What is Paycom?

For 25 years, Paycom Software, Inc. (NYSE:PAYC) has offered businesses and their employees HR and payroll technology that provides direct access to their data. Paycom's Beti® technology enables employees to do their own payroll, so they are guided to find and fix costly errors before payroll submission. From onboarding and benefits enrollment to talent management, Paycom’s software streamlines processes, and gives employees access to their own HR information. Paycom can now serve businesses of all sizes in the U.S. and internationally.

Paycom states they have approximately 36,820 clients across the United States (as of Dec. 31, 2023), up 1% from the prior year. On April 15, 2014, Paycom became a public company with its shares opening for trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol PAYC. In early 2020, the company joined the S&P 500.

Paycom is our comprehensive payroll and benefits platform, used for processes such as payroll management, benefits enrollment and tracking, employee time card management, paid time off scheduling and approvals, employ review writing and tracking, tax form distribution, and much more. Through the Paycom online portal and app, our employees are easily able to access and manage their entire year-over-year employment cycle. We especially appreciate the ease of access to important employment documents, such as pay stubs, tax reporting, and insurance benefits.

Paycom is well suited, especially for benefits enrollment. We've been able to easily integrate our insurance enrollment carriers with Paycom to build out a guided, step-by-step enrollment process that really helps our employees to ensure they are selecting the plan that is right for them and including all of the correct, pertinent information upon their enrollment. Paycom is also great for payroll and tax reporting, especially for our employees, as they are able to easily access current and historical pay stubs and W2 information to provide when needed.

I use Paycom to manage my paychecks, benefits, time off and calendar scheduling, and any important documents that are managed through HR. Everything I need to see for all of my accounts, including retirement and paychecks and taxes is all in one platform. For hourly employees, we also use Paycom to manage timesheets and clock in and out.

  • Some of the features are hidden behind too many menus.
  • Ability to customize the home screen would be ideal.
  • Would like to integrate my retirement account from inside the portal itself.
I have no other software comparison for managing these items, like payroll and time off, but it seems to be constantly improving. I think for large companies it is very easy for HR and accounting/payroll departments to centralize info for employees and assign them tasks like electing benefits. It is easy for managers to work with those they supervise through the platform. It might be too much of a tool for smaller companies or organizations that don't require all of the features.

We use Paycom for payroll direct deposit services, and we're implementing it for our franchise locations as we expand nationwide. Their product should address the timely task of processing payroll manually, however, the last two [what I feel have been] daunting and exhausting months [that] we've dealt with them they've removed auto-debit, and [in my experience] require the following to process payroll: -Wire transfer of the funds (Must complete one every week and yes you're required to eat the wire fee of $35 each time) -Proof of funds after the wire is submitted (They require a screenshot that you actually have money in the account) -Ask you to submit this wire transfer 2 days prior to the check date before 2:00 pm MTN time. However, they cannot guarantee 24 hour transfer times, which then they cancel your payroll and sell you on a same-day wire transfer if they don't receive your transfer before 2 pm. (They charge $500 for same-day transfers). I'm not saying they're all bad, the customer onboarding team was smooth, but [in my opinion] it ends there. If you want exceptional customer support and seamless payroll, [I believe you should] look elsewhere.

I use Paycom as a user. I enter my timesheet and also manage my employee's time and their performance. Prior to Paycom, we used ADP but the services and software were costly and more than we needed. With Paycom we have been able to change our personnel files and management from hardcopy to electronic, with the employee being able to access their official personnel records at any time.

