Zoom

Zoom has, in my experience, performed well in multiple contexts ranging from personal use to large-scale business meetings. Its user-friendliness and quick setup make it ideal even for one-off calls between friends or colleagues; and its robust feature set (especially at the pro+ levels), capacity to facilitate many participants and recording functionality all make it a powerful tool at the corporate level. I cannot think of any scenarios where Zoom wouldn't be a great fit.

Skype

Skype is a great option for holding collaborative meetings when participants cannot meet in person. Skype allows users to create meetings with several people, which is useful. Because Skype is free and easy to install on various types of operating systems, it is a great choice for individuals or companies who need decent meeting software but also have budget constraints. Skype is also a good general choice for meeting software, because it can be used to call friends or family but is also a good choice for professional / workplace meetings. However, Skype will not work very well in areas without high speed internet.

Pros

  • Zoom makes staff meetings with our remote staff so much easier to manage. The software is intelligent and automatically switches the main video feed to the active speaker, meaning you're naturally looking at the person talking without having to do anything with your settings. In addition, it shows smaller boxes of every active user in the meeting, so you can still take in everyone's reactions to the speaker. Having that ability to have non-verbal feedback is great when you're the one presenting the information, and you can easily make adjustments to your presentation. It makes it feel like you're all in the same room even if you can't be.
  • The screen share feature for Zoom is incredible. Even for users who have never used the software before, Zoom is just user friendly, it's a one-click action, and then you're sharing! It's also easy to switch back and forth, which is great when you're training someone and you want to watch them in action to ensure they understand the material.
  • Sometimes during meetings a staff member may have questions but it's difficult to interject yourself into the conversation. One way Zoom overcomes this is with a chat window with pop-up notifications when someone makes a comment. This is particularly helpful to the presenter, so that they know there's a question that needs to be addressed.

  • It does video calling very well.
  • You can share files easily over the platform.
  • The chat / instant messaging feature was robust.
  • It's very accessible. Users on many platforms can use it.
  • It is reliable. I have not had issues with uptime or charshing.

Cons

  • The only thing we dislike about zoom is the User Interface. It looks really ugly. Doesn't look like a modern digital product. They could really use some help in designing a new user interface and a new look and feel. Their UX is actually fine. Is the UI the one that we don't like.

  • Room for improvement: roll back to what it was before Microsoft acquisition.
  • Remove the forced Microsoft login. Make the "remember me" option available again so it won't sign me out every single time and force me to get a Microsoft account.
  • Bring back screenshot options.
  • I'm having a hard time finding 3 things it does well. It used to do many things quite well, but not since it's been bought out by Microsoft. It's now a disaster.

Performance

Zoom10.0

Zoom has among the best performance of any video conference platform, as I've mentioned several times. Besides that, their Chat platform works great, and their back end always runs smooth. It's unfortunate that reporting can now only be done by one month at a time, but nonetheless, it only takes a second to run any kind of Zoom report, whether it's an attendee report, Poll results, a user report, a list of meetings from the past month, etc.

Support

Zoom8.5
Based on 7 answers
Zoom's support is truly world class. And I'm not sure if that's because my company was an early adopter, but nonetheless, they're very helpful. If we encounter some kind of bug (a rare event), it's not long before the engineering team gets back to me with a fix. If I want to submit a feature request, a rep gets back to me instantly saying that it's now on their scope (and then it gets added to the product shortly after). If I have a question about some feature, Zoom support always has a speedy answer. They're very good at giving detailed release notes any time there's an update, and their documentation is always great.

If you receive any pushback from higher ups, point to any of the various positive reviews like this one. Or show Zoom's excellent Gartner report, or articles describing Zoom's partnership with Sequoia capital. It's not difficult to show how Zoom is a trustworthy industry leader with best-in-class technology.

Alternatives Considered

Zoom is SO much better than the other web conference options out there. We selected Zoom because we tested it, and all of our employees absolutely loved it. It was so easy to convince our IT Team to switch over to Zoom. It meant fewer issues for them to fix

I think Zoom is more suited for a company, whereas Skype is more for personal use. Zoom has the meeting capabilities that are more geared toward company usage compared to Skype

Scalability

Zoom10.0
Based on 1 answer
Because the Basic licenses are completely free, and because it's very easy to configure and install Zoom, and because anyone can join Zoom from a link without needing an account, scaling is a Breeze. There are absolutely no roadblocks. My company keeps adding more Zoom Pro license every week since it's so in demand. We were able to convert users from several different platforms onto Zoom with no trouble at all.

Return on Investment

  • We were able to standardize zoom as our only call/video conference tool. Before zoom everyone had a personal favorite. With Zoom nobody argues anymore about which one is better. This is the one.
  • We do video calls every single day with existing clients. Before Zoom this was a huge pain for us and it affected the delivery of our service. Zoom today is preponderant to the quality of our service.
  • Zoom has always given good impression to our clients (to the ones that didn't know it before). Because of Zoom, we have managed to actually remove the pain of conference call with clients. "I can't hear you" "is breaking up" "I can't connect" ... those are things I haven't heard in a while.

  • It has had a positive impact mainly since I started using it. It has been easier to maintain direct contact with members and clients over the years, I also liked the integration they have with Hotmail, that also allowed me to add my contacts mail without problem.
  • It also seems positive because it has allowed other contacts (future members or client) to contact me, without having them added to my community, allowing the expansion of my area.
  • If I could talk about something negative, it would be that broadband does not work well in all countries, but not if it is attributed to the program or directly to the company that provides the internet.
