What is Airship?

Mobile app customers are 3x more valuable than non-app customers on average. Airship, the mobile app experience company, enables brands to capture that value.

Airship App Experience Platform

The Airship platform provides an end-to-end solution for capturing value across the entire customer app lifecycle — from acquisition and activation to engagement and loyalty. It starts with Airship's app store optimization (ASO) solutions promoting app discovery and downloads. Then Airship's unified cross-channel journey orchestration, intelligent content creation, and experimentation solutions allow app teams to bridge inside-the-app experiences with outside-the-app messaging to capture customer value everywhere. Marketers and product managers get work done in minutes instead of months with Airship's no-code native app experience editor — bypassing developer support and app updates.

Airship Customers

From world-leading brands to up-and-coming innovators, Airship customers like Chipotle, The Home Depot, Air France, NBCUniversal, Allstate, and Vodafone understand two important things: the huge value potential of mobile apps and what it takes to capture that value.

At NBC Local we use Airship's API to power our internal push dashboard in WordPress. This is used by digital producers to send news pushes. We pull Airship push analytics into DOMO, our internal data dashboard.
As an Audience Retention Manager, I use Airship to send re-engagement pushes, using Airship's predictive churn functionality. I also check cohorts in PA for retention data.
  • Customer support
  • Analytics
  • Reengagement options
  • Make it easier to manager an account with multiple apps
  • Data in PA tool often loads very slowly
  • Streamline journey steps
It's great for news pushes and reengagement pushes. AXP features are not available in our contract tier so I can't review those.
  • We don't use the cross-channel capabilities
We only use it for pushes and reengagement pushes.
We were able to A/B test reengagement pushes before setting up campaigns. It showed us that rich media pushes were more effective.
We use Sailthru for emails. We have not used them for pushes so I can't compare the two.

We at Vodafone use Airship in our Product to send Push notifications to customers to engage with our App. We use customer segmentation, and different criteria to send condition based notifications for customer engagement.
Although trivial currently, this is a very important use-case to let us know about how the customer use our product.
  • The marketing push notifications are very effective, and it gives us free hand to define different business criteria to target user groups
  • The user experience or the message content could differ from Android and iOS, and this is a huge benefit for us
  • As an Architect, troubleshooting an issue is very detailed and the time it takes to troubleshoot an issue is considerably less from our previous product
  • The messaging journey, rather than going via various screens - would be good to have them in a single page
  • Would be good to know if the Product supports WatchOS And Android watch notifications
For Vodafone, the major advantage is to use customized push notifications for different user groups, and this enables us to use segment and use target based notifications for a given sample of users.
We believe we have not fully explored or used the potential of Airship for other use cases yet
  • The ROI has increased more than approx. 50% (exact details to be confirmed) based on cross-channel orchestration
  • Using push notifications alone, we have seen a huge increase in app engagement which was a challenge before to nudge users to get back to the App after initial download
We do not make use of in-app messaging and email, only push notifications are used currently and this has increased the app engagement allowing users to repeatedly come back to the App

The above mentioned products were evaluated for initial RFQ process however Airship was awarded for the robustness and ease of use, and its strategy aligns with Vodafone's App usage engagement

Targeting customers for our marketing communications is essential and becoming more important when you have quite a big amount of things to share with them. you can not just do a mass blast of all your communications to each and every one of your users. selecting the right customers to receive the suitable communications such as promotions, new partnerships, fresh information need to be communicated with customers who are likely to be interested in receiving them, and in the end act upon those messages. Airship helps me a lot in selecting who to send the messages to, when to send it, and even how to better communicate with variety groups of customers. because no matter how we wanted them to be uniform, they are each a different human being with their own perceptions and way of thinking. using Airship as a tool to help us communicate our messages to our customers has been quite easy and enables us to have a better focus on how to adapt and improve the way we communicate things.
  • Segmenting customers based on their response and activities
  • Having a connector to our other existing platforms
  • Easy-to-use user interface to compile messages
  • Ability to trigger messages via custom events and real time performance measuring
  • The automated A/B testing winner selection and application should be added
  • The flexibility of message shape, specifically incorporating transparency so messages do not need to be a rectangular shape
  • Faster and more reliable servers around the globe
  • Making more detailed use cases and tutorials to be followed can simplify things for users
If you do have many things to communicate to your customers and needs an extra personalization in it. airship is the way to go. if you simply want to send your message in general and blast them to all your customers regardless, there are many other alternatives to go for. But if you do care about how you communicate with your customers and how they will take action upon your messages you would probably need to start thinking ahead about prevent mass sending the same message to everyone.
  • Ability to send multiple personalized messages to different segments automatically has been extremely helpful in composing the dynamic content that needs to be delivered fast
  • Ease of use of the message composer does not require high skilled personnel to use it
  • Many automations enabled by airship has reduced the development time compared to not using the tool
  • Journeys is a nice feature although I would recommend doing a thorough test before applying them.
  • The reports and analytics in near real time are very helpful to make improvements in the way we communicate to our customers
We can easily communicate our messages and directly measure the effectiveness on whether it requires a tweak or are they impactful enough to make our customers engage and in the end become our loyal customers. And the ability to create detailed reports and analytics on the platform is quite superb, despite the efforts to utilize them efficiently and on point since there are so many possibilities to analyze.
We can do selected A/B tests quite fast and see the result almost instantly and act upon it to improve our messaging strategy. The ability to tag and identify customer engagement is also a very helpful feature and can be turned into reports which we can then further analyze.
Airship is superb in customer support against all others. Even though I feel CleverTap may be a better choice but probably will not be as easy as Airship when setting them up and operating it. As for MoEngage, the last experience I had was simply not good enough, but that was more than two years ago in my region.