Paycom is well suited if your goal is to enable your staff to enter their timesheets while on the go. However, if you have multiple grants that change frequently it is very hard to update those changes so that staff can enter their timesheets accurately. I don't know whether this issue is a Paycom functionality issue or our internal staff not having the skill or ability to make these changes. So, if you are considering this software find out if you need internal IT trained staff to manage the data system or whether a layperson can keep it up to date

Paycom is used within our organization for both payroll management, benefits management, documentation, and organization of all employee-related interactions, coaching sessions, regular one-on-ones, and monthly/quarterly/annual performance reviews. We also use Paycom for the maintenance of all personnel files and for documenting and tracking personal and professional goals for all employees. Paycom has been a vital addition to our company's internal software suite, as it has greatly helped to keep all personnel documentation and minutes of interactions organized in one place. Paycom provides a host of integrated features that allow for flexibility in its use, as well as streamlining engagement with employees from a human resources perspective, which is certainly useful for businesses with 500 employees or more.

Paycom is very well suited for keeping all personnel files well organized, although logging interactions and completing performance reviews in the format provided is a bit clunky. Paycom would be appropriately used when navigating an employee's history with the company to gauge future development or performance history for future conversations and potential approval for an increase in pay. Paycom would not be well suited for much smaller companies (say, 200 employees or less), as its more robust features may be a little overwhelming, or many left unused.

Paycom is well suited for small and large companies for a one-stop-shop system. There are a lot of features and benefits to using Paycom. It is easy for a user to interface and easy and simple for all of our employees to use as well. We love the Paycom on the Go mobile app for ease of everything for our employees.

  • Please consider incorporating training videos into the tool itself such as a library for new users.
  • Differentiate records for temporary employees versus FT employees vs PT employees; by this, I am recommending different user interfaces based on "role." Right now, I am only familiar with "client" and "employee" role-access points but within "employee" there are many important subcategories. Thank you for your consideration.
I really like working with Pay-Com for the purpose of reviewing time-cards, employee records, applicant tracking. I think it is a logically organized, and efficient, system for time-card management, in particular. I think it's a great resource in terms of HRIS information. I think that the tool could be further improved upon by additional differentiation of categories of employees as well as incorporating more self-training videos, or 1 minute references related to several categories and those trainings could be available at the point of login.

My organization uses Paycom for time and attendance, payroll, recruitment, benefits, training, expense reimbursement, surveys, and performance management. Paycom allows our employees to access and make changes to their own information online or on the Paycom app. The system is easy to use and has created efficiencies in our recruiting, new employee onboarding, and benefits administration processes to name a few. Paycom allows our managers to focus their time on the business.
  • Employee Time off Requests. My managers love that they can approve time off requests from an email. All the relevant information to make a decision about approving an employee's time off request is listed in the email.
  • The sales representative you work with during the RFP process is with you during the implementation process. They don't sell you a product and move on once the deal is done. I have converted three companies to Paycom because of the functionality of the system and my relationship with my sales representative. Paycom doesn't make promises they can't deliver.
  • I love that when I call Paycom I get a real person not a phone tree system. My dedicated specialist is an extension of my HR Team. And if my dedicated specialist is not available, another capable representative is. The right-hand talks to the left hand in this organization. With previous HRIS providers that were not the case.
  • The online user manuals are very helpful and very good reference material. If I'm working after normal business hours and I'm trying to figure out how to do something in Paycom I can usually pull up an online user manual to figure it out.
  • The expense management module is difficult to use. Often times managers miss expenses leaving the employee to follow up with the status of a reimbursement.
  • I wish Paycom offered benefits and compensation benchmarking data to their customers.
  • Each year we create training plans for our employees. I think it would be great to have an area we can customize, like an evaluation plan, for an employee's annual training plan.
  • The survey section of Paycom lacks customization ability like other systems I've used in the past.
Paycom is well suited for any organization that wants an all-in-one solution for their HRIS.

We utilize Paycom across our entire organization. Paycom has allowed us to share information more easily and enhance our reporting capabilities and make real-time decisions. We have been able to increase the efficiency of our organization and streamline many processes that used to be paper-driven. Our payroll processing time and decreased tremendously which has allowed us to focus on other projects.

