We use Mattermost at Ortiz Gaming / IGS as the main communicator for all teams, integrating the offices in Sao Paulo, Mexico City, and the Philippines. We have previously used other solutions and chat services, but they were in some cases expensive for the number of users we have, or inefficient. We have migrated to Mattermost in the middle of the Covid pandemics, and we are very happy with the results so far.

  • 250 dollars/month cost reduction from the previous communication platform.
  • 75% reduction on the overall volume of emails in the organization.
We use the self-hosted community version in our organization and feel very confident with the fact that we have access to the source code. Before moving to Mattermost, we first had invested in a communication platform that was acquired by a competitor and discontinued, which brought many problems; and then a closed-source service that kept raising its cost to a point where it was not cost-effective for us anymore. Mattermost solved both problems.
The API is very well documented, and there are many plugins and integrations that are open source, which gives a great background for starting to develop our own integrations and plugins. Besides all that, there are plugins available for almost all well-known DevOps and CI/CD tools, which also accelerated our implementation and integration time.
Before Mattermost, we used Stride first, and then Slack as our communication platform. Stride got discontinued so it is not comparable, but Slack got very costly for us, with basically the same features as Mattermost - a matter of fact, the "reply" feature is surprisingly non-existent on Slack (you can reply by opening a different thread, but that is hard to follow in most cases), and not only exists in Mattermost but very straightforward. We have considered using Discord too, but then chose Mattermost for its open-source nature, and the possibility of running our very own self-hosted servers, with total control.
Yes
It replace Slack, and the main reason for the substitution was cost reduction. We are happy with the change, as in terms of the features we need they are all covered.
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
Transitioning from Slack to Mattermost within our organization was primarily driven by Mattermost's robust API compatibility for integrations. With a substantial volume of webhook calls necessary for notifications across our systems, Mattermost provided the perfect solution with its seamless integration capabilities. The ability to seamlessly integrate with existing systems via APIs ensured a smooth transition without disrupting our workflow. This compatibility not only enhanced our communication processes but also streamlined our operations, making Mattermost the ideal choice for our organization's needs.
Looking back, we can't help but wish we had made the decision sooner. Mattermost has unequivocally proven to be the right choice for our communication platform. In hindsight, we realize we spent too much time worrying about the potential impact of transitioning rather than focusing on the substantial benefits it would bring. If we were to revisit our evaluation and selection process, we would prioritize a more proactive approach, recognizing the value of embracing change rather than hesitating due to fear of transition.

Mattermost is used company-wide as a collaboration tool, providing chat and conferencing options
  • Slack-like collaboration
  • A wide variety of plugins
  • Somewhat random selection of features that require a paid version
  • The usefulness of some integrations is questionable
Mattermost is perfect for teams that want to take advantage of what Slack offers without incurring the cost or opening up the security risks of a cloud-based collaboration platform. It is perhaps less than ideal for users who are very non-technical or who want a lot of features in a plug-and-play package.

  • It has allowed us to implement videoconferencing between our offices very simply and cheaply.
  • Some non-technical users have expressed frustration with trying to use more complex features, requiring more IT intervention.
We have not modified the code
The integration options can be less than intuitive
Mattermost is very similar to Slack and has the advantage (in our case) of being entirely on-premises, and entirely free. The feature set is similar, and it has filled the original need that Slack was suggested as a solution for very well. Teams is potentially a better choice for groups whose Microsoft licensing already includes it, or who want the range of direct integration with other Microsoft products.

We are starting to use Mattermost along with Slack for cross team and cross organization communication.
  • Good usability
  • Good with our project management and workflows
  • Good tool for the Enterpise
  • Need more integrations from other products with Mattermost
This has been effective with communications across teams outside my immediate team. We are able to use it for threading and we can use it across multiple channels. When we need immediate feedback with one of our partners we get updates on the status of their service. We have become more productive since we starting using Mattermost.

  • Increased collaboration
  • More responsive to operational issues
  • Better integrations with other monitoring tools
We have not modified the source code.
We were able to integrate it fairly quickly. This is a real plus for this service.
Kind of a different space - more power than what you get with Google messaging.

Mattermost is used by my company as a cost-effective alternative to other collaboration platforms. It allows us to effectively delineate our different projects and ongoing discussions, and add external users as needed to collaborate on specific projects without exposing them to other business discussions and unrelated projects. We have installed the self-managed version on our own server and have not leveraged the paid enterprise support.
  • User management
  • Discussion delineation (channels)
  • Multi-platform support
  • Easy installation and maintenance
  • Notifications - buggy on iOS and macOS
  • Embedded media integration - some attachments only download, or don't display/navigate well inside the app
  • Integrations with email and calendar would be nice if native to the app
Mattermost is a fantastic alternative to Slack and Microsoft Teams in terms of cost-effectiveness, simplicity of maintenance, and control over your business data. We chose Mattermost because our company's structure is cost-prohibitive for Slack and Microsoft Teams. Mattermost allows us the user control we need to attach external guest users to specific projects, as well as the security of knowing exactly where our business data is stored. A self-managed installation of Mattermost may not be as effective when applied to large, rapidly scaling teams as that may require more IT support than available - however they do provide a paid, managed option.

  • Low operations costs
  • Flexible user access controls minimizes onboarding time
  • Regular manual back-end maintenance required
While we have not modified the Mattermost software package in any way, we do have it deployed on our own cloud server, which has allowed for cost savings and direct integration with our existing technical infrastructure. This allows us to manage and apply security updates in an aligned way with our other technical infrastructure, and allows us to quickly address and mitigate potential vulnerabilities or incidents if they should occur. We have found the manual Mattermost installation to be robust and flexible.
We have not yet found useful integrations with other products and platforms in our technical suite. Those that exist look useful in their intended circumstances, and we look forward to getting to work with them in the future. We would love to see greater email and calendar integration within Mattermost, allowing a more fulsome cloud experience for our users.
Mattermost provides a familiar user interface, fast performance, and a complete set of user collaboration tools and features - it stands out by providing a self-managed installation option for better integration with existing IT assets and more control over data storage. We love Mattermost because it works perfectly for our company structure (freelance resource collaboration on projects) and we know our data is safe and exportable.
2
All company employees are using Mattermost, with flexibility to add freelance workers as needed to specific projects. We appreciate that Mattermost can scale to meet our needs, while being a cost-effective solution for our business between projects when our resource count is low. Our core staff fundamentally represents leadership and sales, as well as technical direction.
1
Currently I (technical director) support our installation of Mattermost on a cloud server. This allows us to maintain a low monthly cost for the service, and is balanced with only moderate needs to maintain security and other software updates on the server. Now that Mattermost is built into the Ubuntu app repository, it's extremely simple to set up and maintain a Mattermost installation with only minimal experience working with a Linux command line.

  • Voice and video communication with coworkers
Mattermost has been an excellent tool for our business, allowing for a very cost-effective means of communicating, collaborating, and sharing project and business documentation and resources. The free community edition allows for simple installation on existing cloud server resources which results in significantly lower recurring costs compared to the competition.

We wanted a chat/media collaboration tool that would scale up and down with our small business, that would be easy to maintain in the long-term, and that would complement our other technology platforms. Mattermost was chosen after trying several low-cost solutions due to it's robust feature set and ease of setup and maintenance.
Special attention would be given to notifications and how effectively the app displays them. When business is slow and employees aren't necessarily checking Mattermost daily as part of their routine, it's critical that notifications clearly come through to prompt them to open the app. We have had some challenges with notifications not coming through, and the surprise of checking in on the app only to discover that you've missed important call-outs.
