Painful software "upgrade" in process, overworked payroll and HR employees

We use TriNet for all our US employees to process payroll, for benefits, and for HR support. The reason we went with them is that we were able to get health benefits at a more reasonable cost. We also didn't have any in-house HR at the time.
  • They use their size to get reasonable rates on health insurance.
  • They are up to date on all the payroll taxes
Cons
  • PTO - we aren't able to make adjustments ourselves in the system, it has to be done by someone on their side, and they are not done timely and often not accurately
  • The current software "upgrade" has been going on for months and is amazingly frustrating. We are logged into the Beta site first now, and encouraged to use it, but many things are broken there as they are still working on it. Reports after payroll processing can take more than 24 hours to be available right now. Switching back to the previous site is very slow. I once spent a full 10 minutes on the phone with an employee just to get to the right screen to answer a simple PTO question (I started on the Beta site but it still doesn't show balances for PTO). I updated my boss's 401k on the Beta site, did not receive a confirmation email, and he received an email saying that he had elected zero! I had to defend myself to him with a screenshot from the system showing that the right info was there. He is the Controller and the one who decides which payroll service we use, so not a good thing for TriNet. Has the person in charge of this "upgrade" been fired yet?
TriNet is a good resource for smaller companies for keeping benefit costs down and for HR support. However there are other companies out there providing the same type of service, and with TriNet's current software issues I would recommend looking somewhere else.

TriNet is our HR department, they manage our payroll, employee benefits, leaves, HR issues etc. All employees pick their benefits out on the site, request time off, and can check their payroll with TriNet. The managers use it to approve time off, fill out I9 information for new hires, and such. I am the liaison between TriNet and the employees for issues and I assist payroll with making sure that things are correct in regards of employees that are new, on leave, etc.
  • Giving us a number of options for benefits
  • Has an HR or employee labor expert to help with issues
  • Payroll
Cons
  • The new Beta site still has a lot of bugs, for example when changing someone's pay amount in the Beta site you can't add cents to it, which when doing raises based on a percent happens a lot - I like what the Beta site will be once bugs are fixed.
  • I entered a Rehire at the beginning of May and it went through as active on our end of TriNet Passport, but TriNet didn't have records that he had been rehired, and it took a number of days before it was resolved.
  • Our TriNet reps for HCC and CS aren't always accessible or have the information/answers we need when we contact them. Our new HCC is in Massachusetts and we don't have any locations there. I feel like it would be more helpful to have someone at least in our state, even better if it was our HQ city.
  • Going on leave and return from leave always seems to cause problems for our team.
We are a fairly small company and it's nice to be able to offer our employees a wide selection of insurance options, more than we would have access to as just our company. With ACA our employees would probably be stuck with healthcare.gov options. We don't have to employ full time someone with HR knowledge, but have access to it whenever we do need it. Direct deposit payroll is great and we love the PTO request center.

TriNet pragmatist

TriNet is used for payroll & benefits, PTO tracking and time & attendance. Used by all U.S. based employees. We have offices in Europe and those employees are set as trusted advisers so that they may participate in training offering and manager roles largely for PTO approvals. It provides an additional HR resource for employees to leverage.
  • Payroll process and administration is solid. Very easy to manage.
  • Good integration of benefits and programs with payroll. Health benefit choices, commuter benefits, and 401k seamlessly link from third party sites with individual payroll
  • Good tools available such as paycheck estimator, PTO estimator, mobile app and TriNet marketplace.
Cons
  • New beta site is still buggy.
  • Certain functions take too long to process like running certain reports, or making changes to employee managers
  • Leave of absence processing is a bit confusing
  • Payroll processing for terminated employees (final pay) is perplexing
  • TriNet should absolutely integrate the New York State wage notification in the onboarding phase for a new hire. This should be all electronic, similar to the I9 function
  • A more efficient use of time is enabling a company to push a link to a new hire prior to the first day so that s/he may input much of their information before starting. TriNet should develop this function
It's a good platform for many smaller companies that wish to provide their staff with a wide variety of medical benefit choices at decent premiums. I think that once a company grows in size, it may find that the PEO model is less suitable.

It is used across the whole organization, although I use TriNet the most. We use it for payroll, benefits, PTO, and HR.
  • On all of our touch-points with TriNet, we feel it serves us well. Payroll is smooth and efficient. Our employees are going through Open Enrollment for benefits currently, and the feedback has been very positive.
  • TriNet has been hugely helpful with the HR support. Our client services specialist has been a wealth of knowledge and very responsive.
  • The PTO function for requesting time off and the managing and tracking of it has also been a plus. It is fast and easy to use and replaced our prior manual process.
Cons
  • I think the website has room for improvement. I have been using the new beta site (and I understand it is still in beta) but it is not as intuitive as I would like, and I have had trouble finding some of the information that I need to look up (that I could find much easier on the legacy site). In fact, I have returned to the legacy site on a few occasions because I could not find what I was looking for on the beta.
  • Another area that could improve is during company setup. There were a couple of areas where I felt we made some setup decisions where if I had been provided either more information and/or context, I might have made a different setup choice or been better aware of the ramifications. Being a small business we don't always know what we don't know - so to speak.
TriNet has really helped us. It has enabled us to provide affordable benefits to our employees which enhances our ability to compete for the best talent. The payroll function is very efficient. TriNet has also been a great HR resource for us. We are very happy with our business decision to select TriNet.

TriNet is basically providing HR Operations services and I have used them for employee relations/legal advice as well.
  • Customer Service
  • Benefits
  • Payroll
Cons
  • I do not like the Passport beta website currently. Information is difficult to obtain and is not always accurate.
TriNet is best suited for small companies who cannot afford to operate HR internally
