We use UserTesting to validate product ideas, test our product's usability and iterate on product designs. UserTesting helps us see the usability issues of our product that are otherwise hard to see. We may be biased against our own product, or because we are too familiar it prevents us from seeing these issues. UserTesting also helps us minimize the time spent on usability tests as it enables us to do unmoderated tests with the demographic of our choice.
  • Taking notes with video clips. I can take notes while I am watching a session and I can create clips of UX issues or bugs occurring. This really helps when I share them with other teams.
  • Exporting all your notes. I analyze all usability tests by exporting my notes from UserTesting. I wish I could bulk export multiple tests though.
  • Setting up demographics. This helps me reach out to users who are similar to our audience.
  • Setting up screeners. Some studies require specific audiences (using a specific tool etc.), by setting screeners I can make sure I reached the correct audience.
  • Bulk exporting multiple tests.
  • I believe some contributors are lying on their demographic info. Sometimes when I try to reach native English speakers or another language, I come across users who are not native speakers even though I set up demographics accordingly.
UserTesting is ideal for big companies that work in an agile setting. If you are working in a fast paces environment and need to get some insights fast, UserTesting helps a lot. If you are creative, and know how to ask questions, you would be surprised how fast UserTesting starts to show its value. We are a small team and we try to minimize our work load as much as we can by optimizing our research operations, so making unmoderated tests are very important to us. If you are a small company with limited resources though, it might be expensive. Then, buying multiple tools that cover different areas might actually become more affordable.

I use the tool to understand “why” our numbers for traffic, click rates, customer satisfaction, etc are the way they are and insight into what to do to make improvements. Use cases can range from explaining interactions with a CTA (call to action) button to strategy for how we address a whole market. Biases from leadership are changed when we are able to share real customers sharing how they interact and why in videos. Before the tool, assumptions on what would work were only rhetorical and bias. Now we can provide real, transparent, truthful recommendations which have made dramatic impacts to all areas using the tool for research.
  • Observing how people react to experiences
  • Hearing the emphasis in feelings from interactions
  • Getting quotes from customers to make the case for changes
  • Using the survey to pull out thought, desires, and ideas from customers
  • Pulling the data together for presentations is rough and time consuming. I suggest that user testing perform testing on how we use the tool to organize the research to present to leaders so that additional tool to support this can be made available in the tool.
  • Custom network is clunky and difficult to use. It is not easy to get our customers and target market to sign up. I have to hand-hold them. Sometimes they don’t get the email to sign up. I would like to enter what I already know about them (profiles) into the tool myself and then send the invite for the test.
  • Would like to be able to search all past research on topics through the transcript rather than rely on just my notes.
Great for observing, hearing, and asking. Bad for getting solid opinions unless you had a lot of people for stats. You cannot act on 5 people casually saying, “I like this over that,” because many times the testers just want to finish the test and give false positives.

My team uses UserTesting for qualitative research both unmoderated and moderated. The tool allows us to gain insights from users quickly and efficiently. It saves time on recruitment and the platform makes it easy to analyze data as it provides transcripts and video clips. We use the tool to gain feedback on our current products as well as new ideas/concept.
  • unmoderated or remote product testing
  • high quality participants that give strong and detailed insights
  • quick insights
  • large and diverse recruitment pool
  • qualitative research analyzing tools could be better
  • cost is very high
  • easier collaboration with other team member
UserTesting is really great when you want to get insights on a prototype. You can have participants walk through the prototype and conduct speak out loud so you can hear directly from them on what they like, dislike and any sources of confusion. If you want to be able to probe or have a conversation with users you could recruit through UserTesting but it would like be more efficient and cost saying to use Zoom.

Game changing speed to insight. User Testing allows us to quickly have confidence in our designs and quickly pivot if not meeting our users needs. This saves time not only in the UX team but also when it comes to development. User Testing also allows us to have much richer behaviour data to support the why behind out design thinking.
  • Speed to insight
  • Confidence in design
  • Further integration with other design tools
We use UT in all areas of our design and development process.

