8x8 Virtual Office

8x8 Virtual Office is well-suited for offices that have a lot of mobile employees. Calls can be forwarded to a cell phone so that nobody has to miss an important call. In a traditional office setting, you do need a reliable internet connection so that calls aren't diverted directly to voice mail.

Great for SIMPLE call trees and user extensions. It has trouble with advanced call routing, in my experience. The "builder" for call trees is clunky and cumbersome and regularly drops changes prior to saving. I'm not a huge fan of that tool. We've ended up greatly reducing our call tree as users complained of delayed button responses and oddities when flowing through the queue. Often times RingCentral support will unsuccessfully attempt to recreate the issue and just mark it as "closed" which can be frustrating.

Pros

  • The feedback collection system is easy and user-friendly. It collects a screenshot of your current page when you go to submit feedback, so it's easy to reference.
  • The integration of the 8x8 calendar with my phone/Outlook calendar is extremely helpful. Never missed a meeting!
  • Call quality is great!

  • Each user has their own conference bridge number included with their profile and with unlimited minuted. Other competitors wanted to charge $.03/minute and would charge additionally per month per conference bridge. This feature brings savings and flexibility.
  • They have vast options of compatible IP phones (Polycom, Cisco, YeaLink). They will help you deploy a third party phone if you decide to purchase one outside of their website (only the deployment, no continuing support).
  • Their customer service is fantastic. From getting started with your new phone system to continuing support, they really excel in this area.

Cons

  • I think the 8x8 mobile app for Android could be more visually appealing. More use of color, contrast, etc.
  • SMS service should not require a subscription.
  • Call quality is sometimes questionable. App has glitches where it freezes at times.

  • Oftentimes, calls to not get forwarded to my mobile phone and result in having to close out the app and restart it.
  • Closing out from conference meetings is tricky (not simply just closing out the meeting window).

Based on their poor customer service and lack of warranty replacement, I would not recommend or use 8x8.

We switched to RingCentral for ease of administration, flexibility of integration (fax, web meetings, chat client, mobile app) and competitive price. Although the system has had a few quirks as it's been relying on our network much more heavily and integrating with our next-gen firewall, I can't speak highly enough of what RingCentral has done for our business. I love it and can't wait to renew for a longer period of time at an even more competitive rate.

Relatively easy to use. Minor tweaks would make it perfect.

Alternatives Considered

With Onebox, our employees had to use their own cell phones for their work calls. Additionally, there was no call queue function available at the time. Instead, all cell phones would ring at once, and it was a mad dash to who would answer. 8x8 has way more robust features to offer a growing company.

One of the biggest reasons we left OnSIP was issues with call dropping due to call volume and amount of users. To my knowledge (as I was not intimately involved in our transfer of VOIP services), OnSIP began harming our SDR department with frequent call dropping. We even upgraded our ISP services and bandwidth up/down to try and alleviate any issues thereof, but the ultimate problem we determined was with OnSIP and we decided to part ways with them. Since we transferred over, our SDR team and customer service teams have been happy as call drops are now a rarity.
