DAM Features
Features commonly found in dedicated Digital Asset Management (DAM) Software.

Ingestion of digital assets into a DAM platform can typically be made individually or in bulk and can occur through a native browser interface. Drag-and-drop features can streamline file ingestion.
- 8.2Downloading assets(24) Ratings
Downloads allow for role-based file conversions into multiple formats. Download settings can be configured to ensure compliance with licenses and copyrights. Assets may also be embedded into design files (like Adobe) for auto-updating other assets when versioning occurs.
- 7.2Categories(23) Ratings
Assets can be organized in drop-down menus to assist in discovery and grouped with related assets for greater utilization. Most DAMs offer AI and machine vision tagging tools to automatically recognize key data in visual elements which automatically sets tags and metadata fields.
- 8.2Asset storage(23) Ratings
Centralized storage capacity and accessibility for centralized storage of marketing and brand assets. These can be anything from documents, audio files, videos, images, creative files (Adobe, etc.), etc. Outdated assets can be archived.
- 7.9Asset sharing(24) Ratings
The ability to share and distribute assets with internal or external partners using sharing links attached to emails and messages, as well as portals. Data and assets can also be syndicated to third parties. Some DAMs enable asset publishing directly to end-user sites for more efficient distribution.
- 7.4Asset search(24) Ratings

- 6.4Content editing(16) Ratings
Templates and text editors facilitate the creation and publication of branded copy as well as asset cropping and modification. Version tracking should also be available for assets with duplicate names, along with their usage history. Some DAMs offer integration with editing tools so that high-fidelity edits can be made outside the DAM and automatically synced back as a new or updated version.
- 7Embed codes(10) Ratings
Blocks of HTML code that facilitate the inclusion of videos from third-party sources on websites.
- 6.7Metadata(20) Ratings

- 5.6Workflow automations(9) Ratings
Collaborative workflow with role-based permissions as well as tracking and monitoring of asset usage, requests, and assignments.
- 6.6Related asset discovery(13) Ratings

