Product Details

What is Xero?

Xero is an online accounting software platform for small businesses and their advisors, as well as for personal finance. Xero competes most often with QuickBooks Online. Its features, beyond the ubiquitous general ledger and double-entry bookkeeping support, include invoicing with quotes, bank reconciliation, purchase order and expense management, tax management, and it is mobile-accessible. Xero integrates with over 800 third-party applications, covering everything from inventory and logistics to cash flow, project management, customer relationship management, and e-commerce.

The product is sold by subscription (a distribution model commonly known as software as a service or SaaS) requiring the payment of a monthly fee. This charge is proportionate to the number (and type) of company entities managed by the subscriber. The lowest tiered pricing option is the $9 per month Starter pack, which supports unlimited users but a limited number of transactions. The $30 Standard pack breaks open usage limits and adds e-filing and payroll options. The $70 Premium package doubles the number of supported employees on payroll from 5 to 10, and supports multiple currencies.

Xero was much more user-friendly than the MYOB products. It was also totally online which suited each of our multinational workforces. Later MYOB developed a totally online product but by that time we had moved. To be honest there’s not a lot else in that space in New Zealand. Your next step up is accounting software written for accounting firms e.g. CCH iFirm.

Personally, I always hated QuickBooks. I'm sure the online/cloud version is a lot different than the older desktop software, but I never found it to be easy to use and my books were always out of sync. Wave [Accounting] was the first Saas accounting software I tried, but I didn't feel like it was ready for small businesses. That's when I found Xero. For the most part, Xero does what I need it to do and most importantly it keeps my books in sync with what is actually happening in my bank and credit accounts.

The ease of use and feature sets are miles apart from the competition. The alternatives that I have compared Xero with are just years away from dozens of features which makes a user's life much easier. The competition's localizations are still very far apart, and the terminologies vary very much from local accounting practices, too.

The ease of use is the best function of Xero! I can't believe how easy it is. The guesswork and errors QuickBooks Online causes is ridiculous. Many of us have just learned to live with it, but once you try Xero, it's hard to go back.

Xero has a much easier, user-friendly interface for ease of use in comparison to the above software and also saves time with day-to-day processing, payables, visibility on items due or requiring attention and the payroll is far easier to use. You can view previous pay runs and figures without needing to rely on reports and specific dates. It is easy to edit items and payroll. Setup of employees is easy.

Xero could be slightly more expensive compared to these products but to me, Xero is the most user-friendly platform. It is very easy to use. Their support page and email support are also great. Apart from the platform, Xero has lots of integrations with other software providers which enables to sync various dates like payroll, sales, and inventory.

MYOB certainly has its place in the industry and don't personally feel you could have one without the other. They both hold strong in the accounting software field and depending on client needs, varies my response to which one 'stacks up' better for that individual business. Having multiple options helps keep the providers on the feet to improve and release updates to provide better services to the user.

Xero was the first cloud-based accounting software, so we've always stuck with them. Quickbooks seems to be the only real competitor at least for eCommerce-based companies. The other options - Freshbooks, Wave, Zoho - seem to only be good for very, very basic service-based businesses. But it's been a while since I reviewed the options. I know Quickbooks and Xero are both acquiring a lot of complimentary software so I expect features to grow fast and impressively from here.

Xero is for larger organisations that need (for example) payroll, international transactions, etc. It is by far the best we have used but it is not the most simple nor the least expensive, so you need to make a decision about if you need their services or whether a simpler system may be more suited.

Xero features have a subset of the features QuickBooks Online has. Since Accrualify integrates with multiple ERP systems, we have integrated with both Xero and Quickbooks. Xero is ERP for small businesses and it really fulfills their needs to the full extent. It has good support and community around it.

Xero is more cost-effective and seems to be easier in terms of set-up and ongoing administration. The design and layout of Xero are much simpler and easier on the eyes than QuickBooks. Given the size of our organization, which is quite small, we feel Xero is capable of meeting our needs.

Xero captures all data on one platform with seamless integration with other apps such as EFT systems, CRM, jobflow, etc. Xero processes faster than any other app and has better support systems and user manuals than other products. The price of Xero is very competitive based on comparison to other products.
