Act-On

Act-On is at the moment very much an SME platform, however it it moving in the right direction with its recent overhauls e.g. email and landing page creation, data studio and multiple lead scoring.

Pros

  • Behaviour Analysis. Anachron allows me to monitor all user behaviour on our websites, landing pages, emails webinars and other items. This knowledge, even the anonymous company data around who is on our sites and what they are doing is invaluable.
  • Email marketing and list management. Act-On's list management and email capabilities compare very favourably with some of the higher end automation tools I've used in the past. Although it has its quirks, it stands up strong against its biggest competitors in this regard.
  • Sales Support. The Act-On Anywhere Chrome Extension has rapidly become a must have item for our entire sales team. This recent addition to Act-On gives much greater insight into prospect behaviour to sales and most importantly enables the to get access to that information without having to log into another system, It's included right there in their emails and their web browser. The Act-On tab in Salesforce is also of great interest to our sales team.

  • Ease of reporting, conversation analysis, easy to build dashboards that give quick glimpses of the conversation/topic and allow you to drill down as needed.
  • Accurate sentiment driven triggered alerts let you keep your pulse on the conversation.
  • Topic setup is easy. Topics are easy to set up and advanced Boolean search functionality enables the use of wildcards to enhance topics.
  • Data access is outstanding. With 27 months of historical data built in and access to firehose data for social media platforms, data acquisition is second to none.

Cons

  • Program automation: the only feature I miss from Eloqua, which I used in a previous role, is the drag and drop canvas for building out a drip campaign. Act-On's functionality works perfectly, but the fact it's all listed in one vertical line makes it slightly more difficult to visualize the flow. Having said that, the tools are all there, it could just do with some extra visualization when it comes to making complex programs.
  • Website prospector. This is one of the features I use very heavily and although the new version recently launched is a big improvement, there's still room for more info. It's by no means bad, but I'd like to see some extra info in here.
  • Forms: Id like to see a more visual formbuilder, in line with the landing page improvements recently made. The form works great but are quite plain visually. This could be improved and remove the need for extra tools in WordPress/other programs.
Damian Leslie profile photo
  • I would love to see more visualization options to make client reporting easier and more robust.
  • I would like to see adoption of some basic social analytic tools that would allow me to make Netbase my go to for all social analytics.
  • More visual platform support.

The team there is incredibly helpful, jumping in on projects with us and always available to hop on the phone and help us. They're truly partners of ours. The tool itself is very robust. Even if we just use the simplest features, it's amazing to be able to report on the success of a campaign hashtag in under an hour, with analysis, under 10 minutes if not [less]

I'm 71 years old and have obsolete computer skills. I am not well versed in marketing/advertising, and would prefer not to be as involved in these areas as I am. With that background using Act-On has been easy to do and everything I've needed has been made available quickly. It's a very well designed "ask and ye shall receive" system.

NetBase constantly updates the platform with features. The platforms ability to analyze complex social listening topics is exceptional. Its fast and gives you the ability to create standardized reports for a quick topic analysis. Additionally, the standard overview tab provides the topic at a glance and assists in quickly identifying areas to further analyze. Great product with excellent support behind it!

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

We had an internal implementation meeting with the NetBase team as well as a business seat implementation for one of our clients. I would highly recommend having all stakeholders attend an implementation meeting as they can understand the power of this platform.

Alternatives Considered

I used Eloqua in my previous role and while it was a great tool I found it very cumbersome and difficult to work with. It's interface was old and it was actually quite a task to get many terms created, designed and aligned as I liked within that tool. Also, the costs for the platform were extremely high. Act-On was a real breath of fresh air for me. Its a much more intuitive interface, and much easier to work with. Although it may not have all of the bells and whistles that some of the bigger players have, it does a lot more than just the basics and gets them right as wel. It also has some cool little innovations of its own as well, the Act-On Anywhere tool is really interesting and valuable, not just to marketers but for sales staff as well. But overall, value for money is much greater with Act-On and that's a key concern for any business

I selected NetBase because it fit our objectives and budget at the time. However, Networked Insights has taxonomy of 15k classifiers:
  • Who (male female, age, where, emotions)
  • General interests (sports, fashion)
And you can segment your audience: moms, millennials, sports enthusiasts, home buyers - which helps build personas better than NetBase. It also goes through the system, compares data to the general public and can tell you what the audience cares about? i.e. which apps, music, how to create content that will resonate with them. Another difference: show instantly what causes spike in engagement - so you don’t have to tediously sift through posts to understand what caused the spike like in NetBase

Return on Investment

  • Average web audience grew 300% within three months, with visitors coming from over 100 countries.
  • Greater integration and cooperation between marketing and sales.
  • Enabled us to become much more proactive in lead generation that the company was able to do previously. We can monitor behaviour, react to that appropriately and serve our prospects and customers much more effectively.
Damian Leslie profile photo
  • More "bang for your buck" on client projects - we have often thrown in additional analysis run via NetBase to a primary research report to show due diligence and "wow" the client.
  • Improved client relations - by providing quick ad-hoc views of a certain topic we were able to ensure core clients are happy and continue to use us for primary research needs.