Paycom allows the centralization in the cloud of all of our employee data. This allows our workforce to have access to data anywhere and at any time in real-time. HRIS System that is utilized for the entire organization for timekeeping, performance management, benefits and other HR actions. HR and Payroll use the system and administer it. Paycom is used daily for employee management, personnel action forms, discipline, coaching, learning, document routing/signature, etc.
  • Personnel Action Forms.
  • Reporting.
  • Document and checklists.
  • Many menus function differently and some return you to the home screen, requiring you start over (ex: goals in performance management).
  • Paycom announces many upgrades and changes but frequently, small but impactful changes, are not announced (ex: changes to report editing and position updates).
  • Workflows are rigid and difficult to administer. Currently most of them (recruitment, PAFs) either required a defined path through the organization by person (which can change frequently) or no path at all, meaning you need to train supervisors. Performance Management is better. The ideal would be to outline a generic path by position, and allow the supervisor/HR to fill in the humans who need to approve.
  • Create a best practices site or space where customers could interact, share best practices and submit ideas. The ideas could be voted upon and Paycom could implement the ones that are determined as best.
  • Two recent Paycom upgrades (Beti, Benefits) cost additional dollars and I think it is poor practice to have enhancements that cost extra, especially when my company pays for almost every module (except the new ones and expense management).
Paycom is easy to use and administer. It may not be suited for large companies that are complex in structure or needs.

Paycom is primarily used by the HR and Accounting departments. Approximately 30% or our employees have downloaded the app on their phones and use it for time off requests, and other tasks that can be taken care of on the app. The majority of our working class population does not use the app which means that we still use paper forms to request time off, and we still make many changes that could be made by the employee.

  • Staying current on legal issues like the special COVID earnings that are required.
  • Would like to see more options when creating a custom report.
  • Clocking in 1 minute after the start of a schedule, takes away half an hour from the employee. We are consistently pushing the clock back one minutes so that employees don't lose that half hour. This only happens on our morning shift; not our Swing Shift.
  • On anniversary dates the system changes the vacation accrual but does not enter the additional lump sum of 40 hours vacation to the employee's account. We go in and enter the lump sum manually.
  • It is difficult to reprogram our time clock bells. Over time, the bell rings 1 or 2 minutes earlier than the actual time.
Support is always available when you need it. The system is great for office use but our employees are slow to download the app and start using it. I am unable to put our Employee Handbook in the required documents for reading, because most employees don't use the app. We have not made it a requirement that all employees use the app. They are accustomed to coming to HR for help or information - which for me and my co-worker is fine. This way we do have some contact with our people and creates an understanding that HR is not a punitive or scary place, but rather a resource when serious situations arise.

We are currently using Paycom across the entire organization for payroll, employee records, and training. We also utilize Paycom for employee onboarding as well as enrollment of benefits. Paycom addresses many problems with accurate timekeeping, payroll reporting, ACA compliance, training records, as well as accurate benefit deductions.
  • Timekeeping is easy to utilize and very employee friendly.
  • Paycom App is wonderful for employees and managers.
  • Training records are kept accurately in employee's profile.
  • Reporting is amazing and very versatile.
  • PTO calendars that are easily printable by managers.
  • Streamlined ability to add notes on hiring candidates profile.
  • More time when starting to use Paycom to go through trainings, all trainings for all products done in a short timeframe and a great deal of information is lost because client is not ready to implement.
I am unsure of any scenario where Paycom would not be well suited as it is a very versatile platform.

We began using Paycom in July 2021. This was supposed to be start of Q3, but Paycom failed to set up our account timely, so the service began on our 3rd payroll run for the quarter. The experience was disastrous, wrought with too many errors to enumerate, so we cancelled after only 2 payroll runs. Our requests for help and complaints received little response. We have a pay-as-you-go worker's compensation payment plan with our insurance carrier. In my opinion they failed to inform us that they would not support that plan, but that we would need to run the WC report ourselves and make the payments on each payroll run. We would have never contracted the service had we known.
Our experience with Paycom was an abomination. Our account was set up with numerous errors resulting in numerous payroll errors for both payrolls that were processed with them. When we switched back to our former provider, the reports for our employees' earnings were incorrect, which resulted in further reporting errors in our employees' paycheck stubs. 2 people resigned over the payroll errors, having lost confidence in our company. I cannot overstate our horrendous experience. DO NOT CONTRACT THIS COMPANY TO PROCESS YOUR PAYROLL.

