Act-On

Actually, I think Act-On is suitable for almost any business as its pricing structure enables you to remain in control and join up at a level that suits your organization. You get most, if not all, of the features you would get from some of the bigger players, like Marketo, HubSpot and Eloqua, without any of the cumbersome hassle of cost that comes with them. For mid-sized enterprises, Act-On is a no brainer but I'd even recommend it to some larger corporates as if they really compare what they're getting with Eloqua/Marketo etc., I think they'd be surprised to see what Act-On has to offer.

Honestly, I’ve seen this system scale from total start-up beginner businesses to larger businesses with more nuanced lists.

Pros

  • Behaviour Analysis. Anachron allows me to monitor all user behaviour on our websites, landing pages, emails webinars and other items. This knowledge, even the anonymous company data around who is on our sites and what they are doing is invaluable.
  • Email marketing and list management. Act-On's list management and email capabilities compare very favourably with some of the higher end automation tools I've used in the past. Although it has its quirks, it stands up strong against its biggest competitors in this regard.
  • Sales Support. The Act-On Anywhere Chrome Extension has rapidly become a must have item for our entire sales team. This recent addition to Act-On gives much greater insight into prospect behaviour to sales and most importantly enables the to get access to that information without having to log into another system, It's included right there in their emails and their web browser. The Act-On tab in Salesforce is also of great interest to our sales team.

  • Most Email Service Providers don't allow for logic branching in their drip sequencing - they allow for time delays or opt out/ins based on opens and maybe clicks, but no true branching or trees. This is a key differentiation for AC.
  • The drag and drop workflows and organization is fantastic, easy to use and fast. You can setup a sequence in a matter of minutes where it would take hours with other providers.
  • Integrating with others is a key part of the modern tech stack. Active Campaign works with Zapier, making it able to talk to landing page software, ad campaigns, other marketing automation, email databases and more. Plus it offers native integrations with Stripe, SurveyMonkey, PipeDrive, Paypal and more.
  • If you're just getting started and have less than 1k contacts, the pricing is very reasonable. You can get out between $17 and $100 a month and get a host of features competitors can't touch.

Cons

  • There is only one thing that I can honestly say I wish they would change. If you send an email from Dynamic CRM, it does log the email in the history which is nice. However, you can't preview or view the email in your CRM system. It provides you with a link that drives you out of that system and into Act-On.

  • The automations builder is a bit clunky sometimes and requires a lot of effort to do seemingly easy tasks.
  • The CRM is a little weak for our sales team. They'd like a tighter integration into Gmail as well as a more robust task management system.
  • The reporting could use a lot of work. There really aren't' any visual reports to show me funnel info and conversion rates of my leads from one step to the next. This would make it easier to improve our marketing efforts.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

Alternatives Considered

I'm sure our team went through the whole vetting process. I was not involved in that part so I am unable to really say how Act-On compares to other solutions in the market. I can say that my experience has been nothing less than excellent and that I think my team made the right decision

Main difference is the automations and number of integrations offered through ActiveCampaign. They offer extensive logic trees whereby you can automate entire campaigns based on customers' actions and reactions. MailChimp, as we've always used it, is better for one-off emails sent en masse but without the level of personal and automated follow up that Active Campaign allows.

Return on Investment

  • Better qualified leads fed into sales
  • Increased volume of leads
  • Significantly higher open rates and clicks
  • We're just beginning to utilize attribution from the point of introduction to the point of conversion which will give us insights into what is effective in producing qualified sales leads.

  • Used it for a wide variety of clients. Because pricing is so aggressive, it's hard not to have a positive ROI.
  • Ability to have CRM, email, web analytics (basic), SMS messaging, and others in a platform, allows companies access to these tools that they may not be able to afford if purchased ala carte.
