I have used many payroll services and software. ADP Vantage is definitely the most advanced and intuitive product that I have used. We have a decentralized payroll, and it works great however I understand most clients do all the payroll at one location, so it suits either way. I not only recommend it for the exceptional product but also for the customer service that ADP provides.

This system is good for organizations that are decentralized with multiple points of employee sign-in/outs. Because it is Web based, employees can clock in on a computer, at their cubicle, on their phone or any other device that is not simply a time clock

Pros

ADP Vantage HCM

  • ADP Vantage is great because all the data is in one location, there is no exporting or importing employee data. For employees this is also a benefit as it's one place to go for everything they need, to record time, update tax withholding, setup direct deposit, update contact information etc.
  • I absolutely love the report writing, especially the new tools that ADP has introduced such as the "Field Grabber". It makes it so easy to create and run a quick report as needed. Even our least experienced users have commented how easy it has become to use reporting in ADP.
  • The New User Experience, (MyADP) although is new and not yet completely rolled, out will be a great benefit for employees and for managers who have 5 or less direct reports. The design is so user friendly where there are no instructions needed.
  • Its so easy to manage the user access, and make changes as you need it. The security gives you lots of flexibility. Just today I had a Practitioner who was going to take over the responsibility of a second location's payroll. To give her the correct access to the second location took less than 2 minutes to set up and apply to her profile.

Cons

ADP Vantage HCM

  • The product is sold as fully integrated but it is not. The Recruiting Management module isn't considered part of Vantage by the ADP team members. And, the look and feel of it is very different than the other modules. And, it is very difficult to use.
  • The Performance Management module is designed to support a very traditional approach to performance management and it is very rigid. It's very difficult to support more progressive ways of developing performance and keeping employees motivated.
  • The configuration/implementation was extremely painful. Implementation consultants vary wildly on their knowledge of their own modules and almost none of them understand how what is built in their module might impact configuration in other modules.
  • Five months post go-live we continue to have significant issues. Many of which seem to arise when updates are made by ADP.

  • The organizational structure of Ascentis and segregated nature of the system and system support can be confusing. For example, if I need assistance with onboarding an employee it is not often clear who I should contact for assistance. The company seems to be divided by Ascentis HR, Ascentis Payroll, Ascentis TimeKeeping, and Ascentis Recruiting, It would be nice to have one point of contact for customer support for the entire Ascentis system rather than having multiple points of contact that are often changing.
  • I attending the Ascentis User Conference in 2013 during which we were told that Ascentis HR would be transitioning to a new platform in early 2014. Since that conference, I have received no communication from Ascentis as to the status of the transition and we are still on the Remote Desktop platform.
  • During the User Conference 2013 there was no one from Ascentis that was familiar with the Onboarding side of Ascentis. I got the impression that we were one of very few customers utilizing the onboarding feature and the Ascentis staff was not aware of the features and were unable to answer any questions. In fact, I felt like I was answering their questions rather than them answering mine.
  • Would love to see the system be more flexible for international use. The system does not allow international contact information to be entered and does not allow for selection of any country locations other than US and Canada. We have had to work around these limitations.
  • The Attendance tracking is somewhat limited in that it does not allow for a policy which awards PTO in lump sums at multiple intervals throughout the year. It allows a policy where a flat amount is awarded once a year or where the PTO is accrued on a regular basis only.

The overall ease of access and flow of information made my life so much better that when I lost most of my support staff due to retraction in the industry and hiring, I was able to continue to support the 300 employees on my own. Also, when I provided training to the benefit broker, he was very impressed and able to understand the functions quickly.

First, to clarify our "in-person" training was done mainly through Web-X meetings and conference calls. It was the closest thing we got to as far as an "in-person" training for this software. However, for the large majority of it, this type of training worked out well. We were able to share our screens and the trainer was able to share his/her screen. We could follow along with what we were doing in our database in real time and see how different functions worked and how manipulating our information could produce different results. It was also nice in that it provided for real-time results if something hadn't been coded correctly or we were having issues as to why something wasn't working the way we thought it should be. However, it did have some downsides in that we often had to rely on a conference phone and that made it difficult to hear people on both sides. Also, sometimes the trainers had internet difficulties when working from home and that caused issues with the WebX meetings.

A lot of set ups vary from company to company so parts of our training we found it difficult to relate it to our processes. They have TONS of training modules available and a streamlined process for what you should complete and when. Would have been helpful to have onsite training for how much one pays for the system.

Ascentis HR has a number of online training videos to watch on a number of different topics. I gave it a lower rating because there is not much interactivity with the videos and it seems to cater to really only one or two learning styles. Plus, one has to be pretty motivated to go to a separate area to access the videos and then pull up a specific one to watch it and then learn. From my experience, people know that they are there, many just don't take the time and effort to go find them and actually watch them - especially since the username and password are different from their normal username and password.

It was very easy to implement, but the customization pieces should really be fleshed out in order to determine the full need of an organization at the time of implementation. I believe if a little more time was spent on the requirements, the recruiting module would not have to be customized again at a cost at a later date.

Our organization chose ADP Vantage HCM in order to eliminate the on premises solution of PeopleSoft as well as to outsource payroll processing. The cloud based, fully integrated solutions that the Vantage product line offers allows us to have a true "one-stop shop" for all our HR systems.

Ascentis beats them all. I've also worked with several smaller systems for small companies, and Ascentis has the best support and reporting functionality that I've seen thus far. Any system you pick will have its pros and cons, but being able to get a hold of support and get an answer to your issue is worth its weight in gold.

  • The positive impact is that because the company has grown at astronomical rates, Ascentis Payroll prints our checks, pays our State and Federal Taxes, sends out our garnishments and it eliminates the hours we spend doing it ourselves.
