Low-Code Development Platforms

Low-code development platforms enable businesses to create simple applications without needing technical expertise. These products abstract away some aspects of application development, allowing users with little to no programming knowledge to quickly build applications to solve business problems without in-depth training, extensive debugging, and code review. Often, low-code development tools have a drag-and-drop UI with connectable components, encouraging experimentation and giving a visual overview of the program’s flow. Many products allow advanced users to add custom code to the application, enabling programmers to add custom functionality to an application. Most low-code development platforms also include third-party integration components, multi-platform deployment tools, security and encryption options, and application performance monitoring.

Buyers considering low-code development products should consider how many people will be working together to create applications. Some products feature team collaboration tools, while others cater to a single-user experience. It’s also important to evaluate the expected scale of the applications to be built. Some products include tools that help developers create large-scale applications, while others are best suited to quickly develop lightweight programs.

OutSystems

OutSystems is an all-purpose low-code development platform focused on serving enterprise needs. In addition to its drag-and-drop application development capabilities, it includes in-app feedback tools, multi-platform deployment and updating assistance, UI templates, and automatic security updates. Accessibility-friendly components help applications meet standards such as WCAG and ADA. Outsystems’s integration nodes allow access to SOAP and REST interfaces, in addition to pre-built integrations for third-party software like Slack, Salesforce, and DropBox. Its underlying architecture is designed for scalability, allowing the application to grow with a company’s customer base. A significant portion (42%) of OutSystems users on TrustRadius are from enterprises. Reviewers love OutSystems for its solid multi-platform development capabilities, strong community support and interaction, and rapid advancement of developer skills.

Oracle APEX

Oracle Application Express (APEX) is a low-code development platform included with Oracle Database. It uses a page-based drag-and-drop interface to build applications. Oracle APEX is closely integrated with Oracle Database, providing numerous methods to search, filter, edit, and chart data. REST access tools allow applications to integrate with web services. For cross-platform devices, Oracle APEX offers mobile app templates, automatically-adjusting application UI layouts, and touch gesture components. It also offers security components, accessibility tools, and a built-in advisor that evaluates app quality and scans for errors. A little over half (53%) of Oracle APEX users on TrustRadius are from enterprise-level organizations. Its strong data security, interactive report generation tools, and fast implementation and onboarding are just a few of the reasons reviewers recommend Oracle APEX.

Pega Platform is a cloud-based low-code development solution focused on automation and business process management (BPM). Its application components include tools for BPM automation, workforce intelligence, and case management. Reviewers value Pega’s application scalability, no-install implementation, and powerful automation capability.

Appian is a low-code development platform focused on BPM and process automation. Users can use Appian to develop applications with rules-based decisioning, document and content management, skills-based work routing, and connections to third-party systems like PayPal, DropBox, and LinkedIn. Appian automatically creates secure, mobile-ready versions of its applications, and can deploy applications immediately upon completion. A large majority (76%) of Appian users on TrustRadius are from enterprises. Reviewers highlight Appian’s fast onboarding for new users, responsive online community and customer support, and automatic data-sharing between Appian applications.

Nintex Platform is a BPM and process automation solution with low-code development tools. Its application builder includes workflow automation, custom user-responsive forms, document generation, and analytics features. Nintex Platform includes integrations for third-party applications like SharePoint and Salesforce, allowing Nintex applications to use external data. Quick Base is a low-code application development platform focused on database management. Products included in the 2019 Top Rated Low-Code Development Platforms list must have been in the top tier of their category TrustMap as of March 15th, 2019.
