Adobe Target

1. We changed ship dates on individual product pages depending on customer location so they would have an accurate timeline for their orders. This really helped lower our volume of customer service calls on tracking orders.2. We have stores as well as an online presence. With Target we were able to advertise sales on b-stock items from our warehouse to our local customers without letting those that live outside a certain radius see the promo.3. If your marketing team doesn't have a tech background this software has a steep learning curve. There is quite a bit of manual configuration required. The image carousel is one example that we struggled with.

Pros

Adobe Target

  • Advanced targeting capabilities - TnT allows you to write your own JavaScript/Rhino code in situations when the out-of-the-box features aren't enough.
  • Integration with SiteCatalyst - test data is pushed into SiteCatalyst for comprehensive reporting.
  • Rapid test creation - this can be achieved via "local" HTML offers, redirects or referencing AEM/CQ5 components.

Optimizely

  • A/B testing on-the-fly to measure multiple metrics efficiently.
  • Easy implementation and reporting features makes beginning tests and tracking progress easy.
  • A large database of resources to help those new to optimization set up their tests and expand their ability to use the software effectively.

Cons

Adobe Target

  • Documentation - the current docs are fine for the basics but when you want to do the advanced stuff it sucks and Client Care aren't that helpful with the tricky questions.
  • Standard - the new 'Standard' WYSIWYG version of TnT is very new so I'll be kind however it's full of bugs and unusable - hopefully this will be fixed soon as it looks to have a lot of potential.
  • QAing your tests - the Onsite feature has never worked properly in all the time I have used it. I've been told by people at Adobe not to use the feature.

Optimizely

  • Optimizely does not support the use of alternative algorithms for judging experiment winners such as those of the "bandit" and "adaptive" nature. I can only imagine that doing this would be highly complex, but the ability to select different algorithms could be killer and a true differentiator. I know of no other optimization software vendor that provides algorithmic choices for judging experiment performance.
  • Optimizely is not yet able to ingest and segment off of more advanced and / or custom data sources such as your own CRM data, weather and census data, data from re-targeters like BlueKai, and other fancy data sets that some of the other major players have. There are ways to build work arounds via their segment API and custom targeting variables, but it would be nice if more advanced, pre-built segmentation conditions were included in the product.
  • The integration with Google Analytics, while extremely easy to set-up, leaves a bit to be desired. Its dependent on Custom Variable slots of which you only get 5 if you are not GA Premium (most aren't), and it does things with visitor scope that make repeat visit conversion tracking challenging to do over the course of an experiment without custom Google Analytics JS code to manually set GA visitor scope. That said, there are also work arounds for this as well.
  • There's no experiment version control. You'll often find yourself having to hard refresh while editing variations within an experiment without saving to revert your changes. Not the end of the world because there is this and other work arounds, but it's a nice to have. Again, it's important to point out that few have others have this capability.

Once you get started with your testing program, you realize that it is necessary to continue. You must keep optimizing in order to remain a vital competitor in today's marketing world. Even if you're not using Test & Target or any other user experience testing software, you ought to be performing comparison tests on your own, simply by routing your audience to different experiences and quantifying the aggregate of the results.

Overall it it one of the best if not the best tool in the market. It has all the features we need and seems to be growing functionality so that there is a future with them as we grow our needs. The only issue could be price increases that we keep an eye on.

In-Person Training

Adobe Target

Adobe Target 8.1

The instructor that came to train us was awesome and this training was very useful. I would recommend it for anyone who is going to be using this software. I only mark it lower because it is an added expense to an already expensive product, and a lot of the training covered the "Target" portion of the software (which again, we didn't use)

Online Training

Adobe Target 6.1

The training was very easy to understand, however it would have been more useful to my development team than me. It was also primarily over-the-phone, which is never as easy to follow as in-person. We ended up scheduling and paying for an in-person training session to supplement the online/phone training because it wasn't helpful enough.

Optimizely offers configuration options for different website setups - be sure to use a snippet that is consistent with your website design. For example, the Optimizely snippet can include full or trimmed copies of the jQuery Javascript library (which it needs to function), but this doesn't need to be enabled if you already have jQuery on your website.

Alternatives Considered

Adobe Target

We have looked at Optimizely but at this point are sticking with Test & Target. We like the integration it has with our Analytics tools such as Ad Hoc and SiteCatalyst. Also, we feel that Adobe has some interesting products that we would like to dig into in the future such as Audience Manager.

Optimizely

Honestly Optimizely is so much better then everything else, the only one that compares is Google Optimize, but it wasn't in this list. I don't think the others are worth while, as the data you get back and the responsiveness/smartness of the tests are not near as good as what we have historically found with Optimizely.

Return on Investment

Adobe Target

  • The quantifiable results of each campaign are reflected in the lift and confidence. Within each campaign, you have the ability to tie a dollar amount to to each conversion metric, in order to monetarily understand the successes and project the benefits of implementation over a period of time.
  • Within each campaign you can set up any number of success metrics, in the interest of understanding the behavior of your audience for each experience. But you will usually want to optimize for a specific conversion and move forward with the implementation based on the test results.
  • As a conversion optimization specialist in the field of education management, my team was tasked primarily with lead generation. Test & Target helped our marketing team better understand the behavior of our customers, informing our user experience decisions and creating more satisfying experiences for our audience.

  • Testing has helped us increase conversion rates substantially and Optimizely has made that process a lot easier.
