necessary data for monthly reconciliations
  • Support center often has long phone queues. It can be frustrating when you need immediate assistance
  • System gets bogged down around the time for approvals
It is well suited to businesses touching many tax jurisdictions because it can be difficult to keep up with changing tax rates and regulations.

We use Avatax and cert capture for our main business, but are in the process of implementing it for two of our acquisition companies. It is the best way to ensure compliance with Wayfair. The acquisition companies were not compliant.
  • Customer service has been exceptional, thanks to David West, our rep
  • Cert capture is easy to use and saves us time

We have historically used it for our online sales (Avatax) and cert capture for our B2B sales. We are currently using the state registration services and are seriously considering the return prep services. I like that it all can be done by one point of contact.

We use it to manage our item taxability, calculate taxes, and file returns across the US. We are also a partner of Avalara that recommends their products to our customers across North America. We implement their product along with the Avalara team and provide front-line support as needed. We coordinate with various departments throughout Avalara on a regular basis.
  • Rooftop-level tax calculation.
  • Partner programs.
  • Returns filing.
  • Item taxability management.
  • Implementation and support could use some updating with their recent expansion.
  • Pricing could be better suited for each customer.
  • More dedicated partner resources across different departments.
They can help with complex tax calculation, filing returns, managing exemption certificates, and much more around sales and other taxes. We have some complex scenarios with shipping and multiple parties involved for our customers, and Avalara can handle them well. Their connectors to 700 or so software packages make it easy to automate across multiple platforms and have one spot for all tax reporting.

Avalara is being used to capture our sales tax that we charge to our customers for our company. It also files some tax returns to various states monthly, quarterly and yearly on our behalf. We are also currently using the CertCapture modules for our customers for reselling purposes to make sure we monitor them wisely and timely.
  • Capture sales tax charges to taxable customers per sales/invoice.
  • File sales tax return periodically.
  • Maintains customer sellers certificate.
  • To be able to assist in Canadian tax return filing.
  • VDAs.
Tadano America Corporation has been using AvaTax for a while, so our historical data is there for us to go back and access in the situation where the company will be audited in the near future. Our company manufactures and distributes industrial lubricants in several states. We have 6 locations in 4 different states. Our sales and use tax process was tedious and time-consuming. Previously, we were manually updating sales tax rates in our ERP system and preparing our own returns, which involved lots of spreadsheets and took several days to file and complete. Avalara has improved our process with accurate tax rates and simplified our reporting process. It takes me less than 2 days to reconcile and approve all of our returns.
  • Avalara updates tax rates timely and accurately.
  • It will flag a transaction if you are using the incorrect exemption reason for various states.
  • The system breaks down the exact rates and amounts for each line item on the invoice.
  • Simplify the integration for certain ERP systems.
  • CertCapture often lags.
We sell to several gas patch and well site locations that don't have a physical address. Avalara is able to use the GPS coordinates for these locations to accurately calculate sales tax.

Tadano uses Avalara to calculate, remit sales tax, CertCapture, Voluntary Disclosure Agreements, and Historical Registration. We use Avalara in two different departments. The sales department manages CertCapture, while the accounting department manages all the other functions. Tax can be a very complicated topic. Avalara addresses the problem by having a one-stop shop for sale tax.
  • I have done a few voluntary disclosure agreements. Jamie Fox did a great job at helping us remit that tax.
  • Automatically remitting sales taxes to different governments.
  • Reporting and audits are now easier.
  • I personally have not had any issues with Avalara.

Avalara has become a saver of my time with tracking and filing sales and use tax, and managing exemption certificates. Having a large portion of customers exempt from tax, we needed the best way to not only track and manage our certificates, but also a way to reach out to our customers to collect their certificates. The CertCapture gives us a clear view of our certificates on file, and even when exposure is coming up with expiring certificates. The AvaTax side allows us to quickly reconcile and file our taxes on a timely basis. It also allows us to track exposure zones to make better decisions on when we need to start filing and remitting tax in a State or Jurisdiction.
  • Reports are easy to read and export for reconciliation with other systems.
  • Support teams are responsive and helpful.
  • CertCapture has made managing tax exemption certificates simple.
  • I have not experienced any Cons with Avalara at this time.
Avalara helps take some of the guesswork out of sales tax. With the ever-growing digital world, Avalara has helped us keep ahead of the changes that states are starting to put in place and the little nuances that can make our product taxable or not. The ability to have them file for me has taken the stress out of late returns.
