Zoom

Honestly, Zoom is such an improvement over our previous provider's service, no one has complained. I don't have any idea where its use would be inappropriate or inadequate. Zoom serves us very well. We're extremely happy with the service, support, and pricing. We have more than 100 users and a record of no complaints is significant.

Skype

Skype is very well suited to teams working remotely. We use this as our primary chat and video conference call service and have not regretted it. It might be less appropriate in a setting where your team is in cubicles. Though even there you can use the chat feature to get a quick question answered with coworkers or to discretely message someone.

Pros

  • The most important strength we have identified with Zoom is its reliability. In 2016 our teams were using either Zoom or another well-known video conferencing service but little by little Zoom became the preferred option. It was almost natural selection, where the most reliable service survived. The audio and video have little or no problems, no lost connections, audio echoes, robot voice, frozen video, etc.
  • Zoom has one great advantage over its close competitor and it's the ease of use. The other service became too complicated as there were a lot of compatibility problems with their business and personal versions installed in the computers. Zoom works smoothly regardless of the version that every member of the meeting is running. You can run the browser version or the desktop app without any complications.
  • The meeting ID number is very helpful to organize meetings. Sometimes this feature is overlooked, but it is crucial to have perfectly clear what meeting you are attending. It's like having your own meeting room with the door closed, instead of having a conversation in the middle of the lunchroom in an open space.
  • Screen sharing in Zoom also runs smoothly. It is very convenient that you still have the small windows with the live video of the participants, while most of your display is showing the screen that is being shared.
  • Audio detection is a nice feature that promotes focus. Whenever one member of the meeting starts talking, the main window shows his/her video so you don't have to be guessing who is talking and saves you those fractions of a second where your brain is trying to match the audio with one of the many thumbnails showing the video of the participants. In conversations or discussions, this makes a big difference.

  • Immediate response using the messenger feature. There is no lag and you are notified when people are even in the process of responding back.
  • The interface is easy to manuever and get around. You can easily find what you are needing.
  • The capability to turn different features off and on for multiple uses is great. You can turn off video but still have audio.

Cons

  • The interface is not that intuitive. Even for frequent users, it is common to go through some trial and error to do what you want to do, no matter what you did exactly the same last week. For example sharing your screen, muting your audio, etc.
  • Time management is not embedded in the interface, or at least it's not obvious. When running a limited time meeting it is annoying to get cut off all of a sudden because nobody noticed that the time was running out. It would be very helpful to have a warning clock during the last minutes of the conference.
  • Creating meeting IDs in advance is possible but is not that easy. You need to know your way in the application to find the way to schedule a meeting ID. I would like to see a simple button to do it easily.

  • Sometimes it is difficult to hear, there is an echo if the computer is used forcing to reconnect frequently to improve quality.
  • It would be nice if everybody utilized the tool. We still have several pockets of people that don't like the technology or that don't want to be interrupted or bothered with an instant message, they see it as annoying. I think it people realized the benefits, they would use it and when they can't respond, they simply don't - it is their decision! I think more knowledge is necessary to take this on as an organization.
  • I wish there was a way to clear the 'missed' conversations - maybe there is and I just don't know how to use it?
  • I have been recording several of my working sessions with the consultant and have found it takes a while to publish? Also, many people don't know this functionality exists so the more training on the tool, the better!

Likelihood to Renew

Based on 9 answers
Because every other conference tool is expensive, bloated, or fails to make it easy to just have a call with someone.

I think so far there is no reason not to renew the license. We have been using Skype for a long time and are very satisfied with it.

Usability

Zoom9.1
Based on 8 answers
Everything is easy to understand and use, new users need no training. On the flipside there are minor annoyances such as calendar export being cumbersome (need re-auth every time) and also not having recordings shared within a team or forcing people to name them.

There have been less than a handful of outages during our two years with Zoom, and whenever there was one, an email informing us of the outage went out immediately, and they had the issue resolved shortly thereafter.

Performance

Zoom10.0
Based on 1 answer
Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

Alternatives Considered

Zoom is simple, streamlined, and easy to access for me and my clients. Zoom is NOT a website based application which means it has a cleaner look and I think the functionality is much smoother and user-friendly. When I have tried other systems there's always too many instructions, logging in to calls is confusing, or you have to make sure you've found your contacts correctly before beginning

Skype is probably the most efficient in terms of connectivity and it is least affected by the bandwidth fluctuations if you compare it with WebEx. But I would prefer WebEx if I was buying an individual license. Since I am storing with a huge number of people Skype made more sense to integrate. This if why I opted for Skype. It also gives you features like screen share and control transfer which is missing in WebEx. All the more reason to go for Skype.

Scalability

Zoom10.0
Based on 1 answer
Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.

Return on Investment

  • Zoom has had a positive impact on my business. For me, there is nothing else like it for what I require. It's easy to use and dependable. Clients truly appreciate having visual contact with me and I find that Zoom is great for relationship building.

  • Being able to instantly chat with a colleague had helped us be able to respond to customer questions with speed.
  • Without having to maintain an infrastructure, our consultants can focus more on customer solutions.
  • Prevents the need for any capital investments in infrastructure or other services to meed our needs.