We use UserTesting for discovery interviews with users as well as for usability testing.
  • Creating clips and highlight reels of recorded interviews--these really help you "land" the research findings with stakeholders.
  • Capturing a blend of qual and quant in unmoderated interviews. They've been continuously improving the quality of visuals, so it can sometimes be a simple drag and drop into a report!
  • The technical and account support teams are second to none. Response times and even resolution of issues is usually same day.
  • They've come in to do product onboarding and trainings for our teams which allows our research team to keep driving research while expanding what our "people who sometimes do research" are able to take on.
  • Need additional data visualizations for card sorts.
  • Customize scales (5 pt vs 7 pt) for built in likert scale questions and customized responses for success question.
It's a fantastic platform for remote qualitative interviews, both moderated and unmoderated. It allows you some organizational capabilities with data, but is not sufficient as a repository.

Great tool! UserTesting allowed me to conduct research studies easily and quickly. After launching a study I can get responses back within 2 hours. The quality of participants is great. The tool allowed me to get valuable feedback from participants and saved me so much time with the unmoderated studies. It is easy to save and share clips, it allowed me to share great clips with my stakeholders when presenting the final report
  • Easy to setup a study
  • Getting quick responses
  • Great education resources
  • Integrated Click Test
  • combine 2 5-seconds test
  • better visuals for the Tree Test
It is good tool to talk to customers of a competitor products and understand the strength and weaknesses
Conduct exploratory research to learn what potential users will need or how to improve a current product
Conduct usability studies and short studied to test certain design ideas and prototypes before commiting to the idea

We would like to have users answer questions, UK specific or, depending on the project, internationally. Sometimes we may have prototypes to test or designs to validate. UserTesting gives a good range of people to choose from and sometimes with niche criteria.
  • Detailed screener
  • Audio only option
  • Easy interface to find the responses to a project
  • I've noticed quite a few folks know how to get past the screener. I'd like more of these people not to be able to do that.
  • The instructions can be a bit clearer. Maybe linking the UT resources to the feature.
UserTesting is great for:
Conducting surveys
Video responses
National users
International users

User Testing is not so great for:

We generally use UserTesting for design research, so testing designs at various stages of the product development process. We get feedback mainly on usability, but also on expectations and understandability/comprehension of elements on the design, like copy, imagery, and general components. We have dabbled in concept testing, as well as some messaging (more so comprehension than validation). The Product team owns the license, but the Product Marketing team and Content Design teams have also benefitted from using it.
  • Recruitment
  • Usability Testing
  • Quick Tests
  • Getting quick feedback
  • Pricing structure
  • Oversight for more junior team members
  • Seat-based structure
Its strength is in usability testing and testing designs with users. Another key strength of UserTesting is its panel. Combined, it's incredible for getting quick feedback on usability. With that said, many of the panel members are used to taking tests and generally more technologically savvy. I've heard many words like intuitive more in testing now. However, I do think if you're focused on watching how people are using designs and are structuring tasks appropriately, you can still learn a lot from people who are familiar with design testing.

With that said, I do not believe UserTesting and any qualitative research should be used solely for validation. It is important to think about sample size and confidence quality. It's not really appropriate for message testing. It also can't present multiple concepts in a randomized order, so I might defer to using a different tool if you're in that stage of design.

I am a UX Designer at a local transportation company where we offer both local bus service and city-to-city coach throughout the UK. Customers can purchase tickets easily through our app and website therefore it is vital that we ensure our platforms are user-friendly. I have been with UserTesting for over a year and I usually use it to conduct unmoderated tasks where the participants will complete tasks on the functional prototype and give their genuine feedback.
  • Quick feedback.
  • Participants recruitment.
  • Customer support.
  • Recruiting the right participants (often some do not speak throughout the test).
  • Some templates are not customizable.
For people who have zero experience when it comes to designing a usability test, the UserTesting platform will be a good start as it is beginner friendly. UserTesting platform is quick to learn how the platform works as the interface is minimal, it also provides courses where they give walk new users through the features. However, when it comes to asking the right questions to get a genuine reaction from the participants, new users should learn how to avoid steering participants in a certain direction, causing them to give biased answers.

