Adobe Target

1. We changed ship dates on individual product pages depending on customer location so they would have an accurate timeline for their orders. This really helped lower our volume of customer service calls on tracking orders.2. We have stores as well as an online presence. With Target we were able to advertise sales on b-stock items from our warehouse to our local customers without letting those that live outside a certain radius see the promo.3. If your marketing team doesn't have a tech background this software has a steep learning curve. There is quite a bit of manual configuration required. The image carousel is one example that we struggled with.

Optimizely

This tool is really robust. It is great for mid to large companies with a marketing budget. This is not going to be friendly for bootstrapped small businesses or startup. They really need to change that, because who better to use this tool than a startup to determine their messaging through testing? This is a fundamentally awesome tool for A/B testing messages and for personalization. Also, determining if a feature that you are purchasing is a good feature for your customers or a bad one. Overall, I would give Optimzely a B+/A-. I really want this for my small clients. It kicks ass.

Pros

  • Test & Target is an excellent means to understand and quantify any user experience solutions your business needs to achieve.
  • Large scale tests combined with incremental changes will whip your web properties into shape. You will better understand your customers, as well as your success metrics. In the scope of a campaign, you can better understand the behavior of your audience by setting up specific success metrics (i.e. clicks on specific nav items, white paper downloads, page landings, etc.) alongside your primary conversions (i.e. form fill, purchase, application, etc.)
  • Test & Target is an excellent solution for directing traffic to the appropriate web properties. By targeting specific users, you will have the ability to set up parameters which determine the content which you want the customer to view.
  • Test & Target undergoes product updates on a regular basis, making its capabilities more robust. You must be analytic AND creative to use Test & Target to its fullest potential.

  • Quickly and easily set up new A/B tests. Some tests can be completed in only a few minutes.
  • A robust results engine. It automatically creates segments based off URL parameters and other common criteria (new vs returning) in addition to predefined criteria you set up.
  • The support of the Optimizely implementation team and customer care is fantastic. Optimizely easily ranks as one of our best third party software vendors. They provide not just knowledge of how to use the tool, but how to build a culture around testing and experimentation within your company.
  • Acts as a great lightweight content management system for making temporary changes. We use Optimizely to make changes for 100% of traffic for controlling scheduled promotions and also bug fix patches while waiting for permanent fixes.

Cons

  • From the development standpoint, tests are not any easier to set up than they would be manually. They actually are more complicated and provide more work to our development team.
  • The software is extremely expensive. You cannot segment your tests or campaigns by geo-targeting, for example, unless you pay extra for that portion of the package.
  • Customer service was easy to get into contact with, but your consulting time with them is very limited, and they weren't always knowledgeable about the issues you needed help with.
  • The software is mainly centered around the "Target" portion of the product (I would say about 75% of the product is devoted to this). Once testing completes, there are many options to push your winning campaigns live and target them to specific segments. Unfortunately this adds to the expense of the software; you pay by impressions. We also use an external ad display software. For these reasons, we did not use any of the targeting portion of the product, which left 75% of it unusable.
  • Test results are real-time, but we found they weren't always accurate. For example, when we would implement the winning campaign from a test, we often found no drastic improvement in conversion, or sometimes it even converted worse.

  • Geo-targeting for tests does not allow you to use ZIP Codes.
  • URL targeting does not have a mass upload option for lists of unrelated URLs. It does have substring and regular expression matches that cover most other needs.
  • The preview feature rarely works as expected. We run tests on a dedicated testing environment to preview and do QA.

It is unlikely that the business will discontinue its use of Adobe Test & Target, as so many of the company's resources have gone into this product such as training individuals and developing a relationship with Adobe. Their technical support is great and the service they provide us is invaluable. It has become the backbone of the marketing department

Web interface is nearly always available. Javascript snippet (which actually runs the test) is distributed on a CDN for near-constant availability.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target8.1
Based on 3 answers
The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Ensure that documentation is thorough and detailed. Make no assumptions that IT or developers know why they are doing what you're asking them to do, and provide detailed instructions to them.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Test & Target is far superior to these other solutions, but is really meant for a more advanced company. Optimizely is better for a startup because of price point and ease of use.
Laci Long profile photo
Prior to Optimizely, we used Test & Target (now Adobe, formerly Omniture and before that, Offermatica). Optimizely is better in every way. It's much easier to use (interface), and it's MUCH easier to have tests run since it requires just one code snippet (where T&T often requires separate code for each test, meaning getting development/engineering involved much more often). We are able to run MORE tests and be much more efficient with Optimizely. We always had problems trying to set up true conversion tests with T&T, since we could track click goals but never 'submission' goals. We worked with T&T support/consultants and still could not manage to get tests working like we wanted. With Optimizely this was a snap. The support team is heads and shoulders better than T&T/Adobe - SO very knowledgeable, and very easy and fun/flexible to work with.

Return on Investment

  • We've seen a number of positive impacts with our clients from increased orders and revenue to improved site satisfaction and user experience.
No photo available
  • Positive: ROI is high. We started seeing results based on A/B testing within a month and with personalization within two months.
  • Negative: While it is easy to use and implement, there is a learning curve that requires testing and some reading/video watching to full utilize the tool.
  • Negative: Our mobile performance did see a slight dip in traffic and increase in bounce rate as we encountered glitches on mobile.
