I think it's a great platform to get started with, it's easy to manage things by yourself and you therefore can decrease your dependence on an (expensive) third party. For us who have an IT department in house as well as a content team it's been working great to be able to manage the majority of the setup on our own, However, don't hesitate to use additional services since this can really give you a boost forward.

Mautic Marketing Automation

Mautic is particularly well suited for smaller companies who need a full-featured marketing automation suite at a reasonable cost. Commercial options are prohibitively expensive for small companies and agencies. Mautic takes a little work to get up and running, but once you have it configured, you're good to go.If you need the support or onboarding training that a commercial platform provides, Mautic may not be the best choice.

Pros

  • Webinar Creation-This is synced up with our Saleforce and WebEx tools for a smooth seamless event from start to finish. Getting our message through but also keeping our CRM up to date with the interaction.
  • Send Over Time- I cannot preach enough about how effective this feature is for getting messaging through. You are able to select specific time blocks that you would like your blast to drip out. This allows them to less likely be marked as spam because they trickle out.
  • Automation-Some of the best drip marketing features I have ever seen! Automation allows for multiple lists and segments with an endless group of messages. One of the best ways to save you and your team time and allow the customers to raise their hands for help.
  • Support-Their support staff is amazing! You never have to talk to someone you cannot understand or that is not personable. They are always ready and eager to help in anyway they can. Their ability to escalate and get answers the same day is very impressive.

Cons

  • Website Prospector. I've used other tools that are far more sophisticated in matching visitors with companies (instead of ISPs, which Prospector does more often than not) and in preserving a visitor's identity throughout their entire process (such as, linking an identity to an anonymous user once that user is identified via a form). I think it is probably heading in the right direction but at this point I think it's the feature that needs the most attention.
  • E-mail Templates. Templates are created through stationery, which while it would be very easy to use for a company sending out multiple identically-designed e-mails, is a bit cumbersome for more design-focused HTML e-mails. I'd love more flexibility with HTML and WYSIWYG HTML editing.

There is no other provider in the segment that does what they do at the price they charge, and their support team is great. My contact often checks in with me, and I think that they have really taken a stake in making sure that my company and my business succeeds. I often think of them as friends vs. business collaborators.

It's good, but not quite brilliant. Some parts of the interface are still a bit outdated. The product has been evolving very fast, though, and I believe in a few months it will be up there with the best of them, interface wise as well.

I had a question about tracking our emails in CRM. I sent a few and then noticed they were not in the history. We have to keep everything centralized in that system and I was scared I wouldn't be able to leverage Act-On the way I wanted to. I sent in a support ticket, received the first response within 20 minutes, and had my answer within the hour!

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

Compared to SharpSpring, Act-On has it's act together. SharpSpring is obviously a value tool in comparison. Our major issue with SharpSpring was Salesforce integration; we constantly had issues with leads being re-uploaded, data changing or not changing when it was supposed to, or many other syncing issues that caused many headaches and a lot of clean-up time. I did prefer SharpSpring's anonymous visitor tracking and e-mail creation, but it simply wasn't worth the discounted price to deal with the headaches. The ease of setting up automation and integrating it with Salesforce made Act-On 100% worth the upgrade, and I wish we hadn't spent a few months trying to make something else work for us.

Mautic's competitive advantage is cost. Other solutions can be prohibitively expensive, and some other marketing automation solutions I had used required costly up-front investment for onboarding. I chose Mautic because I had grown weary of the aggressive sales tactics and unreasonable pricing of competitors' offerings for small businesses and agencies.
