What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

Basecamp is used by our non-profit organization to organize monthly and long term projects.
  • Messaging groups of people with project updates
  • Many means of access- through mobile and desktop applications
  • Easy to use
  • It's so easy for one project to turn into a jumble of many smaller pieces
  • No hierarchy for projects
  • No timeline. It's hard to keep timelines of project components clear
Basecamp is suited to individual small tasks to collaborate with others. It is a free tool and that can make it an excellent gateway into the world of project management tools. I recommend it as an option for people just starting out.

  • Basecamp has been a great place to work on monthly projects where the team members change over time.
  • The archive feature is great and gives access to years of our projects all in one system.
  • The free features are really wonderful for people just wanting to try it out, or for projects with no budget.
Basecamp is more entry level and has a much easier set up than most of the competitors. I greatly prefer Trello, but when I am working with new marketers they always suggest Basecamp. Basecamp is good, but it is just so easy to get the multiple pieces of a project jumbled together into one conversational thread.
No
  • Prior Experience with the Product
Colleagues choose basecamp because it is the only one they are used to and they don't know there are other options available.
  • Starting a project and inviting people to join is a very smooth and easy process
  • The mobile and desktop versions make the project easy to access
  • The email digest feature works very well.
  • It is very difficult to keep the individual elements of a project organized. Inevitably three or more items of creative are discussed in the same message thread and approvals and files get mixed up.
Yes, but I don't use it
Basecamp is ok, but I don't quite understand why people like it so much. There are other free tools that work as well or better. It is always colleagues who have recently finished college who are so set to using basecamp, so perhaps it is the one they have used in school? I wonder because it is suited to one clear project, not a project with multiple pieces. Trying to manage an event that has web ads, social ads, a postcard, and a landing page is really not well suited to Basecamp, at least the way we were using it.

This platform is a great organizational tool that helps you create and assign projects within a range of coworkers. You choose who to include in a task or assignment. We use it mainly for projects to keep an organized way of working during the time of execution. This tool is used all along the company, sometimes it's spread through 5 or more departments, and it surely helps keep and track each assignment to be delivered on time.
  • It organizes task in a project, by assigning a task to people involved
  • Very simple and easy to use, no extended training is needed if you have basic computer skills
  • It tracks dates, tasks and future assignments by reminding the person involved to complete or work on a task
  • A great feature that helps a lot is the instant messaging
  • Notifications are repetitive even when a task has been completed
  • You cannot create an additional task to a sub task in a project
  • Design might be a little updated in the area of the dashboard, could be more interactive
Basecamp becomes very useful whenever you have a project that will include a lot of personnel; it keeps an organized structure, keeping errors on a low scale. On the other hand, if it's a small project or for personal use, this platform could be a waste of money or not useful at all. There could be other platforms better for personal organization.

  • For a business, its great for the value, $99 a month with everything included, its worth it
  • It keeps from hiring additional human resource for tracking and organization
  • It increases productivity and delivery times and projects are more precise
Haven't tried any other software or platform other than Basecamp, but before the purchase process we reviewed other products and they seem very similar and the decision that got us to buy Basecamp was because of the price and the understanding of the web page related to the features that Basecamp came with.

Most important factors for purchase were price and how well will the user experience the platform. These are two important aspects which helped us to save some money and helped us save some time on going through long and extensive training. In the end, it worked pretty well.
Something that we evaluated was the performance or reviews from the platform, but something that would've been great to have was a trial with an internal tutorial. The platform is a great platform overall, but this aspect was important to not risk our purchase process, it did great when we used it.

  • Keeps large teams on track for project completion.
  • Love that you can schedule recurring projects in advance and assign all the tasks out - turns us into a well-oiled machine.
  • Linking tasks! I would love it if you could move one task and it would ripple to all the following ones.
  • Went from 200k emails a month to about 3MM.
Easy to use and train people on. Can incorporate external vendors into projects.
  • Tracks projects, timelines, and assignments.
Jira.
Looked at
  • Microsoft Project - too cumbersome for our agile projects.
  • Liquid Planner - too costly.
  • Tom's Planner - just a scheduling program and difficult to update.
  • Implemented in-house
Decide the process before implementation - i.e. when it's due 8/9 does that mean 8am, noon, 5pm, 11:59pm?
Check your to-do list frequently
Set-up templates - just not with the dates (they can be funky)
  • Self-taught
It was easy to learn. I do think there should be some best practices implemented before you switch to this platform.
No
Don't think it's an option.

  • This product makes it very easy to share and comment on files, images, etc.
  • Because of the layout of the interface, it really helps enhance the initial brainstorming and design processes.
  • Because it is hosted online, it is easy to quickly access the system in case we need to quick reference a project in meetings and presentations.
  • The interface is a little bit hard to navigate for newer users sometimes. It helps if you clearly label and name your projects so it is easier to locate them later.
  • We are simplifying our submission process to the development team, which definitely makes them happier as they can spend more of their time focusing on project tasks.
This software has been very helpful in the project management on our team.
The format of this software is less formal and more fun, which definitely fits our laid-back team atmosphere better.
  • We use this software to help manage our mock/design process, as well as lay out the projects before we write product specifications and submit them to the development team to build.
We added this product to supplement our current project management software.
It was affordable and we were able to use a free version before committing to paying for the software.
  • Implemented in-house
We were able to get our projects up and running very quickly on this software.
  • Self-taught
This product is extremely easy to learn very quickly.
I've never had to use customer support. The software is intuitive enough that it is very easy to pick up and learn immediately.
