Hotjar is robust and incredibly affordable. It's insane how cheap it is for what it provides. Recordings and heatmaps alone are worth the price tag. Add on the other feedback gathering functionality and it's a really good bargain. It comes at a slight cost at the manual execution of running recordings and heatmaps but it's a small price to pay for a huge discount.

Best value, most bells, and whistles for the price point. When you are a startup, SMB, a lead budget is critical, and Hotjar matches right up with that. They will work with you, teach you how to use the software to get what you need out of it to help your business.

Hotjar provides a lot of functionalities under one roof that are typically available in multiple other software programs. We use it to replace several other products and it's not the best at every single feature, but Hotjar is the best all-around tool, especially for the price.

HotJar was selected for a few reasons:
  • Video Capture - HotJars video capture of user sessions is nothing short of amazing. It is so useful (not to mention cool) to see, in real time, how users interact with our software. It makes our jobs so much easier and more enjoyable to get this type of d
  • User Surveys - The ease and flexibility of surveys we can make available on our website are an awesome tool to get additional data.
  • Simple implementation - Adding a very small amount of code to our website gives us the ability to use all of HotJars features without having to touch our code again.

To be honest, we have only tried Hotjar session recording. I know there are some alternatives but we haven't tried any of them. I think there are none as complete as Hotjar for what you pay (some do heatmaps, other video recording, other polls). And the thing is that all of that is done pretty decent on Hotjar, so I'm not looking for any alternative right now.

No other solution offers the full suite of visitor recording, heatmapping and scroll mapping, polls, surveys, and funnel tracking at such a reasonable price point. Every other solution compromises either on features or price, with many sacrificing on both - fewer features and higher cost. Additionally, Hotjar's support is exceptional in comparison to alternatives, ferreting out bugs and recommending solutions for specific isolated issues on live chat or within 24 hours via email.

I haven't seen a solution that visualizes the user experience and interactions in the way that Hotjar does, creating a video of how each user progressed through our app. Mixpanel and Google Analytics are leaders in the space but we've found the visual elements of Hotjar to be extremely valuable in informing design decisions. In addition to visualization, being able to see where and how users are spending time on each page and where their mouse is tracking can help identify confusion in ways that the others cannot.

  • Heatmaptracker and Mousestats
There aren't many competitors that provide this kind of accurate data. I have listed two other applications that gained my interest due to the cheap pricing point, but I'm definately glad my manager approved the purchase of Hotjar

Hotjar offers a range of tools rather than focus on one functionality. Combining information from heatmaps, website recordings and user questionaries can provide a full picture of user behavior and user motivations that further help to improve the UX and UI. Hotjar was chosen because of the easy interface and usability. Together with an A/B testing tool, it is enough to drive CRO and support marketing and product decision.

The free version of hotjar is still incredibly useful, not severely limited as some other products are. They are also willing to work with you if it is necessary to bill annually, and the full version opens up a lot more specific kinds of targeting for more in depth research and analysis.

GA has a heatmaps feature, but it's buggy - hotspots are often misidentified and out of place, and the interface is clumsy and hard to interpret. It also crashed frequently while I was using - not a great experience. The hotspot identification is also hard to understand as it appears to be based off click %, but the numbers don't add up right - there's no neat '100%' that you know every item adds up to.

When price is taken into account Hotjar doesn't really have anything in the way of competitors. They offer a very unique product package for an incredibly modest price. Heatmaps and recordings combined with the survey feature rolls together a great package.
