BC in a nutshell!

Our main concern is to show previews of our products since they are fully customized. We were able to partner with a company that offers immediate online previews using their app and it worked pretty well for us with BC platform. We do have a long way to go until the process is smooth and easy.

Our online business started out small with only a few orders a month in the first year. As we have grown, Bigcommerce has been able to offer us more to help us keep up with that growth and have reached out to us when they have new upgrades or testing new features that we may not be aware of.

We have over 100,000 SKUs, and have not come across any technical reason why we wouldn't be able to implement all of them into BigCommerce. Some are quite complicated, with multiple products or customization options, and logistically challenging (trying to deliver a 500-tonne product to a small island off the coast of Scotland challenging), but the BigCommerce service is able to make these relatively easy for us.
The API is one of the biggest features in being able to scale up operations, either through linking ERP systems (such as SAP), automated inventory management, or powering our customer app. We've yet to come across something that stops us doing anything.

BigCommerce needs to spend more time on making it easier for admins to work on a product. Bulk importing is not always an option as it does not trigger integration with Square, so any new products created on an import do not synch unless manual synch is started. On catalogs greater than 5000 SKU's, this takes a LONG time. Also, product import really needs to be improved to a single primary key and relationship fields for products and their SKU variations. I shouldn't have to remember there are a minimum of 6 fields to include on import. It should be product ID or SKU, then any other field, so if I want to change one field, I only need to download two fields if I want. The fact I have to keep the downloaded spreadsheet in the exact same order or I will upset all my product variants is insane. It would be helpful to be able to sort the spreadsheet any way I want, but is simply not possible the way it is currently set up. if each SKU had a relationship field relating back to the Parent Product, there would be no issue.

As our sales continue to grow, we haven't had any issues with our BigCommerce store. I also know there are many companies with much larger product catalogs and/or higher sales that are on the BigCommerce platform. 24 hour support has been great with any potential issues we may have. The tech staff is great!

The product integrates well with other systems which makes it great. Many of the internal features such as the existing CRM system are functional enough for the average user to grow the business. My biggest concern is the current inventory management system. With a lack of inventory adjustment history, auditing can be challenging later. However this problem can be easily resolved by using an external inventory management system and integrating it into the BigCommerce Platform so I don't really think it's a major issue.

I give it a 7 because I do not think BigCommerce has a model for non-commerce businesses. I think they could probably pick up another 3 points if they offered a lower price point plan without all of the capabilities. Then they could get some of those GoDaddy customers and scale up.

If your business stays an e-commerce business, then BigCommerce is a good platform to use. If your business branches out into other ways of selling, like adding a brick & mortar store, then it is not quite sufficient at that stage and at some point you will need to migrate to a different platform.

We could definitely see this platform being used for anywhere between 1 and 1000 employees and still be very capable of handling information in-flow. If we were capable of growing exponentially and we somehow had 200 employees (we currently have 5), this platform would still be VERY useful and helpful with managing all aspects of managing sales/retail.

I run a micro shop with a niche product/community. If I wanted to do what others in the industry are doing, I could easily add more products and inventory but my goal isn't to sell what everyone else is selling, our goal is to offer a one-stop shop and the best solution(s) in that shop, not all of the solutions.

BigCommerce's basic e-commerce store features are limiting, but in theory, you could create your own custom theme to overcome some of its shortcomings. It does allow API integrations so you could connect custom software, but I'm unfamiliar with how deep the API connections go. Being a proprietary platform, there are some limitations about how the store works to be compliant with BigCommerce's online storefront.