I have used UserTesting as both a user and a company working with users. From the user side, it is an easy process to find relevant tests to take that match my skill set. As a company I have used UserTesting to review landing pages on my website to get feedback from potential customers on design, readability, and easy of use. The problem I wanted to fix was on page time for users and clicked through to sign up for a demo upon getting the feedback I discovered that I needed to change my header section to be more clear and more concise.
  • Matches you with potential users that are relevant to your customer base
  • Allows you set up a very detailed process to get amazing feedback on your site
  • Provides video reviews from users so you can easily walk through their process
  • Improving the live walkthrough feature if users can review in real-time via live streaming
UserTesting is perfect for landing page reviews, product comparisons, copy editing and focus group work. I set up a multi-varied landing page sequence and had users walk through the different versions of the pages to see which one was the easiest to understand. Hearing feedback on the title copy which was clear to me but not clear to the user helped me realize how I could clarify and simplify my page copy to make sure users can navigate the site knowing what to expect upon signing up.

I do all the web design for my company myself, so I often second guess if the site is laid out well. Just because I think that it is clear doesn't always mean that it is, so user testing is important for me to get feedback.

Here is my big problem with the software - it is prohibitively expensive for small businesses. They used to offer a one-off free test that would give me a rough idea of where to start, and then it was a more affordable pricing structure if you only wanted one or two tests. Now the only option is an expensive monthly payment, in the hundreds of dollars. To be fair, virtually all other companies are the same - but it is not affordable at all for smaller businesses.
  • Great ability to target audience.
  • Great flexibility of questions to ask.
  • PRICE!
  • Options for smaller business.
Honestly, the functionality of this software is one of the best on the market. It does an incredible job of really dialing in on what you want to know and getting access to testers.

It is being used for user research and usability testing. Solves the problem of screening people to talking to and reaching out to participants from all across the country. The XD team are the ones primarily using UserTesting for the design and research work around user experience design.
  • Screening criteria.
  • Test writing format is very easy.
  • Analysis is super easy.
  • Can be slightly more affordable for smaller companies to afford it.
  • Should have budget friendly options for smaller teams who don’t have funding.
  • More logins for larger teams for more people to run tests even though testing volume could potentially be low.
Best suited to get quick results where protons are up and ready to go for testing. Not that great for native mobile app test prototypes to emulate the swipe and side scroll action. Dev teams and security teams are apprehensive of using the SDK, so a workaround for that would be appreciated.

UserTesting is both used for validating concept design ideas within a restricted qualitative user test panel or in a more extensive situation regarding launching specific POC or Concept software solutions where we need to investigate the validity and affordance of the vertical experience path of features included in the vision.
  • Usability testing with video content from users
  • customer journey mapping
  • information architecture and content mapping
  • mockup / prototype and poc validation
  • concept test
  • Diary studies
  • interactive exercises during concept test
  • quantitative study
If you have a product concept for digital software (web/mobile/desktop) user testing is the best Platform for an initial user evaluation and to identify core features and relevant experience aspects to the users. For detail design and product definition and also A/B testing of multiple visual solutions for specific UX patterns are also one of the best tools in terms of simplicity and speed to structure continuous usability testing during design and development or agile product design & dev. It is also a great tool in validation software and portal content architecture and IA and in validating content strategy and user understanding.

We use UserTesting to conduct research studies of medium to high-fidelity prototypes and to talk to users within our industry to understand their needs, motivations, and expectations when using products like ours. UserTesting users are rarely tardy, even more rarely are no shows, and often know exactly what we are looking for - open and honest feedback and a full understanding of what they are seeing. It's a relief to use UserTesting and I am so happy I'm back at a company that uses it.
  • Participant recruitment
  • Check-ins from account managers
  • Easy to use product
  • Easier to talk to customer service
  • Automatic participant replacement when a session is a no show or canceled
Well suited when you need to run quick studies (30-60 min) on a product and get a deep understanding of how users interact with it. Not suitable if you are working with live software that needs upwards of 1 hour to test, as it only allows for 60-minute sessions right now.

