What is SolarWinds NPM?

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (NPM) delivers comprehensive network fault monitoring and performance management that scales and expands with a company's network monitoring needs. Users can collect and view availability, real-time and historical statistics from routers, switches, firewalls, servers, and any other SNMP-, ICMP-, or WMI-enabled devices directly from a web browser.

The vendor states that SolarWinds users can get a full NPM installation up and running the same day they download, and that implementation does not require a team of consultants. NPM provides visibility into the health of network devices and servers on the network, ensuring that users have needed real-time information to keep their network running at peak performance.

Network Performance Monitor helps IT Pros:

  • Detect, diagnose, and resolve network performance issues and avoid downtime
  • Respond to multiple condition checks, correlated events, and device dependencies
  • Automatically calculate capacity exhaustion dates using customizable thresholds based on peak and average usage
  • Streamline network troubleshooting with a Web interface
  • View paths to critical business services hop-by-hop, even into the cloud, with the NetPath™ feature
  • Get deeper visibility into complex network devices with Network Insight™ features for Cisco ASA firewalls, Cisco Nexus switches, and F5 BIG-IP load balancers

Users recommend considering the whole stack of Network Modules on the SolarWinds platform instead of NPM as a standalone product. They believe the other modules are valuable additions for monitoring, managing, and analyzing the network. SolarWinds NPM is considered the best network performance monitoring solution on the market. Users suggest using it for network monitoring and exploring other modules for specific infrastructure monitoring. While NPM is a good tool for network monitoring, users advise looking into alternative options for advanced monitoring needs. Some users suggest improving the navigation to make it more fluid and user-friendly. Overall, users recommend SolarWinds NPM for managing and monitoring network infrastructures due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness. They also recommend trying the live action feature and Meraki for enhanced network analytics. Users suggest considering other products with better UI and capabilities. SolarWinds NPM is worth the price if affordable, especially with sponsorship. Working with third-party services or SolarWinds to properly set up the tool is recommended. Using multiple tools in conjunction with NPM provides more visibility. Users recommend signing up for Thwack and utilizing their resources for assistance with SolarWinds products. Trying the demo first before purchasing is advisable. NPM is considered a core module in every company that chooses SolarWinds as their monitoring tool. SolarWinds is an old, outdated codebase. It is sluggish and difficult to work with for the most part. It is very easy to set up initially and maintain if you have a small or simple network. I would recommend a combination of ELK stack and a time series metric recorder instead.

These open-source versions simply lacked the polish and out-of-the-box set-up that SolarWinds provides. Both alternatives required managing more than one server and required deeper Linux experience and third party add-ons that could introduce security vulnerabilities, a trade-off we experimented with but decided against in the end.

NPM offers many more features and options, and goes much deeper. WhatsUp Gold is good if want to keep things simpler, but as our needs grew more complex it couldn't match the features and options of NPM.

We've had a few different offers for competitors, but we've turned them down as SolarWinds meets all of our needs and more. No reason to change a good thing! If there was ever something else we needed from SolarWinds I would reach out to them and they would always have it implemented somewhere, just maybe a spot I haven't been to, or a tool we might not have.

SolarWinds was very competitive from a function and feature standpoint, but was the most cost effective solution. Support has been great and the Solarwinds team has always been available for any questions that we have.

SolarWinds NPM is a good entry tool for smaller companies as it provides you a decent baseline to monitor your network. To unlock the full potential you need to add agents and it falls pretty quick. It is not as good as enterprise tools like ExtraHop. Also it is not as easy to setup as tools like ThousandEyes

You need a basic understanding of networking of course, but it is very easy to set up, clustering, HA, very well organized GUI. As opposed to the other guys, they are complex and GUIs are clunky.

We used to have Intermapper monitoring our network. SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor has so many more functions that help us keep tabs on our environment. On top of that, we are able to monitor our wireless environment, which we were not able to do with Intermapper. It has really made it easier for our daily work.

The only other product I am familiar with is Zabbix. Although Zabbix is powerful it has a much higher learning curve and implementation is a bit more difficult. There are options to have a vendor create and setup a solution for you, or learn how to customize everything yourself. Because SolarWinds is ready to go after installation, it is easier to get up and running and performs just as well.

WUG doesn't perform well in multi-tenant environments, and the SolarWinds Sales Engineer promised that NPM was multi-tenant capable (not a lie, but not entirely accurate, either).

We have not used any other products, as once we tried SolarWinds we stuck to it and thoroughly enjoy using it. We believe that if something works, don't fix it; however, SolarWinds improves itself overtime, so this is definitely the end game. We are extremely happy and will continue to stay a customer.

We run SolarWinds NPM, Cisco Prime and VMWare vRealize Ops Manager for monitoring solutions. NPM and Cisco Prime are the only ones that monitor our network infrastructure. Cisco Prime has multiple configs whereas SolarWinds does not. Prime does not scale as well as SolarWinds does. I prefer to use SolarWinds over Prime as it allows me to see more of my infrastructure than Prime.

SolarWinds goes light-years beyond checking for a simple up or down status. We have had the case where a network switch is up and passing packets but no longer providing PoE. NPM let's us know.

SolarWinds is widely used by my other colleagues in education and it was also recommended by an outside consultant group we use. SolarWinds has a strong community as well so all those factors played a large part in my selection of SolarWinds.

I've used cloud based things like New Relic and app logic, but nothing compares to SolarWinds in the simplicity and ease of rollout. Nagios is probably the closest, but I find it to require much more time to setup/configure given it's open source nature. SolarWinds is plug and play. I can deploy in less than an hour across an org and have real monitoring within two hours.

We like the commercial support aspect of SolarWinds. We like the flexibility SolarWinds provide with its product that are similar to open source. Direct access to the database is terrific and SolarWinds have thorough technical documentations.
