I evaluated Eloqua for a large-scale B2B marketing program at a software company. Also considered Marketo and Hubspot. I liked Marketo and Hubspot's usability, feature set and pricing better, but at the time of evaluation they did not have as many references from large programs.

I have used Lawson and other proprietary systems for data management. Eloqua/Oracle offers a total package that has several products for your data management needs.

After being frustrated with my frankensteined lead machine for quite some time, I started seeing more information about marketing automation and content marketing around the web. This led me to identify Marketo and then Eloqua as interesting tools. At some point, I got a call from a sales agent at Marketo. I also requested contact from Eloqua. Apparently they both had me in their systems and had been nurturing me. After learning that fact, I was convinced I needed a marketing automation tool. Marketo probably saw me as a nearly ideal prospect because of my company's profile.

My evaluation process centered around Marketo and Eloqua. Hubspot was written off early because their feature set was thinner than I wanted. Eloqua eventually won out because of their superior support and training services, the Campaign Canvas, the App Cloud, and, honestly, because Marketo's sales agent threw more FUD about the Oracle Acquisition than sold his own product.

We tried Google Content Experiments as an early step into the field of optimisation, but quickly found that there were limitations as to what can be achieved, although for very simple experiments it worked, our needs driven by the complex business model we have, demanded a solution which was more agile and scale-able.

It was simply the most resilient testing tool out there. It offered everything we needed and was able to keep up with the fast paced development process. Others fell over at the result accuracy, their process, the speed of delivery. Also the quality of the team behind the product is a massive factor.

I have no previous MVT experience prior to this role. Personally I'd recommend Maxymiser for the reason that I've been able to pick up the activity and with their assistance move to where this is a vital part of our mix within 18 months. I've found normally adding new items is problematic without having existing skills in place. With Maxymiser we've been able to integrate quickly.

Overall, Eloqua had the most comprehensive solution for our business needs, when working through many of the modules some of the others had a few nice differences, but too many other behaviors or system design would have made it more difficult than using Eloqua. Some had better pricing options but was not worth the risk.

Optimisation tools and capabilities are all very similar. Maxymiser had the best caliber people, they provided real value add with sharing & learning opportunities with other clients, and all they do is optimisation. The tool will also integrate with pretty much anything.

  • HubSpot,Pardot
I currently use a different marketing automation tool at my current employer, but I still really enjoyed using Eloqua. HubSpot's hierarchy and sorting of content, lists, reports, etc. is more intuitive than Eloqua which makes showing new features or processes to the Bus Dev team and Sales guys a little simpler. Pardot's direct syncing with Salesforce is also a little more accurate than either Eloqua or HubSpot, so depending on your company's CRM that's a point of consideration. But Eloqua has really nice, clear reports and is really great for email and other online campaigns and allowing you to keep your corporate design in play to keep your messaging consistent. I enjoyed working with Eloqua previously, and I would enjoy working with it again.

  • Silverpop Engage
I think you could build out a more complete campaign with Eloqua, and that Eloqua will probably be a more complete solution overall than Silverpop. With that said, I like Silverpop's user interface significantly more than Eloqua 9's and find it much more intuitive. This isn't really a fair comparison since I wasn't comparing it to Eloqua 10.

  • Adobe Test and Target,Monetate
I was a power user for Adobe Test and Target in a previous position, and have found that I definitely prefer Maxymiser for pure ease of implementation and setup. No mboxes, no creating parameters that have go to into the code, no having to set up segments in my campaign in order to filter later on. Testing is more streamlined, and test setup and reporting are much faster and more efficient. We're also able to implement a much wider range of campaigns with greater capabilities on the merchandising and segmentation fronts. You do still need to do front end (and sometimes backend) coding, but you're eliminating steps up front and during campaign setup. They also offer the Visual Campaign Builder if you're doing simple testing on a single page - you don't need dev at all to use this tool, and we've had very successful tests using this... it's a great option for those who are comparing with Optimizely, etc... for a solution that doesn't require development. Button and image swaps, copy, even some basic coding adjustments can be made without any dev. This was another great benefit that T&T didn't offer at the time. They also continually update and improve this tool as well, so functionality is excellent.

For Monetate, we evaluated them both initially and at our first renewal. I found that they were about testing second, merchandising first, and they weren't able to give us a working prototype of the type of price testing we would need for our sites. I was also very disappointed by the follow-through of their sales teams... promised feedback and information were never provided leaving me to wonder what their customer service would be like after signing a contract. Between that and the technical gaps, we felt this was not the right fit for us.

Maxymiser just had a far better technical capability, cost was more budget appropriate than some and the quality of the tender process was far and above what we saw from other vendors. The ability to extend our usage of their technologies into other areas was a plus point, as was their data driven approach.

AB Tasty is a great tool and the account management team were excellent. However the tool and technical expertise available for the scale of our business isn't right. They would be great for a small scale site or for marketers looking to make simple changes to their landing pages.
