We are excited to announce the Top Rated Database-as-a-Service (DBaaS) for 2019! Top Rated awards showcase today’s top-of-the-line products in DBaaS based solely on positive user feedback and satisfaction scores. These awards make the voice of the market the primary decider into the industry’s best products.

Amazon DynamoDB

Amazon DynamoDB is a NoSQL database from Amazon Web Services (AWS). It supports both key-value and document-based data models, allowing customers to adapt their database to changing business needs. An automated replication system allows global applications to access data locally, reducing read and write times. DynamoDB also automatically optimizes performance and scales storage as-needed.  A large portion (42%) of DynamoDB users on TrustRadius are from small businesses. DynamoDB’s reliability, integration with other AWS products, and low maintenance make it popular with reviewers.

Amazon RDS

Amazon RDS is AWS’s SQL database solution. Customers can choose from multiple database engines, including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Amazon Aurora. It’s designed to be easily scalable with little to no downtime. The service also offers automated backups, database snapshots, and data encryption. Monitoring dashboards and event notifications help keep administrators apprised of their database’s performance and condition. Users from small businesses make up a large portion (41%) of Amazon RDS users on TrustRadius. Its reviewers appreciate its high availability, comprehensive security and compliance options, and easy backup and restoration.

What is DBaaS?

Fast, reliable databases are critical tools for many businesses. However, databases come with operational costs: hardware, software, expertise, maintenance time, and electricity. For some organizations, it makes more sense to purchase access to databases owned and operated by a third-party DBaaS vendor.

DBaaS offerings include both relational databases and NoSQL databases. The vendor is responsible for maintaining, upgrading, and administering the database. Customers purchase access to the database servers, specifying the amount of storage, memory, and processing capability they need. Vendors often charge based on the actual resources a customer uses. The vendor often offers additional service features, such as data backup, data security, and database replication. Some vendors also include analytics tools with their service.

Buyers considering DBaaS solutions should understand their available resources and customization needs. DBaaS is often attractive for smaller businesses with fewer IT resources and less space for hardware. However, a database service is less configurable by nature than an in-house solution. Businesses that need complete control over their database for performance or privacy reasons may need to spend the time and resources to implement an on-premise database solution.

Top Rated Criteria

Products included in the 2019 Top Rated DBaaS list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap as of August 1st, 2019. To qualify for the DBaaS Top Rated Award, products must have at least 10 reviews written within the past year, a TRScore of at least 7.5 out of 10, and must receive at least 1.5% of the traffic in their category.  Every reviewer is verified and every review is vetted before publication. Products are plotted on the TrustMap based on end-user data, including users’ likelihood to recommend scores as well as buyer research patterns.