Paycom is used by our entire organization for all HR/Payroll related tasks. It has streamlined all of our information into one easy to use platform. Previously, we were using a system that did not have nearly as many options. We had to use multiple different platforms and it was inefficient and disorganized. Paycom has helped us become more efficient and organized. Previously, we were tracking many things on paper, such as FMLA, accruals, and performance reviews. Hard copy documents were hard to get signed and keep track of. Paycom allows us to send documents on their platform and it is easy for employees to sign them virtually.

Paycom is one of the easiest systems I have used. In my role, I specifically use it for benefits. Open enrollment was incredibly easy to set up and roll out. Benefit enrollment in Paycom makes it easy for our staff, easy for the administrator and easy for Payroll. Being able to set up all benefit plans in Paycom was a smooth process.

Not well suited for applicant tracking flow. For a global workflow, I can schedule interviews and it sends the candidate the calendar invite, but I cannot attach a zoom link. If I send an offer letter message to a candidate, they do not get a notification letting them know they have an email in the candidate profile.

Best in class customer service and highly responsive. Excellent applicant tracking and accurate payroll processing. Great end of year data. Easy to onboard new hires and start their benefits.

I have asked for and would like one stop shopping for certain regulatory items like tracking the expiration of driver's licenses since it is a requirement of our company to track and this would make it easier.

We use Paycom throughout different departments to ensure a quick and accurate flow of information. It has given us a better understanding of our business throughout it Analytics tools.

  • A favorites menu for most used functions.
This is the easiest payroll processing software I have ever used. The integration between the time clock and the payroll function is seamless. You can even make changes to punches, employee records, and PAF's in the middle of processing a payroll. The information flows directly over to what you are working in without the need to manually change anything!

Paycom is used throughout our 21 locations. All our employees clock in and out, request time off, add comments, enroll in health benefits, print check stubs, verify and change personal information thru their individual employee portal. Managers/Supervisors, additionally, use Manager on the go to approve time off and electronic timesheets.
  • Customer service: knowledgeable, friendly, helpful, no wait time, go the extra step to help solve or answer question.
  • Training: free webinars on wide variety of subjects.
  • Constant update/upgrades: improve (shorten) time doing tasks, implemented without any glitches (seamless).
  • Add more custom fields and allow visibility to managers not just administrator.
  • Include in notification emails for custom fields that have expiration dates the following items: employee name, EE ID#, expiration date, Custom SELECT Field Description.
  • Labor Allocation-location of delivery: all the administrator to change the contact name, using a drop down selection with employees/managers names.
  • Add to advance report writer: reports or flexibility to combine several areas together in one report, i.e. Time and attendance, Payroll, Employee and Benefits.
Wonderful customer service: no wait time, work in teams not just one designated person, quick answers and fast response time to email requests. Great at emailing reminders on upcoming webinars and reports due for review (i.e. ACA, Open Enrollment). Need to improve notification emails that have to do with custom fields expiration dates. They need to include who the notification is for and for what, not just the date.

Paycom is currently used by our business as an HRIS. Implementation went smoother than expected, and system is capable of handling our complex compensation structure, which is hard to do! We receive great customer service and have been happy with the product for the ~1 year that we've been using it.

One area of improvement for Paycom, and a function that I wouldn't particularly recommend is the Background Check Platform. It isn't as robust as other vendors, and didn't prove to be worth having it 'all in one system'.

  • No functionality to "text" candidates via HRIS.
Paycom is a great solution for a midsized company. They can handle complex comp, such as piece-pay which is a huge win. For an all-in-one solution, we've been very happy.
