What is Jira Software?

Jira Software is a project management tool software used by agile teams and supports any agile methodology, be it scrum, kanban, or a team's own unique flavor. From agile boards to reports, users can plan, track, and manage agile software development projects. And since not every team works the same way, Jira Software allows teams to customize workflows, permissions, and schemes to match the unique needs of each team.

Jira templates also support use cases in enterprise marketing management, and projects to support operations, design HR, and enterprise marketing management.

With Jira Software, teams are able to:

  • Track versions, features, and progress at a glance
  • Re-prioritize user stories and bugs
  • Estimate stories, adjust sprint scope, check velocity, and re-prioritize issues
  • Estimate, track and report on story points; become more accurate
  • Report on agile metrics to provide real-time, actionable data on team efficiency, quality, and overall performance
  • Integrate with all the tools their dev team is already using, from the rest of the Atlassian suite (Bitbucket, Bamboo, Fisheye, and Crucible) to other popular developer tools on-premise or cloud (e.g., GitHub and Jenkins).
  • Provide greater flexibility to curate which teams have access to which information with sprint and project-level permissions
  • Flexibly tailor Jira tasks and their workflows to a specific team's use case
  • Extend Jira with over 1,800 apps from the Atlassian Marketplace to fit any capability not provided by default

I've used Trello for managing tickets, it's possibly but provides no ability to have backlog features unless you use plug-ins. Plus, once you get a large backlog the page takes a long time to load. Jira is quick and has this all built in.

Redmine is a mess, don't bother. The whole experience is un-user friendly. It took me a moment to even realize how to respond to a ticket. The discussion feature with Jira is very clear and even has ability to respond via email.

Zoho Projects UI is terrible, it has some of the same features as Jira but in the end users grew frustrated with trying to figure out where everything was.

Jira Software is considered perfect when it comes to handling a software team which might need an advanced agile functionality as well as structured workflow wherein Trello could be quick in terms of capturing or sharing the ideas or lists or to-do's. Jira has a better UI and centralized structured approach for accessing the requirements and can be used as a project management tool.
Also as Jira is having a customizable work flow design, is reliable and rob[u]st in terms of add-ons, and has a data center deployment option which can be more beneficial than that of Rally.

Jira Software integrates with other software platforms nearly as well as its competitors, such as Asana or ClickUp. However, it provides more advanced tools than ClickUp and Asana, allowing project managers to see the workload of their team members, manage burndown, and react to blockers that the team members run into.

It provides a good collection of features like dashboard, reports section with all the releases, slippages details. It gives a good estimate of effort added by team members and the quantum of load on them. Its search engine does a great deal of helping with going through old Jiras easily.

Jira Software is a much more robust solution that offers more features than the alternatives. Since our engineering department is also using BitBucket, it makes the choice easy to go with the whole Atlassian suite.

I have used other solutions in the past, but none is close to providing as many features as Jira.

Jira is by far a leader in the industry. Other tools such as Basecamp or Monday are helpful and good, but Jira has most of what the different tools have and even more.

Our teams previously used GitHub, Asana, and Jira Software before we consolidated everything into Jira Software. While some teams still use GitHub for particular development projects, we have found Jira Software to be more well-rounded than the competitors we replaced, and this has cut down on our tech stack costs. Jira Software is also very well known among our new-hire developers, which means decreased onboarding time.

I personally use Trello to keep track of personal stuff and used it as a task management tool for very small development teams/projects, but Jira is a million miles ahead of it regarding a number of options and customizations. I also used Rally on a previous company and although it is a quite complete tool I think Jira offers more options, mostly regarding customizations.

Jira Software works for many development environments, has custom workflows, is friendly, stable, robust, and can be integrated with the most recognized DevOps tools on the market.

Jira Cloud Software is very well priced and the free edition fits most projects with small teams.

Jira is always improving without regression, and you can always move (migrate) old tasks, stories, and issues to a new project.

Each application comes with their advantages. Jira Software is one for the tools famous among our Post Market Surveillance and Engineering teams due to its simple application structure. Provide easy tracking and navigation through the tool which helps with monitoring more effectively. Allows high level customization which changes the user experience.

Jira is easy to use for less technical work professionals, while Azure and GitHub [take] more time to learn how to use effectively. For large firms with multiple business and technology teams collaborating, Jira Software is a great tool for first time Agile users and developers. It is a great tool to introduce professionals to Agile development and to streamline issue tracking for larger user groups.

Having had some experience with Jira Software at a previous organization, we didn't evaluate competitors to Jira. The cost of Jira was low enough that we didn't go through a typical evaluation process prior to jumping in to using Jira for managing technical projects. However, we ultimately found it wanting for the needs of a typical IS department.

Redmine was used at the very beginning when we were a really small team.
Pivotal Tracker was next, and although it has a better UX features, it lacks the ability to manage big projects in parallel (at least back in the days).
Jira is far more flexible for adjustments to our teams' needs in terms of project management of different types.

Pivotal Tracker is a really great product that takes a different approach to project management and display. But Jira just wins out with the customization and more modern look. If you need something a little less flashy then Pivotal Tracker might be for you. But if you want a modern UI with endless customization then Jira is for you.

Trello (free?) is a neat tool for small projects. It can certainly solve a lot of problems for you and keep you organized it's just a bit behind these other two.

Jira [Software] [has] lot of [similar features to Pivotal Tracker].
Many apps are easily integrated with Jira [Software].
Jira [Software] is highly customizable and one can easily attach any other api in it.
Just main thing is that it is lot more complicated than this software but features out stand the drawbacks.

Previously we were tracking all projects requirements/solution under Confluence, now using Jira [Software] we have [split] everything in small user-stories and tracking their deliveries against a Jira Id. Now we are following 2 weeks of release cycles which helps to deliver things faster in market and get their early feedback to correct/optimize in next releases.

We replaced our HP PMM because old fasioned design and inflexible structure. We used HP PPM at least ten years, reporting, task management and project management was not easy. Also intergration to other systems was not easy. And Jira Software well suits to agile teams. Other issue is peformance of PPM, Jira Software is much faster than PPM.

Haven't evaluated Jira against any other product. To me it's the market leader and must use product.
It has all those features which are needed as in adding/ reducing sprints, moving tickets among various status, tagging people whom we want to take over the work and stakeholders can also check the status of thier tasks.