ADT users UserTesting for qualitative research that informs big picture strategy decisions about our ecommerce experience. Ecommerce is a competitive marketplace, and it's a great advantage to have easy access to understanding the preferences, behaviors and expectations of authentic users in real time. These insights allow us to target the most intuitive, user-friendly online purchase experience for prospects. This can occur on both micro and macro levels, as we elicit targeted feedback on high fidelity prototypes or discovery research to inform entirely new concepts and purchase experiences.
  • Highlight reels - the ability to edit and string important interview clips together for sharing reports and presentations
  • Recruiting - the confidence that a research task will be completed in the shortest time possible
  • Templates - great scripts to start from when designing research tasks
  • Markup and analysis of interview transcriptions
  • Reliance on Microsoft Excel to provide analysis features not enabled in UserTesting
  • Smarter and wider search across all projects, sessions, and transcriptions
  • Customization of transcription view to show where notes or clips have already been created
  • Better quality transcription
UserTesting is a good fit for discovery-stage and qualitative research when you want to understand user motivations and present analysis using evidence from in-person research sessions. It's also good for getting quick feedback on an as-needed basis for smaller decisions. UserTesting is not suited for quantitative applications, where sites like Qualtrics are a better fit.

We use UserTesting for, I would estimate, 90% of the user experience research we do globally. Without UserTesting, I think we would struggle to gather and act on any insights at all. I recommend UserTesting because of the speed at which I can deliver insights to my teams. Not everyone in an organization understands how user research can help them and with UserTesting, I can 'sell' research to them by delivering feedback on a product from customers, usually on the same day. For my internal customers who know little to nothing about research and whose only experience with feedback might be from polls or a customer service desk, this is revolutionary. It makes me look good, builds trust and credibility, and it allows me to continue to work with that client on more complex problems down the road.
  • Delivers participants, often in the same day
  • Delivers participants who meet my criteria
  • Delivers audio and video of a session (can't live without that)
  • Is flexible enough in allowing me to setup a test in many different ways
  • Let me go back farther than past 10 tests when I exclude participants; just let me choose which tests I want to exclude from or make it specific to my folder(s), not the whole org
  • Would like to see more quant type metrics
  • Make it easier to manage my templates; don't want them mixed up with the whole org's
In my experience, UserTesting is most successful when you have a working prototype ... although that speaks more to the participants, maybe, than it does to the platform. It just makes it easier on the participants when you can have over a few screens that work with links and users can navigate so that they don't have to image or guess. However, with that said, I almost never have a working prototype and often need to use static screens and I have to ask users to guess where a link will take them and that's also very successful. Sometimes, I even use UserTesting to ask customers questions without showing anything at all. I do that rarely but when I need a quick answer, I know UserTesting can deliver.

I have used nearly all of UserTesting's research capabilities at some time or another to test concepts, designs, prototypes, live sites, navigations, and more. For any question, there's a tool with UserTesting that can help answer it. We get feedback from real users near-instantly and it has a direct impact on how we run our business, build our sites, and sell our products.
  • Usability testing
  • Information architecture testing
  • Unmoderated studies
  • User feedback
  • Quantitative user feedback
  • Qualitative user feedback
  • Developing full integrations for IA tools
  • Simplifying the template-making/maintaining process
  • Teaching UT users how to best design tests to address root questions and problems
I run unmoderated usability studies a few times a month for products or projects at all points of development. I like gathering insight into concepts, even just by presenting written ideas to participants and getting feedback on advertising drafts or early-stage campaigns. The videos UserTesting captures for usability studies are easy to manage. I love the built-in transcripts, which are more accurate than nearly any other captioning tool I've ever used, and the way videos are broken down by task for easy analysis. I regularly make use of the creation and editing of Highlight Reels, so I can show my stakeholders behavioral trends and pain points in an emotional and hard-hitting way.

