I find Meltwater to be as user-friendly/easy to use as Cision, but the difference is in the number of metrics that Cision is able to capture and quantify (ie audience, UVPM, publicity value, etc). To be fair, I've also only started using Meltwater, but I prefer Cision because of the great reports it's able to generate and the metrics mentioned above.

I am relatively young in terms of experience, and Cision Communications Cloud is the only product of its kind that I've used so far. At my past companies, media list management was all handled by an outside agency so I did not have visibility into their systems.

It's a similar product. I think Meltwater sells itself as being a bit more niche, but I have not found many significant differences between Meltwater and Cision. Meltwater's sales process is a very high pressure and their prices are inflated.

Cision's customer support was much better from what we read in reviews and it was one of the reasons it was selected. Critical Mention seemed to have a better and more streamlined user interface. The amount of features in Cision seemed better for our needs compared to some of the other products we looked at.

The two programs were nearly identical—Cision was able to give us a better price. Moreover, the Cision database is much more robust, is more frequently updated, and has more impactful information thanks to the reporter notebooks tools. Additionally, Cision's customer service is leaps and bounds ahead of Meltwater.

There was one other product we looked at, but I don't recall what it was. Cision was so far ahead in terms of what it had to offer, that the decision at the time was a no-brainer for us. We've been happy with the product and we continue to learn and optimize our use as we fine-tune public relations efforts at our organization, which have gone from write a press release to - story placements, events, government relations and more.

While Zoho Social is significantly cheaper than Cision Communication Cloud, the limitations on both the overall length of time available to gather reports on, as well as the lacking of any and all earned media, makes the product fall victim to the old adage of "you get what you pay for."

I used Meltwater for a number of years and I felt like the database wasn't as good as Cision. Also, the salespeople at Meltwater were overly aggressive and unpleasant to work with. I've also used Muck Rack in the past, and while the media database is about as good, I didn't think it was as easy or as user-friendly as Cision.

  • Help a Reporter Out (HARO)
HARO has been a huge help in achieving important media placements and developing new relationships with reporters, producers, bloggers, freelancers and variety of other media. When your job is media relations, as mine is, it's all about making those connections and ever expanding one's reach, to promote the client's key players, Centers of Excellence, mission, etc.

In truth, Meltwater's sales teams have always put me off. I used them for a short time and they weren't right for my organization then. I'm with a different company and I'm less sure now.

Cision is always the best for creating your "reporter Rolodex" in the modern age and Trendkite doesn't compete with that, but the reporting features are beyond what Cision can do. Meltwater's search feature is much more complex and the learning curve to learn the platform is much more complicated than Trendkite. The overall media monitoring is also superior and MUCH better for broadcast hits.

For us, with a lot of staff who need to use the product without a lot of time to dig into very technical trainings on best practices for using the tool, Cision provided a great solution that was also received well by executives in our organization who love the reporting features.

Other measurement platforms like Cision (before the TrendKite acquisition) and Meltwater are excessively expensive and, in my opinion, much less effective than Cision Communications Cloud (now with TrendKite).
