It's great if you want to test something quickly with a third-party script on your page. Quick visual fixes are also great when deployments are not possible. However, it's not great when you want to measure site performance.

I think it’s a wonderful software with a lot of potential for A/B testing. It provides a lot of value and allows businesses to make smart decisions. However it can also be used as a crutch at times by marketing folks to deploy changes without proper process. It is also very dangerous in the hands of someone who isn’t technically aware of what they are doing. It can also be very dangerous if someone malicious gets access and is able to inject bad JS, no checks to see if the code is malicious or suspicious, GTM does that.

Optimizely a perfect tool

Optimizely Web Experimentation is a perfect tool for :
A/B testing: Optimizely is a popular tool for A/B testing, which involves testing two versions of a webpage or app against each other to see which version performs better. Optimizely can help you set up and run A/B tests quickly and easily, making it a good choice for businesses looking to optimize their conversion rates.
User experience testing: Optimizely can be used to test different variations of a webpage or app to see which version provides the best user experience. For example, you might test different color schemes, fonts, or layout options to see which one is most appealing to users.
Conversion rate optimization: Optimizely can help businesses optimize their conversion rates by testing different versions of landing pages, forms, and other key conversion elements. By using data and analytics to identify areas where users are dropping off or losing interest, businesses can make targeted changes that improve their overall conversion rate.
Personalization: Optimizely can be used to create personalized experiences for users based on their behavior, preferences, and other data. For example, you might use Optimizely to create personalized product recommendations or to display different content based on a user's location or browsing history.
Mobile app testing: Optimizely can also be used to test and optimize mobile apps. This might involve testing different app layouts, features, or user flows to see which version provides the best user experience and highest engagement.

I found running an test and personalizations really fit within the wheel house of the product. I think there are areas to improve especially with session replays and sessions heat maps. Overall the product has grown since the beginning and continues to take customer feedback and grow the product to fit more needs.

Optimizely is well-suited for testing simple changes across your site and tracking user's take rate on specific elements. Additionally, I would recommend using Optimizely if you are interested in experimenting with new elements on your page that require building a not-too-complex product. I would not use Web Experimentation if you are interested in testing an element that requires the integration of an outside platform, API, etc.

Optimizely is great for running experiments and for having a relatively self-serve approach to setting up new experiments, but it doesn't cover all feature-flag related use cases that our team has so it might not be best suited for that for some teams at least

This would be a great tool for a small team that has some technical skillsets that is interested in being able to do a lot of testing. However, I would not recommend this to a team without any technical support. Good thing is Optimizely Web Experimentation does offer paid services for teams without the skillsets needed to set things up.

Actually, all businesses need a nice internet presence, mainly with websites. From developing these websites and functions to optimizing the page performance Optimizely will do really nice work and make the challenge so easy. If the business has no web designer or developer I think simple software will do the job.

To quickly add A/B Testing to your mobile applications, I can highly recommend the product. It's not free, but you often get what you pay for if you go with a free or open-source solution. If your company has the budget, this tool/SDK is worth the investment and time saved.

It's great if you want to do quick and easy testing by inserting a third-party script onto your page. It is also great to make quick visual fixes when a deployment isn't possible.

It's not great (at least it isn't great if you aren't using self-hosting/Optimizely Edge) if you want to have optimal website performance.

Optimizely is great for A/B and multivariate testing - it's a very user-friendly experimentation platform that allows us to accomplish our testing goals without using IT resources. We've even used it to roll changes out at 100% (in the short term) until IT priorities allow for the changes to be made to a landing page.

Good for hosting experiments, not good when there are element changes on the page for longer running experiments where the page undergoes updates and rollouts causing elements to change. Hard to flag these bugs when they arise in real-time. Can have issues with loading Optimizely in the header that causes a flicker of the treatment experiment or rebucketing issues when a user returns to the page.

Optimizely is very effective for A/B and multivariate testing. We have seen random instances where browser extension ad-blockers block Optimizely rendering experiments not effective. Therefore, if used for an important content fix, it might not be the best solution, although it's better than nothing when you can't get a fix through engineering fast enough.

It seems like it has most of the functionality you'd want in an A/B testing tool. However, it also seems like there are some implementation expectations built into the functionality. I suspect that some of the difficulties we've had getting up to speed have been due to our usage not adhering to the intended usage pattern. I'm not sure if we diverted intentionally by choice, by necessity, or because of insufficient guidance.

Well suited for teams that don't have dev capacity for developers to build their tests. Well suited for teams that are looking to test quickly and frequently. Generally good for any team to make quick, auto deployed, changes to a site. Not great for enhancing data analysis, you can pull out the data and then need to analyze it somewhere else, but high-level metrics are in it.

For a client that has a large experimentation and UX team, with robust and clear processes this can work. As well as a strong technical team for implementation.

For more lean organizations or ones that are just starting and building out their experimentation teams, other tools like Google Optimize may be more fitting or appropriate.

Optimizely Web

Score 7 out of 10
Vetted Review

Optimizely Web is well suited for individuals or organizations that are interested in improving conversion. A prime example is on a marketing page, where the ultimate goal is to get the user to sign up. Optimizely allows even individuals with less technical knowledge of the product to implement and test changes that can have a large impact on conversion. Optimizely Web is less appropriate for improving retention as long running experiments can be tricky to run. Optimizely Full Stack aims to address this issue and provides a much richer experience for engineers and developers.