I use UserTesting in my organization to determine customer feedback on checkout services. One of the main business problems that are addressed is customers' thoughts and feelings behind certain aspects of the checkout service. Do they like how it looks? what does it mean to them? is it easy to use? etc.
  • There are guides available for support
  • Good for qualitative research
  • The 'think out loud' test results are useful for providing information on how the customer is feeling which helps us to understand the customer's journey
  • Enables empathy of the customers
  • Easier way to use templates
  • Transcripts can sometimes be difficult to interpret due to accents
  • some quantative research options as well as qualitative
When running a test on the first impression of a product then user testing has been beneficial, if a product is not right from the first stage then there is more that is going to need to be changed. Having customer feedback at the start can also help to move the product forward and shape the next stage.

My UX team, and our director of consumer insights has been using UserTesting for about about two years now, internally. The information we gleam has been invaluable, especially in 2020 when in-person focus groups are difficult to host. We have been able to catch and correct design issues before launch, pivot on design decisions, listen to users' "thoughts" as they complete surveys, listen and watch them complete card sorts for our IA. The options and uses are endless.
  • Flexibility- you can do so much with the tool - it's really is up to you.
  • Support - between the commUnity, UserTesting University, and their support team, I feel very supported in my testing and never feel "lost."
  • Collaboration - it's easy to help my colleagues build out their tests.
  • Because its so vast - it can be easy to get lost, and overwhelmed.
  • It can be time consuming to go through all the recordings individually.
  • The way the tests are organized can be confusing - could work on better organization or filtering to find tests.
I've used UserTesting to test for and against situations. I've used it to prove why we should kill off a feature, and to support how our IA should be organized. I've used it for discovery, and seeing how users prefer to shop. When testing prototypes, I would love to see a better, or more easier, solution for InVision, and prototyping.

UserTesting was our primary vehicle for testing our designs – whether it was A/B testing concepts, usability studies for in-market products, or testing our hypotheses. The platform helped us increase speed to outcomes, which historically had been a laborious process that often took weeks. We would literally construct and run a test and within a day we'd have robust data on user sentiment we could analyze. In-app tools including charts and summaries helped us unpack usability issues or wayfinding challenges observed in our UIs. As the Sr. UX Manager under product, UserTesting became an indispensable tool my entire team relied on to uncover possibilities.
  • Speed at which testing can be run
  • Large pool of potential consumers to test against
  • Platform ease of use
  • Incredible help and responsive support staff
  • Resources to deepen understanding including certification
  • Misinterpretation of the data by inexperienced teams
  • Better mobile support
The application is well suited for scenarios in which qualitative feedback is needed quickly. It allows teams to target specific demographic populations that further increase the likelihood of getting relevant feedback. In creating a cohort of panelists, there are robust features that enable companies to narrow audience segments by age range, industry, salary range, regions of the country, etc.. UserTesting even allows for the ability to build your own customized groups. One of the challenges and a potential area of growth could be making it easier to find niche audiences. For example, we needed to test C-suite executives within financial institutions. We ended up relying more on our relationships with these folks when it came to getting the data we needed.

I initiated the usability testing framework for our Product Team to connect with users and ensure we’re solving the right problems. I lead the effort to overhaul our design process and design system. I have deep empathy for the needs of our users through testing and observing their experiences across all of our products.
  • Ask any question: UserTesting allows me to create a test plan to ask any question or request people to perform tasks. Explore, validate, compare, repeat.
  • Target anyone: UserTesting allows me to target the UserTesting Contributor Network or connect with my own audiences.
  • Discover & analyze: UserTesting allows me to get to insights more quickly with visualizations, transcripts, metrics, and analysis.
  • Engage & empathize: UserTesting allows me to engage with my audience through self-guided video recordings or live conversations.
  • Share insights: UserTesting allows me to create highlight reels, download, export, or share in your favorite tools like Slack, JIRA, and Trello.
  • I can't think of any at this time.

