ActiveCampaign

For a small company like us, it is very useful to build a list of subscribers through email campaigns and subscription forms. The accuracy of its email campaigns helps me to grow my list very fast.

I would say a 9 1/2 for recommending the product! It is very well suited for managing contacts with potential clients and clients. The ability to use the email blast is great, but the spam stoppage problem is the biggest problem. They need to fix that, but for communicating with clients individually, reminders to have calls, or appointments, or send letters this is excellent

Pros

  • Their HTML email builder is easy to use.
  • Their automation workflows have tons of options to send custom messages to your audience
  • It has advanced features at a much lower price than other vendors
No photo available
  • Trickle marketing, where we can send emails out to our prospects and through their actions, they can be added into other campaigns which we can follow up with them.
  • Tracks our notes and communication with each prospect.
  • It tracks the charges that are associated with the prospect or client profile. So we can see how much they have paid for a specific program they are associated with.

Cons

  • I wish they had a landing page builder included (like other tools do)
  • Their forms are not very customizable
No photo available
  • Lack of polish/refinement - Infusionsoft lacks a lot of polish. They are slowly making improvements, but it appears that the foundation that Infusionsoft was built on wasn't particularly well thought out. So much can be done in terms of layout, and usability. There could be improvements everywhere. Searching for contact records with advanced searches is time consuming and once you have criteria selected, it won't tell you what you selected. You have to go back through several tabs with long lists of dozens and dozens of fields to make sure you selected the right criteria. We have 500 tags which isn't common, but there is no way to search and select them. There is just a short box that we have to scroll through. It is tedious to select multiple tags and one wrong click can force you to start the process over. You have to hold down CTRL to selct multiple tags. In other places, Infusionsoft lets you search for tags which is great, but if you don't know exactly what you are searching for, it's nearly useless. Sometimes the search won't bring back the right results and it doesn't like it if you search with more than one word.
  • Infusionsoft is primarily for B2C - We are a B2B and probably aren't the typical user. We still make due with what Infusionsoft has to offer and we haven't yet found a worthy competitor that would make it worth the switch. The lack of features for B2B creates some difficulty for our sales team. You can try and tie contact records to companies, but functionality is limited and if a users fills out a form and doesn't enter the same exact company name, they will get unlinked.
  • Reporting - This has always been a weakness. The reports offered by Infusionsoft are lacking. You have a lot of reports and a lot of options, but you can never get quite what you want. Dashboard widgets are capable, but take a lot of time and maintenance to set up and maintain. This is where the Infusionsoft marketplace fills in the gap, but this brings on a large additional cost, and it's shame Infusionsoft can't get reporting right. Users have been complaining about this for years.
  • E-Commerce - Infusionsoft has an E-Commerce module, but it is lacking in features and customizability. The shopping cart is dated and clunky. Much refinement is needed.
  • Speed - Sometimes Infusionsoft is extremely slow. Pages take a while to load. Building campaigns will leave you waiting sometimes 10 minutes for a campaign to publish after making a few small changes. Performance can be improved in a lot of areas of the app to make it faster. We have a very fast connection and still experience slowness often. Some times it's especially slow and unresponsive, and other times it's bearable. Dashboard widgets take a long time to load as well. Everything needs some optimization work.

I will definitely be renewing my Infusionsoft subscription because it is still the best all-in-one solution for small businesses that includes CRM, automated email marketing, and ecommerce. I couldn't imagine running my business without it at this point. It is invaluable for tracking leads/opportunities, following up with customers, and getting new products in front of them. I expect Infusionsoft will help me take my business to the next level over the next few years.

OMG, it's all in one and that compromises everything, fundamentally. If you want a race car, invest in a race car. If you want a dune buggy, get that. If you want a boat that floats, go for it.

This training is taught often to the lowest common denominator so as to help as many customers of theirs as possible. We do the training and coaching and implementations for our clients. But clients who I know who have been to their training get trained well. The gap that can exist lies in you doing your part and really investing in using and building out the application. The training and education is only as good as your willingness to apply it.

Don't let the fear of implementing a new software solution keep you from unleashing the power of automation that Infusionsoft provides. With the right implementation partner, the process can not only be smooth and painless, it can actually help you get a better understanding for how your current communication process can be improved upon.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign is probably the best budget automation platform in my opinion. It has pretty advanced automation, similar to a Hubspot or Marketo, but at a much lower price. Platforms like Marketo have more advanced features, but most startups don't need that. ActiveCampaign has most of the features any marketing team would need

The others are not trying to be all things to all people. The others don't pretend their solution is the end-all-be-all to save small business owners. They are not all in one and don't pretend to be, regardless of the price points, from lower to higher. We used Infusionsoft because I, as the owner of the company, was willing to invest hundreds of hours learning and using the system. Plus, I paid out thousands of dollars over the first several years for others to help me integrate it with our marketing campaigns because I am not a programmer and never will be. I enjoy doing this kind of work on top of the coaching and advising I do for a living. Then I made automation and content marketing a natural extension of my business. It complimented by business model, until recently, when we found a better solution that does not try to be all things to all people and save the world.

Scalability

Pricing is user and email and function based. Way too many pay walls and not native function for scaling. It's scaleable with NASA level marketing automation talent you must pay to engage. Otherwise, it gets expensive quickly for scaling to a true small business, which is what they target. Over 25 users and you're screwed. Look at the competition first, evaluate what you really need for your business and start there. Keep it simple, build your cash flow and confidence in the people you hired to make this work and then scale. Don't get sucked into the dream that this thing will help you sell your book to millions and you get famous while hanging on your boat or whatever. Building a small business is hard enough. Adding software often adds complexity in order to successfully scale.

Return on Investment

  • Following up with leads is an easy ROI. As they say, the 'money is in the follow up', but it takes time and effort to build these systems correctly. Once we've implemented them properly, there was an easy ROI to measure.
  • Having our CRM centralized with as much data as possible in one system has also been really helpful for us.

  • Our success is NEVER based on software. Neither is yours. Software is a tool. Your success and ours in business and life have more to do with your strategy, discipline, focus, ethics, team and overall desire to succeed no matter what.
  • I used to be far more in favor of this solution until I got to see a number of new competitors who focus on pure automation, business intelligence, ease of use for professionals to implement, etc.
  • The worst part about this solution is how hard they make it to import and clean list, regardless of source, and begin using the system to send emails, which is it's core function. They make it hard to do this on purpose, under the guise that it's about list integrity, deliverability, etc. And they compel recipients of emails to report you for spam on the tail end of an opt out. Yuck. Many competitors will not make it so hard! But this doesn't mean you can import crappy lists and perform spammy email practices.
