What is WordPress?

Wordpress is an open-source publishing platform popular with bloggers and a content management system. The appearance of a Wordpress site and many of its functions are managed through themes, and further customizable through altering code, though altering code is not required; templates and plugins to expand its capabilities are plentiful. Wordpress features integrated link management, and a search-engine friendly permalink structure. WordPress now allows multiple blogs to exist within one installation. Websites may host their own blogging communities, controlling and moderating content from a single dashboard.

Wordpress is popular due to its simplicity and modifiability. Furthermore implementing Wordpress costs only time. Two paid versions exist. The $99 premium plan allows a user an ad free custom domain with 13GB of space and advanced customization. The $299 Business plan allows unlimited space and supports eCommerce as well.

We have considered and operated within Shopify and Squarespace. Both serve their purpose for niche clients, but we do recommend WordPress as being the superior option. We find that WordPress is easier to use and offers maximum scalability while the others are more challenging to design, code, configure and launch.

I have never been a huge fan of platforms like Squarespace because a lot of the code is hidden behind locked doors, so from a speed and performance perspective, there's only so much you can do in order to optimize. On page speed insights, I haven't seen a Squarespace site do better than a score of 40, so I much prefer CMS platforms like Wix and Wordpress for my clients.

WordPress has the largest community of users, selection of plugins and themes, and the best third party support on the market.

It's tempting to go with something that is less customizable and therefore requires less maintenance, but if you desire flexibility, WordPress is a good choice.

Other Content Management Systems truly require development resources to implement and maintain for any length of time, making them far more expensive in the long run.

WordPress is free and so easy to use. I would recommend it over any competitor except for e-commerce. For an e-commerce website in most cases, I would recommend Shopify because of their shopping cart and processing speed. Shopify does charge monthly, as opposed to using WooCommerce on WordPress. So if the store doesn't get a decent amount of sales, I would stay with WordPress.

I prefer Wordpress because it is open source and has a huge community of users and developers. So it is incredibly flexible already because of the plugins available, and it can be further customized to any extent by readily available developer talent.

WordPress is much more user-friendly than systems such as AEM and Oracle, and thus more accessible and easy to onboard people to. It is also much more budget-friendly. WordPress is the most widely-used CMS on the market for a reason. WordPress does lack the power and other types of marketing integration that tools like AEM have. AEM, for instance, has built-in integration with Adobe Campaign, Adobe Target, and Adobe Analytics, which make for a seamless experience across your web properties. Ultimately, our department chose a two-pronged approach of using both WordPress and AEM to address unique needs across the organization.

WordPress has a larger market share and it is friendly and widely used. Across organizations, it shows ease of use, ability to integrate, multiple paths for creating sites, designs, and much more. For volunteer based organizations, WordPress is ideal and provides a path to train stakeholders to empower business functions. Overall, it has been the favorite when compared to other platforms.

WordPress has so many incredible features, it allows users to build a professional website and users can customize the themes even from the front-end and also from the code editor. WordPress plugins are more professional and useful if we compare them with other content management system extensions, modules, or plugins.

WordPress is more flexible and/or easier to use than the platforms above. While Wix and Squarespace are good for non-developers, and Drupal is good only for developers, WordPress can work well for both the end user, the viewer, and the developer.

In the past few years, WordPress is my go to and I don't even take the time to evaluate other competing software.

In the early years of WordPress, I often found myself going head to head with Drupal and Joomla, the other two legs of the "big three". I was never as comfortable with either of the other platforms.

While I have found myself over the years converting sites from either Drupal or Joomla to WordPress, I have not one time ever gone the other direction. I have never converted a WordPress site to something else.

Most important in the decision is the community. When you have so many peers and developers to choose from, the quality and breadth of solutions becomes so much more simple.

WordPress is WAY easier to get into than Drupal. Despite a lot of initial complaints about their editor, Gutenberg, I loved it. The auto-updates can actually work, unlike Drupal that often have more issues probably because Drupal requires a lot more custom work and it's better at that type of job. There are SO many plugins, you can accomplish almost anything in WordPress that you can do in another CMS and it is easier to find a developer that has experience with it. As a current NodeJS developer, I really think it has a great role in web development and receives way too many negative reviews from developers. It's half an IT software rather than a web framework and that is OK, and often times it's even better.

The almost unlimited functionality provided in WordPress is versatile and its ability to self host your own installation makes it less likely to get locked into a service provider. For example, other CMS like Wix and those provided by many hosting companies effectively lock you into their platform and it's not possible to take that website and move it elsewhere.

For clients, WordPress is also easy to use/intuitive in comparison to Drupal. Plugins such as WPbakery and Elementor can allow small business owners to edit their own blog as if they were using Microsoft Word.

Like WordPress, its e-commerce platform, WooCommerce usually provides almost all the functionality clients need for free. This is great for their ROI.

I have pretty limited experience with WP competitors, but I've used WP both personally and professionally for a long time now. The competitors you see ads for on TV sell themselves on ease of use. That is attractive, especially knowing the learning curve that comes with WP, but I can't shake the feeling that WP is the "pro" choice, or the "serious choice."

While still being relatively user-friendly (or at least pretty easy to learn the basics), WordPress blows the other hosted, 'out of the box' platforms like Wix and Squarespace out of the water. They simply can't compete when it comes to customizability, especially back-end and functionality customization, like installation of 3rd part analytics and marketing software (like conversion and visitor tracking software, analytics, etc.). Joomla was a decent standalone website framework and CMS that was flexible and 'developer-friendly' with advanced user controls, but simply doesn't have the extensibility that WordPress' massive ecosystem of 3rd party plugins, themes and support communities... which is why Joomla (as the second most used CMS) only has about 5% of the market share of websites.

I am the biggest fan of WordPress compared to others I've tried because you can further customize and edit your site to your liking. The others feel less intuitive and more cumbersome to update. You need to know more CSS/HTML coding in order to make a change to the other sites. With WordPress, I feel you can make more changes with a simple plugin.

We use WordPress to create blog posts but did not use it to create our website. Closest thing to WordPress that I have reviewed is Constant Contact since we also use that to tell our and reach donors and supporters. They reach people in different ways so we chose to use both.

I like Squarespace better because it is a lot easier to use and I've never had any security issues with Squarespace. We don't have a developer, so WordPress is challenging to stay in control of. We have to hire a third party to ensure the site continues to function well on WordPress, Squarespace is more low-maintenance.

I already knew how to use WordPress. One time, a client asked me to set up his site on Wix and I hated the layout of the platform and the learning curve I had to go through. I gave up. Squarespace sites look good, but I couldn't get into it because I was already so familiar with WordPress and the back end was too different.
