What is Seismic Learning?

Seismic Learning (formerly Lessonly, acquired by Seismic in August 2021) is training software with an ecosystem of partners, strategy and services that are aligned under the mantra of Do Better Work.

The vendor has worked with over 800 companies to help them train their teams. The vendor says they've learned that the highest performing organizations build their training on the same six pillars:

  • Assess (Gather Needs & Inputs) Listen to people, data, and the market; identify successes and challenges; and accurately assess your sales team's training needs.
  • Plan (Prioritize for Impact) Identify the most essential objectives and outcomes, and intentionally set milestones for creation and delivery.
  • Build (Create Quickly & Collaboratively) Work with teammates at the front lines of the business to develop and iterate on bite-sized training/content.
  • Learn (Meet Learners Where They Are) Push training content to teammates-- anywhere, anytime-- so they can quickly solve problems in their moment of need.
  • Practice (Rehearse, Refine, Repeat) Reinforce skills and information with realistic practice scenarios and receive feedback to fuel improvement.
  • Perform (Doing Better Work) Empower the organization to continuously improve, deliver and quantify results.

Seismic Learning ultimately aims to help organizations to achieve faster onboarding, higher NPS score, more closed deals and a superior customer experience.

Before Lessonly, we used Google, and although our company continues to use Google Drive for other things, when we started to grow, it became apparent that we needed to use a software that was dedicated to providing an online learning platform. Lessonly is affordable and offers great support in addition to simply having the kind of platform tools that we need. It wasn't until recently that we started thinking about having an external use for Lessonly that has caused us to see its weakness there. That said, Lessonly is highly customizable and has otherwise continued to offer the exact toolset we need as our own company grows and scales. They are also continually adding valuable features to their product, and so far there is no real reason to leave the platform.

Lessonly is all around a better fit. Their user-interface is easier to use to create content, they provide access to better tools, and had a much better implementation process. With LearnCore especially, if the content wasn't video-based, it didn't work very well. This led us to spend extra time creating training videos that with Lessonly, could have been much more efficiently created with text, images, practice elements, and/or embedded documents. Also, their content storage has been much more reliable - we haven't lost any content with them!

Lessonly for Learning!

I chose Lessonly because they were local and starting up. They seemed like a good and growing organization. I liked how Lessonly allowed the customization, plan management, content templates, assignment triggers, and ability to help us plan the curriculum. Their teams helped us convert our material to digital formats to help us lessen the burden of change and start up.

Lessonly is just the bee's knees in the LMS space. A lot of the software we trialed had some but not all of the features that Lessonly boasts and promotes. I felt like Lessonly gave us more flexibility in how and what we train on while keeping it within an easy framework to work within. Lessonly also seems small in the sense that they bend over backward for you, but in reality, is a large company that just has that local company feel.

Overall, Lessonly is the best interface I have found for content creation. Others seem to have more gamification and social learning aspects, as well as content curation aspects, which I would like to see from Lessonly. We stay with Lessonly because of its ease of use both as a creator and as a user and because of the ability to make online training interactive through questions, flip cards, gifs, etc.

I felt some of these products had more features than were necessary and needed for our team. Some of them were limited on the number of content creators that were allowed which to me forces you to use one or two people to create content where I would rather see it done by key members of each department.

Our company used Hickory in the past, and Lessonly is way better. From an admin point of view, Lessonly offers user friendly interface, better content, more analytical features, and is easier to use.

This was the fourth LMS evaluation and purchase in my career. I've purchased LMSes in a variety of settings, including a K-12 school, a couple of small high growth companies, and a division of one of the largest technology companies in the world. When it came time to purchase an LMS at my current company (high growth startup), the primary criteria were:
  • Ease of use (drives adoption)
  • Ease of content creation
  • Ease of administration (small enablement team administering the product)
All of the solutions we looked at were pretty good. Lessonly seemed easier to use, and the team at Lessonly was great to work with during the buying process. They've been great to work with as customers as well. The CS team is top notch.

Lessonly was close to the lowest priced option I found but not the lowest. It was super simple to understand during the onboarding which lead us to be able to implement immediately.

We ended up choosing Lessonly because of three things. They were local, their approach to addressing the millennial workforce, and the easy use of their system. Their wining and dining, in the beginning, didn't hurt and Bryce Pierson was a great salesman. We almost didn't choose Lessonly because of the cost but ended up deciding it was a risk we were willing to take. We are hoping it pays off.