(51-75 of 253)Simple Solution
- Detailed metadata that is easily searchable
- Ability to share images with non-licensed users
- Tag images as confidential or sensitive
- Collect images from field personnel
- Integration with Adobe products could allow for drag and drop functionality
- Easier/Faster migration of large datasets
- Managing metadata of assets.
- Sharing digital media via the cloud.
- User management
- Search function can be occasionally slow.
- Smart tags aren't always relevant
Canto is almost too good to be true!
- Canto is great at letting you add multiple tags to photos, documents, and files so that they can be found by anyone no matter how they might be searching for it.
- Canto has the upload ability to to complete transfer very large file folders and still keep the exact file structure and keep things labels and divided.
- Canto is wonderful at being able to look for random and specific items across a large platform by your simple words or phrases.
- Canto has a place where it automatically tags items as they are uploaded, and they call it smart tags. I think Canto could be tweaked a bit to pick up more common tags on it's own.
- Canto has facial recognition yet cannot search within a bunch of photo files for pictures with tile flooring in them. I think this is an area for improvement.
- Canto is able to upload large folders and keep the structure, but then is not able to keep the exact same structure when you are simply creating a new file within the program.
Canto : One of the Best DAMs Out There!
- File versioning
- File cloud storage
- Client portals
- I'd like to see albums created automatically when a folder is added.
Decent DAM, but has some room for improvement
- Tagging
- Ability to crop and resize photos when you download
- Facial recognition
- Photos aren't listed in numerical order, making it not easy to tag photos
- Wish there was a collaborative workspace for users to give feedback on content, etc, what they do currently have isn't ideal
Easy to use digital asset management
- Easily and clearly displays our digital assets
- Helps categorize items with folders
- Helps categorize items with easily searchable tags
- Control access to specific assets
- I'd like the tags to pre-populate
- I'd like to make it easy for our users to get notified when new content is posted
Canto - The Creative Lifesaver
- Sharing assets to third party groups and partners
- Storage for a decent price
- Approval processes and project management systems
- Ability for third parties to make selections or favorites from a collection
- A better looking UI/UX
- More portal templates
- You can segment photos/files by specific folder/file name which helps when you want to see all examples of a certain type.
- You can tag files with anything you want which helps with the global search bar.
- I like the approved/pending/restricted label since it filters automatically.
- Auto-tagging is impossible to use - it uses the same keywords as you used for the previous upload which is great when it's the exact same thing, but you have to manually delete whatever you don't want.
- GeoView is also not user friendly. It doesn't prompt for a location upon uploading content.
- It has an easy UX and search capabilities
- The visual library is so easy to navigate, and has a better visual experience than most competitors
- It feels simplistic once you're trained and get the hang of it
- The albums/folders are a little confusing, but their team is helpful in assisting
- The entire application does not feel like it's built for retina Mac screens. Most buttons/features appear slightly pixelated on my Mac, and it feels like they haven't adapted it to be high-resolution for Mac retina screens.
- I would love to see how they're constantly evolving and improving (not sure if they are)
Can't do without Canto!
- Image search.
- Object tagging.
- Asset repository.
- UI/UX.
- Quality of image preview.
- Load speed.
Real Connection - Selling Homes
- Searching photos
- Creating share links for clients
- Tagging and organize thousands of photos
- Easy to navigate
- Zero buffering or lag issues
- Time saving
- Easy to share with clients
- Easy of use with mobile phone regarding share links
- Enhance photo editing like Google
- Adding verbiage to photos links
- Use Google Photo Albums share links as an example to improve
Good for every aspect of organization
- Allows for multiple users with various collaboration restrictions. This allows someone that simply brings in content for our organization to do that without getting lost in other content through a sharing link, whereas someone who is involved in using the content can have full access.
- Provides a branding platform that is easy to reference and use.
- Allows our full organization to be on the same page about branding and media use, which brings about consistency and unity.
- Moving from the home screen to individual folders can be confusing and hard to navigate repeatedly.
- Integration with presentation software isn't seamless, making for extra work to provide a ready-to-use presentation.
- Automation
- Visual Database
- Quick Sharepoints
- Great Customer Service
- Innovation in Product
- Standardization of Assets
- Digital Asset Storage & Licensing Management
- Speed in browsing through databases.
- More customization for specific use cases.
- More customization with portals.
User friendly, and very quick
So in short, we're using Canto as a place to house the best of every category of work we do, so that anyone on the team can find what they need!
- Share links. Now, we can share video asset examples to our clients without them having to download it! They can click on the link, and watch it immediately in a browser, major time saver. Also, for security reasons, it's great that we can set an expiration date to those links, and toggle download permissions.
- Filter bar. I love how I can quickly filter the assets I currently have in my window. I might use the search function, but realize I missed one part of the search. No worries, I can quickly filter those results!
- Portals and Workspaces. I love how I can control what users can see in their portals, and that I can use a Workspace to organize assets before making them visible on the general Canto library. This allows me the time to organize assets on Canto, without risking them falling into other's hands before they're ready.
- I don't love the share features for My Collections. Right now, to share a collection externally, you have to go to the collection, select all the assets, and create a share link. There should be a share link creation associated with the collection itself.
- Moving and creating folders and albums is slow. Anytime I create or move one, the system will take quite a few seconds of loading time. Also, after it's done, the entire folder structure will collapse to its smallest state, and I usually want it to remain the way it was.
- Tagging. This isn't a unique issue with Canto, but I wish tagging was less manual, wish I could create shortcuts for tags. I have to make repetitive tags as I want to make sure the right results come up for a user, no matter how they search for it. For example, I'll manually tag an asset "e-comm" "ecomm" e-commerce" and "ecommerce."
However, if you're looking to create an educational portal, this may not be the right environment. Leaving notes and comments on Canto is a little hard to do, and they are not easy to find when looking at an asset.
We Love Canto
- Organization on the files
- Easy access for download and share
- Security regarding the fact you can share your documents with the people you want.
- Easy app
- The file migration; it can't be done one time.
Canto Checked All Of The Boxes
- Visually show you the file in a thumbnail without having to click on it
- Keyword search to find files relating to exactly what you're looking for
- Easy user upload and download
- Ability to share assets with outside members
- The servers get slow after a single use experience of uploading items
- The servers can't handle large uploads (for instance like 1 GB) very well
- It would be nice to not have to pay for more than 5 users
Go Canto
- Easy for all team members to access
- tagging
- easy to use
- Desk top folder like OneDrive or dropbox
- Option to have more than one library
- N/A
Choosing Canto is a great decision.
- Easy implementation
- Google Drive/External Link Synchronization
- Does all the hard work for us
- After the setup time frame, we got everything working to where it was 100%. We have enjoyed our service since implementation.
Canto delivers on its promise.
- Easy upload through separate app - Canto Connect
- Intuitive and fast access to sharing assets
- Smart tagging of assets
- Public facing portals
- Custom URL for Portals
- More freedom to custom design the portal e.g. template selection
- More integrations
Easy, Custom, and Efficient!
- Custom tagging
- Commenting
- Content categorisation
- Reduced cost for additional admin/contributor profiles would be nice. As our team grew, we needed more but the cost feels a bit high for more people to be added with this access level.
Canto Good System
- Portals for external Press or Outside Agencies
- Easily relate images which we use for UGC and approvals
- Easy to use
- Price can get expensive after a while
- Automatic tagging features are lacking compared to others.
- More Users per account
Great for agencies!
- Organization
- Search queries
- UX
- Onboarding is tough, but that's more because it's a robust tool and we're a team of over-thinkers :).
Canto is DAM good
- Great interface
- Simple to use but powerful features
- Easy to set up and manage
- Great support
- Reliable and fast despite a large amount of content uploaded
- Includes support for video
- There is currently no way of integrating InDesign plugin through our CISCO firewall
- Some plugins are expensive although very useful
Overall, would recommend
- Best search functionality out of all other DAM systems I looked into.
- Frequent product updates.
- Good customer service.
- Slow load times (especially for video).
- Only admins ("power users") can upload assets into the main library. Canto limits the number of admin seats you can have.
- Initial training was not very helpful.
- Asset management and distribution.
- Detailed permissions structures.
- Portals and style guides.
- More direct integrations with programs like Sketch and Bridge would be great! (already has some other Adobe product integrations).
- More control over the Smart Tags feature would be really useful - to be able to train it a certain way (using brand terms, for example) or teach it not to tag certain things would help us customize the automatic tags it adds—removing some of these is a manual process (even with confidence set at 95).
- Transparency for the price tiers for adding more power users and more storage space would be helpful in our planning.
