What is Basecamp?

Basecamp is a web-based project-management tool developed by 37signals in Chicago and launched in 2004. The Ruby on Rails framework was extracted from the Basecamp project.

Basecamp offers features standard to project management platforms, including to-do lists, wiki-style web-based text documents, milestone management, file sharing, time tracking and a calendar, and a messaging system. Mobile accessibility is supported. Notably, it supports unlimited users. It also offers integration with 37signals' own Campfire product, which expands the group messaging functionality of the core platform. Customization, accessibility, and functionality are extended further by the broad range of apps available for free from 3rd parties. A 2-month free trial is available. Pricing is dependent upon space requirements and the number of concurrent projects, not the number of users.

Community Insights

TrustRadius Insights are summaries of user sentiment data from TrustRadius reviews and, when necessary, 3rd-party data sources. Have feedback on this content? Let us know!

Based on user reviews, here are the three most common recommendations for Basecamp:

  1. Learn and Utilize Basecamp's Features: Users recommend taking the time to learn about all of Basecamp's features and functions. They suggest getting training or working with someone experienced in Basecamp to fully utilize the platform. This recommendation helps users make the most out of their Basecamp experience.

  2. Set Up a Standardized System: Many users suggest setting up a system or process that everyone can follow when using Basecamp. This recommendation helps to ensure consistency and streamline project management within teams.

  3. Consider Other Tools for Advanced Functionalities: While users find Basecamp handy for organizing projects, offering instructions and feedback, some reviewers suggest using a more advanced tool, like Monday.com, for large teams collaborating on projects. They advise evaluating additional functionalities and comparing prices before deciding on Basecamp.

Overall, users recommend considering Basecamp as a low-cost option for small teams with straightforward projects. It is recommended for organizing projects, managing workflows, facilitating team cooperation, linking departments, coordinating tasks, and storing data. However, users caution against using it for purposes other than its intended use and highlight that compared to more advanced tools, it might seem basic and limited in benefits. It is also suggested to stay updated with appropriate titles and efficiently organize projects while using Basecamp. Additionally, Google Drive is recommended for file management purposes.

  • It has allowed us to be more efficient and communicative in our product development processes.
  • It helps our main story tracking tool to be cleaner, and contain more final versions of features and the user stories needed to build them.
  • It is the main way we communicate with our offshore development vendor, and it facilitates those conversations very well which makes our teams closer and more productive.

  • More efficient. Since we're able to rely on Basecamp for all of our comps and client feedback, its allowed us to streamline our process and focus more on our actual work.
  • Time management. With the use of milestones, our department can easily see what tasks we need to complete and when, so that the project is completed on time.
  • Better communication. There are a lot of tools within Basecamp to encourage communication with our projects. We've been fully remote since March 2020 and basecamp has been our main source of communication on projects, with nothing falling through the cracks.

  • Basecamp Personal offering includes 20 users which allows you to run the platform free of charge on an unlimited basis for a small to medium size team
  • Paid-for version allows unlimited users at a very cost-effective price and offers substantial value for money versus the market competition
  • Being able to consolidate all of our project collaboration activity into a single platform means the overall cost of ownership has dropped significantly since adopting Basecamp
  • The ease and speed in which users can be onboarded has meant the ramp-up time for new users has been minimal
  • The ability to add external stakeholders easily has allowed us to remove previously existing performance bottlenecks when engaging with our vendors and external clients

  • There's no direct ROI from Basecamp, but certainly using Basecamp or any other project management software will result in less time being wasted and tasks not falling through the cracks which, could result in unnecessary expenses or in lost revenue from tasks not being completed.

  • Being able to manage our projects keeps us focused and on task, helping move projects to completion so we can deliver for--and keep--clients
  • Basecamp likely takes the place of multiple tools if we were to buy them separately, so it saves money there too
  • Basecamp is a great tool for hiring/training as well, as we can be very organized as we level up our employees

  • The negative impact is that everyone who has access gets every communication (too many notifications), whether they are implicated in the matter or not.
  • You see everyone's comments.
  • Very efficient for an organization who wants to micromanage.

  • Basecamp has allowed our specific departments to centrally manage many projects instead of using a variety of different systems.
  • The software has given us the ability to move a large amount of documentation to the cloud instead of emailing or printing.

  • Breaking out projects into tasks, and assigning them to the right person, has helped eliminate tasks falling through the cracks and finding out too late that something was not completed.
  • Time is money and time management is money management -- being able to save time with good project management software helps save money and improves ROI.

  • Tasks and deadlines can get lost when you have a lot of concurrent projects. Basecamp helps prevent these things from getting lost.
  • I'm not sure you can tie a dollar amount to what BC did, but it did help us move through our client service processes in routine fashion, meaning we could always tell what we've done and what still needed to do at a mere glance.
  • I do wonder if BC could have been better integrated with some of our other processes including work email, timesheets, accounting software, etc. BC was more of a standalone dashboard for client related tasks and perhaps it could have been more.

  • It is very easy to set up the tool and get the ground running.
  • It is the most cost effective collaboration tool, we found in the market.
  • No need to depend on the IT department, most things can be done by the end users.
