What is Paycom?

For 25 years, Paycom Software, Inc. (NYSE:PAYC) has offered businesses and their employees HR and payroll technology that provides direct access to their data. Paycom's Beti® technology enables employees to do their own payroll, so they are guided to find and fix costly errors before payroll submission. From onboarding and benefits enrollment to talent management, Paycom’s software streamlines processes, and gives employees access to their own HR information. Paycom can now serve businesses of all sizes in the U.S. and internationally.

Paycom states they have approximately 36,820 clients across the United States (as of Dec. 31, 2023), up 1% from the prior year. On April 15, 2014, Paycom became a public company with its shares opening for trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PAYC. In early 2020, the company joined the S&P 500.

We use Paycom as our HRIS, payroll system, applicant tracking, recruiting, hiring, personnel files, learning management system, and communication system with employees.
  • Enables electronic personnel files
  • Automates discipline
  • Administers clock in procedures
  • Paycom does not provide customers with any access to upper management so issues can not be escalated when needed.
  • Paycom's first response to all of our requests is 'no.'
  • We have requested fixes to issues four years ago that still aren't resolved. For example, the system only knows Central Time so if you are located in another time zone all of your transactions are stamped in Central Time.
  • Paycom is a better option for small companies with small payrolls. ACH is not an option for large payrolls and they will not change this for large, investment-grade organizations.
  • There is no way to run a headcount report with an 'as of' date.
  • The front line team to assist customers changes a lot and often is hard to reach.
  • Paycom will not permit automated background checks unless you use their background check solution.
  • Paycom normally will not integrate with other providers of systems that companies use.
Paycom is well suited for small companies with small payrolls; if you want to set up electronic personnel files; and if you want to set up access down to the user level. Paycom will work well for companies that are satisfied with the solution the way it comes. Paycom is not well suited for medium to large size companies as Paycom limits the dollar amount of the ACH for payroll. Paycom is not well suited for a company that likes customization or companies that want to link Paycom to other vendors they use. Paycom will not permit you to automate background checks unless you use their option.

We use Paycom for all of our HR needs from payroll, benefits administration, applicant tracking, onboarding, offboarding, data management, etc. There's a large scope of use for the platform and because it encompasses so much there are a lot of modules that we would like to continue to implement in the future.

I used Paycom at a previous employer for 2 years. I was Project Manager when we went through the implementation. We were extremely pleased with the implementation process and the product. After 30+ years of HR experience, and having gone through system conversions 6 times, in addition to having worked with 8 HRIS/PR products, Paycom was by far the one I ended up comparing everything else too. When we found ourselves in the unexpected situation of having to find a new provider at my new job - Paycom was definitely the first vendor we contacted. In the end, Paycom was our product of choice, and we began implementation in Nov. 2021. Even in the 5 years since my prior implementation - things have improved and the process was definitely the easiest implementation I have ever been through. The team was tremendously knowledgeable, they did the majority of the building work, and they made the entire process feel so seamless. We love that it is an all-inclusive system - this eliminates so much error, makes our jobs significantly easier, and places a lot of the ownership of data onto the employees themselves - they know their data best!
  • PAF - Personnel Action Forms, makes changes easier, faster, electronic, and through routing and approval, are life and driven by the effective date
  • Online benefit enrollment - the easiest process I have ever seen
  • BETI - the new functionality that allows employees to review and approve their paychecks prior to posting payroll - catches errors before payroll is finalized, and helps employees have a better understanding in acknowledging the accuracy of their pay.
  • On-line Self On-boarding. Saves our team time and improves accuracy!
  • Applicant tracking - from posting the job to the offer and hire - keeps track of candidates through the entire process - all in one system!
  • Payroll has never been so easy! BETI has cut down my processing time by more than half!
  • Excellent App! Our employees and managers LOVE it! They can approve things with ease right from their phones.
  • Ability to customize (add fields) to some of the canned reports
  • The minor issue of setting up payroll processing schedules - if you have different deductions based on the payroll within the month - some additional ability to set it up and forget it... it does require some additional monitoring
  • The manual check process is easy - but it would be helpful if the printed check included the routing numbers and account numbers coded at the bottom - we have had to do some editing to print the checks to match our check stock - apparently that is not a current option for them.
1) All-inclusive system - GAME CHANGER! 2) Philosophy and practices within Paycom place ownership of employee data onto the employee themselves - this not only saves our HR/PR team time but increases accuracy and removes liability for the company. 3) BETI payroll process has streamlined our payroll processing, saving time and catching errors prior to posting. 4) Mobile App is amazing, easy to use, and the majority of our employees & manager love it. 5) As everything is managed electronically, it does require all employees to have an email address and have access to an electronic device (computer, tablet, smartphone). Most people do, but our company still has a population of individuals where this can be a challenge. We are working through it and have found the majority of our employees this is not an issue.

