ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign works well for onboarding, deadline countdowns, informational emails, and marketing. I think that ActiveCampaign could improve it's one-to-one sales email options to really be an all in one solution with it's CRM.

It's especially useful for businesses just at that tipping point of getting too much business to manage on spreadsheets and word documents any more. If your team is growing it will help you to get more out of your existing people and slot new members in to the team with minimal training.

  • You can't create landing pages :(
  • The reporting section can be improve. The interface is not user-friendly at all. We have used another tool to visualize and analyze the results of our campaigns.

  • For users that have been HubSpot customers for a long time, the amount of content in the portal can be overwhelming. Better folder structures for workflows, lists, etc. would help to eliminate this clutter.
  • More custom reporting would be nice. For example, I would love to be able to auto-generate an email to my sales team of all new leads that have converted in the last week.
  • A lead rotator would be good. When new leads convert, it would be great to be able to auto-assign them to different salespeople on a pre-set rotation schedule.

With all the new features in HubSpot, the system can get a tad slow sometimes... That said, most of the time it is lightning fast and I have no problems. Because most of the integrations are API, they silently work in the background. I have not had trouble with lag due to HubSpot integration

The customer support representatives are so helpful. I never have to wait long to speak to a real person. They are always understanding and knowledgable about whatever it is I need help with. They get the answers or problems; figure it out quickly yet you don't feel rushed in any way. The customer support at HubSpot is some of the best I've ever seen. If only HubSpot could train the customer support representatives at airlines...

I did the 2-day classroom at HubSpot's corporate office in Cambridge. First off, it was amazing to see their corporate office in general. They have such a cool office environment. But it was also great to have the ability to learn in a workshop format with other HubSpot users and meet my Account Manager/ Inbound Marketing Consultant in person.

I started the HubSpot Academy and I did the online classes to get inbound certified long before purchasing the platform. The format is pretty simple: watch videos, do some workshopping, and then take a test to become certified. The classes are very informative and generally do not take too long to complete. Also, part of your implementation fee includes an Inbound Marketing Consultant who helps set up your first campaigns.

The training I received was well worth the time. I had used other systems previously (Pardot & Act-On) and didn't have a dedicated resource to get up and running. It makes a big difference to have access to someone when you have more complex questions to ask. I think I put the team up to a challenge often times, but 99% of the time they had a solution!

Alternatives Considered

Before ActiveCampaign we were using both MailChimp for some stuff as well as Hatchbuck for other stuff. The main reason we went with ActiveCampaign is the comprehensive automated campaigns you can set up. Hatchbuck's automated campaigns were very limited, you couldn't do much behavioral targeting. Same applied for MailChimp, automated features were limited. Plus, with MailChimp your contacts are stuck on one list and you can't easily move them around or segment across lists based on keywords/tags. That's where ActiveCampaign truly shines.

I have used free and not too expensive tools. However, even if you might consider HubSpot as expensive, it is not. HubSpot is a user-friendly, easy to use tool. It is a tool where you find everything you need in the same platform. All your contacts and leads management are easy to follow and your marketing campaigns are too!

While HubSpot initially, seven years ago, seemed built for SMBs it appears they have scaled their solution for larger enterprises. I do not have experience sending out 10 million-plus emails per month so I don't know how HubSpot would handle that. However, I do know that some other marketing automation platforms have had trouble with such scale. As such, I suggest HubSpot have one of it's enterprise customers share data on the length of time it takes to send out 1 million emails. Are we talking minutes, hours or days? Then decide what's right for you based on your business needs.
