ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign works well for onboarding, deadline countdowns, informational emails, and marketing. I think that ActiveCampaign could improve it's one-to-one sales email options to really be an all in one solution with it's CRM.

Infusionsoft

Infusionsoft excels with small business. It really tries hard to represent the small business community. If you are a small business, there is a good chance it will work well for you. If you are a part of a medium or large business, however, just think twice about it and consider other options first.

Pros

  • Marketing Automation
  • Click/Link Tracking
  • Email Integration with Gmail via a Chrome extension
No photo available
  • You can really keep track of contacts with your clients or customers via email being recorded into the records and via the notes sections for phone call notes.
  • Keeping track of when to contact is huge because every client became a client at different times, so remembering that every 3 months this person needs a package shipped is important and not an easy task without Infusionsoft!
  • Automated Response! This is such a great thing Infusionsoft does! If someone says contact me, in 4 minutes they get an email saying we will be contacting you soon with a staff members name and phone number. They then have more contact information and an expectation!

Cons

  • It's reporting functionality is terrible. I can't emphasize this enough. There is not a path for ad hoc reports; only canned system reports and some ability to use advanced search and filters to "try" and work around this.
  • The form tool does not have the best styling capabilities.
  • Their list building / segmentation features are difficult to confidently maneuver when trying to establish unique paths for individual contacts based on certain triggers / behavioral actions.

  • While regular updates are a good thing, Infusionsoft will make changes that don't seem to work for many of its users. I have seen several of these changes that needed to be reversed after they released them and then were bombarded with feedback from daily users saying the change was impeding their company's efficiency. Change can be a good thing, but too much change just causes chaos.
  • Infusionsoft does allow for customization of certain areas in the program, but there needs to be more customization allowed so companies can set things up the way they work best for them and their staff. For example, on the General tab, there is name, address, phone, email, etc...but some pertinent info is on a different tab -- like a person's spouse name or nickname. Flipping back and forth between tabs is inefficient. When you call a person and his spouse answers but you don't know her name because you can't flip to the other tab quickly enough, it's embarrassing. Same if the guy's name is Bartholomew but he prefers to go by John...his legal/billing name is in the General information. If you can't or don't flip to the tab with his nickname, you won't know to call him John.
  • They have been improving their search function, but in general, I find Infusionsoft's search to be sluggish. If I accidentally put in the wrong information, I still need to wait for it to run before I can search for the correct information.
  • We were used to having a "merge records" option when doing a less-detailed search from the Dashboard, but with their latest release, they have removed that function. Now we need to do the more detailed search if we find duplicate records on the less-detailed search. This wastes time.

We have invested a lot into Infusionsoft and are using it to automate our processes and marketing. Changing CRMs would have a HUGE cost for us and based on our evaluations, the grass isn't greener elsewhere. Infusiosoft fits most of our needs and is slowly getting better each year. Their support is great and we will continue to use them until something much better comes around or our company outgrows a small business CRM.

Infusionsoft is certainly powerful enough to do anything you need it to do and for the average computer-user it should be easy to figure out. Anyone who has used other CRMs should have no problem adapting to Infusionsoft.

OMG, it's all in one and that compromises everything, fundamentally. If you want a race car, invest in a race car. If you want a dune buggy, get that. If you want a boat that floats, go for it.

This training is taught often to the lowest common denominator so as to help as many customers of theirs as possible. We do the training and coaching and implementations for our clients. But clients who I know who have been to their training get trained well. The gap that can exist lies in you doing your part and really investing in using and building out the application. The training and education is only as good as your willingness to apply it.

It was frustrating as hell. You can't teach a kid to ride a bike in a seminar, you can't do it over the phone with tech support, unless you have some talent and the patience of Job. Being is business is hard enough. Adding new software is a pain in the butt. The path of least resistance is to find a professional who lives in this stuff and pay up for the talent. It's less expensive in the long run and you'll likely not need to self medicate. As much.

Alternatives Considered

Before ActiveCampaign we were using both MailChimp for some stuff as well as Hatchbuck for other stuff. The main reason we went with ActiveCampaign is the comprehensive automated campaigns you can set up. Hatchbuck's automated campaigns were very limited, you couldn't do much behavioral targeting. Same applied for MailChimp, automated features were limited. Plus, with MailChimp your contacts are stuck on one list and you can't easily move them around or segment across lists based on keywords/tags. That's where ActiveCampaign truly shines.

We have used Pipedrive for our franchise sales side, but going forward we will be using ActiveCampaign for both our franchise sales and lead management for our owners. ActiveCampaign isn't as feature heavy as Infusionsoft, but it's a whole lot easier to use and setup. It allows us to manage separate accounts for our owners, has a mobile app, and won't require as much of a time investment to train our owners.

Pricing is user and email and function based. Way too many pay walls and not native function for scaling. It's scaleable with NASA level marketing automation talent you must pay to engage. Otherwise, it gets expensive quickly for scaling to a true small business, which is what they target. Over 25 users and you're screwed. Look at the competition first, evaluate what you really need for your business and start there. Keep it simple, build your cash flow and confidence in the people you hired to make this work and then scale. Don't get sucked into the dream that this thing will help you sell your book to millions and you get famous while hanging on your boat or whatever. Building a small business is hard enough. Adding software often adds complexity in order to successfully scale.

Return on Investment

  • Positive ROI: ActiveCampaign has allowed us to use tags and automation to segment our subscribers based on purchases so that we can keep those buyer engaged with emails and information that pertains to the specific things they are interested in, and not bother them with things they are not. Thereby increasing open rates and click-throughs and decreasing unsubscribe rates which thereby increases sales.
  • Negative ROI: Learning the program takes some time as do setting up the automations, so you need to be willing to make the investment in time to do so. Initially, this may adversely affect your ROI.
Tracy Beers profile photo
  • It's increased through improving a more effective and better customer experience
  • It's increased via the ability to target and appropriately market to those interested and creating interest