In my organization, we use UserTesting to achieve many of our user testing needs. In many cases, we use lookalike audiences to mimic our user base since we don't have full access to our own users, which helps us get better-targeted tests and results. We use UserTesting for simple usability testing to complex research and recruiting.
  • Unmoderated usability testing
  • Lookalike audiences
  • Broad user base
  • Diverse audience
  • Moderated user testing
  • Templates
I would highly recommend it for unmoderated usability testing. If you need to test your product with a broad audience, UserTesting will be able to recruit users in less than a day, and you will have your results in quickly. Moreover, the breakdown tools UserTesing provides really help with analyzing the data and breaking it into digestible chunks.

I use UserTesting every day in my role as a UX researcher. It's our main source for participants for online usability and user testing. I always have a handful of unmoderated and moderated studies up and running on the platform.
  • Sourcing a diverse group of participants quickly
  • All in one spot to recruit, host sessions, and analyze sessions
  • Create and share clips of users really easily with stakeholders
  • The organization of the work spaces/dashboards could use some work.
  • I don't feel as supported as I used to from a customer success perspective. I used to have dedicated, go-to professionals to reach out to about my account who knew my project context, account history, etc. Recently we've been pushed into general support pools, and it doesn't feel like my account gets any personalized attention anymore.
  • I would like to see a more refined experience for collaborators - the test plans I share with them are plain text/hard to read.
  • Would be nice to be able to conduct focus groups using this tool.
It is the bread and butter of my UX research practice! It is consistently a high-quality source of participants, I'm able to draft up and launch tests super quickly, and results come in very fast. The video player has a lot of great functionality, and I absolutely love making clips and sharing them via hyperlinks with people in my org to help grow empathy for our customers. I have had the most success with the tool for screen-recorded web or app tasks, as well as mobile ethnography where users show me around their space (at home). This tool is not as well suited for longitudinal/out in the wild ethnography (needing users to complete multiple tasks over the course of a time period) or be out somewhere in the world, like at a mall. I personally don't use it much for standard IDIs, but it could easily be used as your go-to for one-on-one interviews without task-based or screen recording components.

We are a small team with a lot of research requests coming in and this platform has allowed us to greatly increase the number of projects that we can take on.
  • A large pool of users that are quickly accessible
  • Customer help is available quickly and is very helpful
  • Platform is very easy to use
  • Help documents are great with loads of online training and tutorials
  • Not much in the way of randomization. The flow within the study is not that customizable.
Great for any team that does usability testing or interviews. The platform allows you to conduct these types of tests quickly and efficiently allowing your team to get more done in a shorter amount of time. The quality of the users is also great. The few times that I got less than desirable responses, those instances were handled well.

We needed a quick solution to capture customer feedback as we redesigned our website before the pandemic hit—and we were so grateful to have UserTesting moving forward. Not only were we able to gather input affordably in a few hours—helping us stay relevant each step of the way—but we also noticed that using the tool inspired a shift in mindset across teams. Stakeholders now inquired about the experience rather than simply rolling out a solution. UserTesting provides a tool to create and share highlight reels with our teams, and often watch these highlight reels together to learn more about the "why" behind the behavior. UserTesting offers a supportive CommUnity of users to ask questions or to participate in training opportunities.
  • Easily create user tests through templates
  • Responses are quick! We usually receive a full panel of responses in a few hours.
  • Highlight reels make it super easy to share with stakeholders.
  • Highlight reels are gated for stakeholders, but downloads are allowed
  • Transcripts are not available on basic tier
  • Max 5 participants per test
UserTesting is essential for testing the user experience of wireframes, landing pages, web journeys, marketing messaging, and more. We've found that it is an integral part of our launch process for products. While UserTesting provides the "why" behind the demonstrated behavior of users, it should also be coupled with quantitative analysis, such as Qualtrics, for a broader scope.
