What is SolarWinds Dameware Remote Support (DRS)?

Dameware Remote Support is a systems administration tool that helps IT admins and support teams provide remote support to end-users. This tool enables users to initiate remote connections with multiple computers at the same time and provide support with the help of the built-in administration tools and utilities. Users can also remotely connect to Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X systems—all from a single, central Dameware console. The vendor says the solution is trusted by over 70,000 organizations worldwide and that Dameware was the first remote support software to introduce Smart Card authentication for remote connectivity.With the help of a secure internet proxy, Dameware lets users connect to their end-users and customers across the globe—whether they are situated inside or outside their corporate network. The Dameware Mobile Gateway functionality lets IT pros provide on-call and after-hours support by launching remote sessions from iOS and Android devices.

DameWare is leaps and bounds more robust in the support aspects of any of the similar products that we reviewed. I am sure that we will be finding new tricks and features for years to come. It is a great product with more than adequate features for a company of our size or larger.

We selected Dameware based off of recommendations from other school districts; a recommendation from an employee who used it at another company, and after considering other options such as TeamViewer. For the cost, we thought it offered us the most bang for our buck as it included the Active Directory stuff which we are going to [use] along with great Remote Desktop support.

DameWare us a more user friendly remotely initiated support tool than others I have worked with. Several members of the team I was working with were pre-disposed to Solarwinds products due to past experience with their offerings. The decision was made easier due to a much lower learning curve and willing staff members. It had much less to do with system capability and more to do with a need to quickly address a broken support process.

There are latency issues with RealVNC that are not there with DameWare Remote Support and GoToAssist requires user interaction. Neither has the Active Directory tie-in or the management consoles to monitor all aspects of computers.

I have tried TeamViewer, but it does not have all the functionality of DameWare Remote Support. There are much more features packed into this product compared to TeamViewer. I choose DameWare Remote Support because I used it for 7 years at my previous place and it served me well. I will continue to use it as it's an invaluable tool.

Windows Remote Desktop allows remote access but does not allow for an interactive session where both support staff and customer view the same desktop. DameWare Remote Support allows both to view all the work as it is done. RealVNC was initially used to manage a few servers and tested for use on client systems but the screen refresh was determined to be too slow for customer support. It was replaced by DameWare Remote Support which has been used since that time.

Bomgar seems to have similar feature sets and abilities as DameWare, but was a little too pricey when we were looking. DameWare absolutely blows traditional RDP out of the water.