Paycom was implemented within our organization in 2020. We utilize the time and attendance, payroll, reporting, training, benefits administration, talent management, and talent acquisition functions of the system. Time and attendance, payroll, and reporting are the most user-friendly functions. The remaining offerings are cumbersome to manage, with the least user-friendly being talent acquisition and the documents within onboarding. My department´s struggles within these platforms have made for a poor candidate experience and have forced the company to utilize external options like Docusign to manage the onboarding. Outside of the software itself, Paycom fails in all aspects of customer service. The sales team informed me that we would have a dedicated specialist. While we do have an assigned specialist (we are on our second because the other was transferred), we rarely are able to contact them on phone (this was the same for the first assigned specialist). It has gotten so bad that we have a tally of how many times we can contact her on the phone (it has become a joke with a sour punchline). When our specialist is not available we are sent to another team member for assistance. The issue with this is they provide solutions, my team executes them, something goes wrong and when we finally do get feedback from our assigned specialist we are told that the instruction given to us was incorrect. This has happened a minimum of seven times within our time with Paycom. There is also a lack of urgency for Paycom issues dealing with our executive staff. We have been working on benefit integration for over a year. Our carriers have requested that Paycom assign another representative due to a lack of response. Paycom is likely a great option for companies with less than 200 employees. We will be exploring other options and terminating our contract.

I use the Paycom app as an employee and it allows me to keep up with time-off requests, payroll, tax documents, and more. There are additional links to help me better understand how the app works as well as important documents regarding my place of employment. This is a super useful and user-friendly app.

I do not see any problems with my profile and services. I see some complications/hassles with the client-side login provided. Batch approval of time off requests does not work many times. Batch approval of goals was not possible and when we approve a goal, it navigates back to the main list and we have to search for the next goal to approve and it is a time-consuming process. A single page to update goals for performance and development using drop-down menus and comment sections can be of much help.

We use Paycom for onboarding, payroll, expense management and performance management. We have always manually cut checks to employees for expenses (mileage, meals, etc.) but now use expense management to add it to their paycheck. It has saved countless hours of employees' time and accounting!

Paycom's greatest asset is its simplicity of use. Employees can make their own changes and access their data in real-time. Everything is on a single website so there is no need to import or export data between multiple websites which is common with many other payroll service providers. We have a lot of shift differentials and it took some time to set them up, but they are now working perfectly. I also like how easy it is to upload our general ledger data to our accounting software.

I've recently started using Paycom with a new employer and it's been a great experience. I've had past experiences with self-managed solutions and immediately see the value in partnering with Paycom. As an employee, I feel more empowered to make changes for myself and appreciate the ability to change what I want on my own timeline. I also enjoy the paycheck review feature; great idea to make sure my check and deductions are what I expect them to be. From a manager's standpoint, the application has worked well and I'm able to manage my team with ease and speed. Overall it's been a great experience and fully supports our partnership with Paycom.

I would recommend Paycom for any size organization, although I am most familiar with company sizes of 200-500. Paycom is our one-shop-stop. We do not use any other platforms to run the organization. Recruitment, onboarding, HR record keeping, payroll, benefits, talent management, etc. is done exceptionally well within Paycom and would not go elsewhere just to do another function/feature/service.

My organization has implemented Paycom over the last several months to move away from another HRIS provider. Paycom has surpassed our high expectations for quality customer service. We have had a phenomenal implementation specialist who has been extremely thorough in fully understanding our organization's policies and needs to ensure we're getting the right solutions. The biggest solution has been responsive and knowledgeable service - we previously only had the option to submit requests for help via email and had to wait, sometimes weeks or months, for a reply. Our agency has a very complicated time and attendance setup (various shift differentials, language differentials, location differentials, and staff working in multiple labor allocations areas) and this has been built out in the system thoroughly and correctly. We have also made a huge shift in the compliance area and been able to make and hold our employees much more accountable for their own timesheets, as well as removing manager responsibility/access to make changes to timesheets for employees. Paycom has been a wonderful change for our organization and staff have been embracing it as well.

I am the Human Resource Director at our company. We use Paycom for all of our payroll, benefits, and review processes. We have been extremely happy with the services and the software from Paycom. It's easy to use for our employees with an awesome app - and very intuitive. If I ever have any questions or need help on any processes, the Paycom representatives are right at my fingertips or at the end of the phone to resolve any issues. They are very knowledgeable and always know the resolution to my questions. What a pleasure it is for me to have Paycom as our payroll provider.