We have integrated many different Push platforms into our client's mobile apps, and Airship is the most tried and true in my eyes. It effectively allows our clients to send automated and segmented Push notifications to their users in a an accurate and timely manner, and the development required for to integrate Airship is straightforward. We have even worked directly with the Airship team to implement a custom solution for one of our client's needs.
  • Automated Push Notifications
  • Ability to effectively create tags for segmentation purposes
  • Reporting of user interaction with sent push messages
  • Better clarity on what can and can't be tracked in terms of user interactions with apps
Airship is a great tool for Push Message and In-App Message marketing efforts, and their message center is fully flushed out (unlike many other platforms I have worked with). They have also gotten better over the last year or two in aligning things a bit more efficiently across iOS and Android. I have not personally used Airship for anything other than their Mobile App offerings, so I can't comment on their SMS or Web Notification capabilities, but I have heard negative things about their email offering. To me Airship is first and foremost a mobile app tool, and everything else is secondary, so that makes sense.
  • Retargeting app users
  • Increased app engagement
  • Timely marketing capabilities
I have also worked with Vibes, Salesforce, Pendo, and Swrve for mobile app marketing efforts, and I always come back to airship as delivering the best Push and In-App messaging capabilities. If you want a full service platform for Push and In-App messaging rather than configuring these channels through something that is no cost such as Firebase, then i would recommend Airship.
The interface takes a bit getting used to in order to know how to take advantage of everything. Some of the analytics that are available are particularly hard to find, so it's important to pay attention when customer support reviews everything, but everything I'd want and need in terms of Push and In-App messaging is all there.
I have not had to interact much with customer support as I have been able to find the vast majority of the answers I'm looking for within their documentation, which I very much appreciate because it saves me a lot of time. Customer support has been responsive and helpful for the most part during the couple of interactions I've had.

We use Urban Airship for push notifications on breaking news stories. It's used by a few members of our editorial staff. When news breaks and we get a story on our site, we send out the push notifications to bring readers back to our content. It helps drive traffic and engagement.
  • It's very fast. As soon as we hit send, it arrives on our phone and tablet apps immediately.
  • The interface is clear. We generally copy and paste the headline right into the box. The font and font size, along with the background, make it easy to read so that we avoid any typos. That's important because we're working quickly.
  • It gives you good and usable analytics to track engagement.
  • It's 100 percent reliable. We've never had an issue with it.
  • The interface can be a little confusing. In the upper right corner of your dashboard, you'll see "New Push Message" and "New Message" ... Seems odd to have two choices. Then, after you push "New Message" you can copy and paste your text, but then there are about three more buttons before you get to the point of sending it. That just might be how it's integrated with our app so other markets might be different. But, if you have the instructions, it's fairly quick.
  • Again, this could be just the way it's integrated with our app, but when a user clicks on the alert on their phones, it goes to the web site and not to the specific story. So, we have to make sure the story is in a prominent place on our site (Latest News, mainstage).
  • It would be nice to have small photos in our push notifications.
It's well-suited when you want your content to get out quickly. It's best for breaking or big news. We do weigh what types of stories we want to push. We don't want to overuse it, but we want to take advantage. We don't find it appropriate using it between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. We sent out a push one time around midnight, and we got a comment back that it woke somebody up and scared them.
  • It's had a positive impact on engagement.
  • It helps lend credibility to our product given that major sites like CNN, AP, ESPN, etc. have push notifications.
  • I have not come across any negative impacts.
  • Spreed
There was a time when we went off Urban Airship and went to Spreed. We were using Spreed's app, so there was much better integration on push notifications. The push notification took readers directly into the story. When we moved from Spreed to our own native app, we went back to Urban Airship.
