What is ScienceLogic SL1?

The ScienceLogic SL1 platform aims to enable companies to digitally transform themselves by removing the difficulty of managing complex, distributed IT services. SL1 uses patented discovery techniques to find everything in a network, so users get visibility across all technologies and vendors running anywhere in data centers or clouds. The vendor states the advantage of SL1 is that it collects and analyzes millions of data points across an IT universe (made up of infrastructure, network, applications, and business services), to help users make sense of it all, share data, and automate IT processes.

With SL1, the user can:

  • See everything across cloud and distributed architectures. Discover all IT components—–across physical, virtual, and cloud. Collect, merge, and store a variety of data in a clean, normalized data lake.
  • Contextualize data through relationship mapping and machine learning (ML) for actionable insights. Use this context to understand the impact of infrastructure and applications on business service health and risk, accelerate root cause analysis, and execute recommended actions.
  • Act on data that is shared across technologies and IT ecosystem in real time. Apply multi-directional integrations to automate workflows at cloud scale.

Companies can't remove reviews or game the system. Here's why

EMC Smarts. We wanted to be able to set individual thresholds for each drive within the same device. Also, needed to shut off some drives/mounts from monitoring so that unimportant alerts do not keep the sys admins awake at 2 am in the morning. Single pane of glass for the overall health of the systems and reporting ease were all factors.

It was an older product that we actually purchased the IP for and developed on our own for a while called WildMetrix.

It wasn't scalable, and the code was old and had to be updated. It would've been a monumental effort to do so, and we would not have been able to do it quick enough to support the business.

A legacy Nagios deployment monitoring 25000+ services was replaced by SL1. This allowed us to not only leverage the existing agents without need for redeployment, but also to collect more data than we thought possible. With this data we are able to populate a full CMDB, as well as monitor trending issues and decrease the time needed to troubleshoot issues.

When we started this journey we had 16 tools. Each served a purpose for a siloed view of the needed user but none fed into our ServiceNow tool to alert the entity as a whole to help us learn and change manage successfully. This has been a transitional accountability journey to be sure.

The company merged with other company's and of the other companies EM7/SL1 was the winning monitoring system. The other company's brought Nagios, cacti, PRTG, mrtg, Zabbix, hobbit, and traverse. All of those systems could not hold a candle to what EM7/SL1 could do as easily.