We use Paycom to run payroll and for onboarding and offboarding. We hope to expand to utilize expense management and applicant tracking in the coming months.
  • Web and app interface well and provide a reasonable user experience for employees, regardless of their tech comfort level.
  • Advanced Report Writer helps me pull the exact information that I need rather than trying to filter down a canned report.
  • I don't know the solution, but I know that we've struggled with the competency of our support specialists. They are nice and try to be helpful but have consistently lacked some of the advanced knowledge we need. Both times, we've had to revert to our higher-up exec, Ashley Morgan, to solve problems. Both our recent young man and a young woman were trying to read the manual to learn as they taught us. Their exposure and onboarding need to be more extensive before they are assigned a client, in order to set them up for success and provide a better client experience.
Paycom provides a user experience that is good for our teachers and especially those who aren't as comfortable with technology. Applicant tracking is less applicable to us in the way it is designed because we don't have one person who hires all teachers but rather teams of people, depending on the grade and position. Paycom is great for schools, and we would love for Paycom to develop some best practice training that is school specific rather than us consistently trying to adapt industry standards from the corporate sector to our area.

We use Paycom for bi-weekly payroll, all related payroll tax filings, and the creation of annual tax documents. Paycom makes managing Payroll and tax issues easy. They continue to come out with new and innovative ways to manage HR processes and have been fantastic during the pandemic. I have worked with many reps over the years and each has been knowledgeable, shown urgency when needed, and responsive.
  • Take care of their customers.
  • Communication.
  • Ease of use.
  • Innovative products.
  • Roll out of changing processes.
Paycom is innovative and creative, even in times like a pandemic. They make sure your employees continue to be taken care of and are paid. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of working with has always had a team attitude and yes mentality.

We use the basic products in Paycom. payroll, docs, and checklist, reports. just the basics, what we use works for us.
  • user friendly systems for managers
  • easy to navigate once you know what you are doing.
  • user friendly apps for employees
  • giving more information when there are updates in the system. more communication.
  • tax being client-facing. we have many things that are pending tax and with us unable to connect with the tax team we are in an endless battle with the IRS with no answers.
  • being able to use our specialist as needed. we are never able to connect with her because she is always on other lines with other clients. it would be nice to be able to work with the specialist who knows our setup best.
From our set up we do not use many products. what we use is very minimum and easy to use.

Paycom is an amazing app. We use it to address official problems like time and labor management and for payroll management as well. And we do use it for HR management sometimes.

  • In the case of our employee's expense management, Paycom is so much suitable and flexible for us.

We can use Paycom in a wide range of HR management. We can track applicants by using it. Time and attendance of every day's schedule could be maintained. And most of all our employee's payments are fully paid by Paycom.

Paycom was purchased to transition the payroll process at our company from a manual system that utilized Excel and a [third-party] payroll vendor. The goal was to give associates access to their information, have less data entry, time and attendance tracking, and a simpler process for payroll. I was not a part of the initial implementation but [was] used as an admin when I came on board with the company.

  • Employees can update their own information in the app[.]
  • Customer service [in my experience] is lacking in timing and efficiency[.]
  • Tax reporting - we had many issues that took the better part of a year to get resolved[.]
  • Vacation accruals were not accurate[.]
If you need a simple system to automate some of your payroll processes, Paycom may be for you. However, keep a close eye on your invoices as they are more than giving when it comes to charging additional fees for small things. The system is overall easy to use and is much like other payroll providers. It is a bit pricey, though and those additional fees add up fast.

Our company uses Paycom for all sorts of great things! Paycom helps with our payroll, benefits, OSHA logs, Personnel Action Forms, Disciplinary forms. Paycom always has resolutions to anything we bring up and are very good with follow-up.
  • Very good at walking you through the system to help resolve any problems you are encountering or don't know how to do.
  • Great at informing you of new features and always updating the Paycom system with all the new state requirements that come out.
  • Great customer service.
  • System is very user friendly
  • [With] the documents and management feature, I wish there was an option to upload a document directly to an employee's profile versus having to create a document type first.
Paycom is well suited for any company to use for payroll and benefits. These features are so easy to use and so helpful for management and employees.

I use it to manage my time off. I also use it to view my pay stubs. I also upload information to it about my Covid vaccination status. Lastly, I use it to receive communication from management about my salary, benefits, and what I need to submit. I love Paycom! It really is wonderful.

  • It shows days off as hours instead of days.
I was really needing to find out what my Covid benefits were when I was ill. I was able to see how much time I get off for Covid. I was also able to see how many personal days I have. Lastly, I was able to see how many sick days I have.
