Act-On

Act-On is at the moment very much an SME platform, however it it moving in the right direction with its recent overhauls e.g. email and landing page creation, data studio and multiple lead scoring.

HubSpot

I think HubSpot works well for small- to medium-sized businesses. It has a comprehensive set of tools that can run much of the sales and marketing automation that is needed for this size of business. I'm not as familiar with Marketo, Eloqua, and Pardot and other marketing automation platforms, but I like the value I get out from HubSpot. I also like all of the implementation partners that HubSpot works with who have been able to come in and help us with our marketing.

Pros

  • Lead nurturing
  • Marketing list segmentation
  • Providing an insight into user behaviour, allowing for a more granular analysis of your current prospects
  • Automation: you are able to use workflows to move leads further down the sales cycle without having to manage it manually.
  • Blog/Email Optimization: allows users to optimize their blog posts for SEO and their emails for an increased open and click rate.
  • Content Creation: it is so easy to post blogs, landing pages and thank you pages with ease, while making them look effective and professional.

Cons

  • More training - There are features I haven't used, due to lack of knowing how to use them. The team has offered to train me on these, I just need to take them up on the offer!
  • Email lists - Sometimes if I remove an opt-out from one list, they are still included in another list. This can just be a source of time-consumption as I have to go find where else the contact is in our account.
  • HubSpot has a sales CRM that has business calling. However, it's not as tightly integrated with contacts and workflows as it could be. For example, you can't add that you called a contact or need to in a workflow. Also you can't use the smart lists on the marketing side to create call lists automatically.
  • There's no way for account admins to make changes to the individual settings of an account holder. Sometimes a member of our sales team will need to change their settings, and it would be easier if I could go in directly and do so. Rather, I have to walk them through how to do it or go over to them and have them login to get access.
• There are some restrictions on design elements that make it harder to keep a consistent look with our overall brand image. For example, while there are social sharing options, there's no way to change out the style and icons used for social sharing elements in emails and landing pages.

There is no other provider in the segment that does what they do at the price they charge, and their support team is great. My contact often checks in with me, and I think that they have really taken a stake in making sure that my company and my business succeeds. I often think of them as friends vs. business collaborators.

Because I will never leave HubSpot, if they keep developing the system in the direction they are now

Usability

It's good, but not quite brilliant. Some parts of the interface are still a bit outdated. The product has been evolving very fast, though, and I believe in a few months it will be up there with the best of them, interface wise as well.

We made a decision as an agency to only work with Hubspot. The software is easy to work with, and the support is very good

With all the new features in HubSpot, the system can get a tad slow sometimes... That said, most of the time it is lightning fast and I have no problems. Because most of the integrations are API, they silently work in the background. I have not had trouble with lag due to HubSpot integration

Support

I can't say enough times how wonderful HubSpot's support team is. I have been lucky to have some really complicated issues resolved and pretty darn fast too. I push their support team pretty hard, but they seem to keep answering my questions ;) Thanks HubSpot!

In-Person Training

I did the 2-day classroom at HubSpot's corporate office in Cambridge. First off, it was amazing to see their corporate office in general. They have such a cool office environment. But it was also great to have the ability to learn in a workshop format with other HubSpot users and meet my Account Manager/ Inbound Marketing Consultant in person.

Online Training

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

I started the HubSpot Academy and I did the online classes to get inbound certified long before purchasing the platform. The format is pretty simple: watch videos, do some workshopping, and then take a test to become certified. The classes are very informative and generally do not take too long to complete. Also, part of your implementation fee includes an Inbound Marketing Consultant who helps set up your first campaigns.

The training I received was well worth the time. I had used other systems previously (Pardot & Act-On) and didn't have a dedicated resource to get up and running. It makes a big difference to have access to someone when you have more complex questions to ask. I think I put the team up to a challenge often times, but 99% of the time they had a solution!

Alternatives Considered

Compared to SharpSpring, Act-On has it's act together. SharpSpring is obviously a value tool in comparison. Our major issue with SharpSpring was Salesforce integration; we constantly had issues with leads being re-uploaded, data changing or not changing when it was supposed to, or many other syncing issues that caused many headaches and a lot of clean-up time. I did prefer SharpSpring's anonymous visitor tracking and e-mail creation, but it simply wasn't worth the discounted price to deal with the headaches. The ease of setting up automation and integrating it with Salesforce made Act-On 100% worth the upgrade, and I wish we hadn't spent a few months trying to make something else work for us.
I had just started with the company and they were using Eloqua. We researched Hubspot and found that it was going to cost us less, be easier to use and give us a lot more functionality than what we were paying for Eloqua. Hubspot is perfect for our database size where Eloqua is set for larger companies.

While HubSpot initially, seven years ago, seemed built for SMBs it appears they have scaled their solution for larger enterprises. I do not have experience sending out 10 million-plus emails per month so I don't know how HubSpot would handle that. However, I do know that some other marketing automation platforms have had trouble with such scale. As such, I suggest HubSpot have one of it's enterprise customers share data on the length of time it takes to send out 1 million emails. Are we talking minutes, hours or days? Then decide what's right for you based on your business needs.

Return on Investment

  • Increased lead conversion efficiency
  • Increased output of marketing e-mails
  • Flawless integration with sales CRM; no mis-matched information or confusing leads for our Sales team
  • Increased lead conversion
  • Greater opportunities from organic leads
  • Increased efficiency with the automation abilities
