It was originally developed as an open-source eCommerce content management solution by Varien, Inc. Varien was acquired by eBay in 2012. Magento Open Source (formerly Community Edition) is still available for developers and tech-savvy merchants. Adobe also offers small business and mid-enterprise level solutions that offer cloud services and integrations for business intelligence and order management tools.
Visitor data is used to segment customers and personalize the shopping experience with targeted promotions, suggestions and coupons. Sites generate SEO-friendly URLs, a Google site map, and customized meta tags to help products get discovered. Site-wide or segmented and targeted recommendations are generated from rule-based product-relations logic, to increase up-sells and cross-sells, and interactive features including "likes" and tweets allow visitors to broadcast their choices and create buzz around products.

One of the best solutions for stable ecommerce
- We could reduce the number of services we had, using almost a single platform for doing everything we need (except printing labels for shipping and high level accountancy).
- It results in a cheaper management, but we increment the hours of development for custom features.

Magento: Your best option for an e-commerce platform
- Inventory Management is OK but not great. Each Magento upgrade tinkers with the settings.
- Having unreliable product information due to complicated uploading systems.
- In regards to brand perception, resources, and sampling, we saw major success.

- Our business objective was to bring our products to our customers through online shopping experience. Magento does just that. It is perfect for the task. We were able to reach our goals within the first year. Our customers enjoy the look and feel and easy of use of our site.
- The great thing is, if Magento does not offer something you need out of the box, there are a number of extensions that are easily installed. With them you are able to follow up with your customers to ensure a continuous relationship.

Magento Enterprise - Enterprise Class, Affordable Price Point
- For Clients who can dedicate the proper resources (which, in the grand scheme of things is really just one trained FTE depending on implementation), we've seen some pretty substantial impact. From incredibly high increases to sales (upwards of 100%) to multi-site and incredibly complex implementations making up investment dollars in months.
- For Clients who CAN NOT or DO NOT dedicate the proper resources we've seen sites fall to shambles, become money pits, and end up more error-ridden than feature rich. Without the proper oversight and management, like unstained system, a Magento implementation can fall to pieces very quickly.

- With almost a hundred deployments we have seen sales increased up to 40% compared to the previous platform
- Since Magento is open source and backed by eBay, it is possible to extend it and maintain it easily
- Magento is scalable and runs on standard server hardware without difficulty. Obviously this is no Wordpress site so a beefier setup is required.
- We have deployed projects with 500k SKUs and different websites with success
